                                  Student Council News

The Student Council is very active this year despite the
pandemic, wearing masks and finding an alternate
meeting room. Each year, the members vote on a
                                       community service project.

This year, after hearing about the Grayrock Farm
Sanctuary in Clinton, NJ from Mrs. Giorello, and seeing
pictures of the animals that are being helped, the group
voted to make a donation. Their hope is to visit the
sanctuary once COVID restrictions are lifted and field trips
                                       can once again happen.

Ryan, Aidan and Kyah are ready
to present the check.

THE MONTHLY - The Midland School
Shining Star Students
Midland is initiating a new way of highlighting our students which we are calling Mid-
land’s Shining Stars as a way to connect, celebrate and recognize students and learn
more about them and their interests outside of school. Our goal is to build a community
of support and friendship.

We invite all families of Midland students to share information about their child and life
accomplishments. This month it is our pleasure to introduce you to our first two Stars.

Midland welcomed Annie in September 2020 as a new student in Mrs. Reilly’s class. She adjusted
so well to her new school environment. It did not take long for her to make new friends and get ac-
customed to her new routine. When seen in the hallways, Annie always has a smile on her face.

Her parents are so proud with how determined Annie is and how she never fails at trying new
things. She likes to have fun and laugh. She is a social butterfly and enjoys having conversations
with everyone she meets.

Lately, Annie has made big strides in recognizing sight words and learning to crawl.
Annie plays TOPPS soccer through Branchburg In town soccer. She loves to go to church and en-
joys her swim lessons.

Annie’s parents share “She is at her best when she challenges herself, connects with others and is
learning new things. She wants to be engaged in activities just like her three siblings”. Annie’s
family feels so fortunate that their community has inclusive activities for her!

Mrs. Reilly adds, “Annie is one of those children who you meet, you get to know and you love. She
has been the perfect addition to the Midland School and to our classroom. She has adjusted so well
and I have seen so much progress in Annie since September. She loves to have conversations with
her teachers and her friends and she asks appropriate questions throughout the school day. She is
engaged in her lessons and she aims to please. It has been an absolute pleasure being her teacher
this school year. Her smile truly lights up the entire room and makes our days so bright! We are so
happy she is here with us. “
THE MONTHLY - The Midland School
Laura started Midland in September 2020. It did not take long for Laura to love her new school. Laura’s mother
took the initiative to reach out to Midland to tell her story as a way to get to know Laura. As Laura’s Mom
shares, “I'm a great believer that families almost always learn most from other families, about how to support
their loved one, this is another way that we can do that.”

Laura’s mom offers there are three areas that Laura’s greatest interests are at The Midland School. Laura enjoys
working in the Horticulture, Literacy class and going to Woodshop. At home, Laura has been learning how to be
more independent and contributing more to her home and family by emptying the dishwasher, caring for pets,
folding clothes, and cooking.

However, Laura’s “true love” is cycling. The past fall Laura participated in her first cycling competition. A proud
parent moment was watching her complete both events and watch her walk on stage to receive her medals.

In addition to cycling, another one of Laura’s passions is horses. Laura loves all animals! She showers her dog Max
and cat Lacey, and her new kitten Chip with love every day. Laura enjoys volunteering at the Women’s Animal
Center in their “Read to the Cats” program that helps socialize cats and kittens for adoption. She loves meeting
and learning about new animals. So if you have an animal she will certainly engage with you to learn more about
them.

Her parents offer some advice “try different methods and encourage your child because you never know when
something is going to click – she surprised us again and again in so many things!” Laura also loves walking, hiking
with her family and swinging on her swing set. However, cycling and horseback riding give her a different level of
independence and self-determination that especially now as a teen-age are important for her self-esteem.

Growing independence, speech and AAC communication, literacy, and job skills are some of the reasons Laura’s
parents chose The Midland School. Having all day, every day access to teachers and staff at The Midland School
who know how to support an AAC user was incredibly important to Laura’s parents.

Laura’s mom and dad close with “Laura has so much to offer the world: she has a great sense of humor, an affinity
for technology, and has a fun-loving spirit. With great support and teamwork, led by her interests and goals-she
will continue to live her best life.”

Mrs. Hickey adds, “Laura is a wonderful addition to our class. She enjoys her classmates as much as they enjoy
her. She loves to share books from home about animals, one of her biggest interests. She is becoming more
independent in the classroom, taking initiative to tell us her news, and expanding her expressive skills. She loves
to laugh and participate in group activities. We are so grateful she has joined the Midland family.
