About the Y&H
Region
The WEA delivers adult education courses in communities
across the Yorkshire and Humber region. There are a wide
range of subjects and courses to choose from, you can
gain new skills, share existing skills and knowledge, gain
qualifications or enjoy learning something new.
This brochure gives a flavour of the courses running in the region for the
Autumn Term 2018 and into 2019.

We run courses throughout the year and you can search online to find out
what’s on offer near you wea.org.uk/yorkshumber

Our adult education staff are located in the heart of communities,
delivering our courses on your doorstep where most of our students travel
less than 3 miles to attend a class.

We work closely with partners to ensure people are fully supported to
take part in learning. You’ll find a warm welcome in all of our classes, with
experienced tutors and support staff. As well as being educational, our
courses help people to feel less lonely and isolated, and bring people of all
ages and backgrounds together. Find the course that’s right for you and
learn with us, the WEA way!

In addition to the courses listed in this brochure, we run courses and
activities with a range of community organisations, working closely with our
partners to deliver education with the purpose of reducing social exclusion
and bringing people together to improve health, wellbeing and to become
actively engaged in their community. These community courses support
a wide range of groups including adults with learning and/or physical
disabilities, adults living in areas of disadvantage and unemployment,
people with lived experience of mental health difficulties, vulnerable men
and women, and black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. We welcome
the opportunity to connect with organisations to raise aspirations through
education.

My journey of recovery
with reading & writing

Attending a reading group in Barnsley, student Diane shares her
time with the WEA and the importance of reading…

“For me the reading group has helped me to grow and develop as a person within
a friendly and safe environment. I have been encouraged to read out some of my
stories and poems which I have written myself, giving me a voice. The group have
been supportive towards me and I have received some positive feedback from
people which has allowed me to gain lots of confidence.
I feel like I have achieved a sense of wellbeing on my journey of recovery. I have a
thirst for knowledge and enjoy listening to stories that
inspire the imagination, tap into the creative mind, and leave you wanting to
explore the different characters. The types that allow you to seek the unknown,
escape from reality; be captivated while discovering a world of invention and spirit
of adventure.
I have found that being mentally ill doesn’t make you any less of a person; we are
just as important as anyone else, needing to be accepted for who we are”.

                                            There is nothing you cannot
do if you put your mind to it,
if I can do it anyone can.

Rosemary really is
‘Changing Lives’
At the Changing Lives Women’s Centre in Doncaster,
WEA tutor Rosemary is helping learners to improve
their wellbeing through learning about beauty in her
Top to Toe course and developing new communication
techniques in her Confidence Building course.

Rosemary has been a dedicated WEA tutor for over 12 years,
frequently creating new courses to inspire her learners. All of her
courses have underpinning themes of improving wellbeing and
providing a safe space for women to learn new skills and meet new
people.
Student Lizzy has not only increased her own confidence and
knowledge, she says that Rosemary’s class has had “a big
psychological impact”. Inspired by Rosemary’s commitment to
heightening wellbeing in others, Lizzy plans to share this impact with
the wider community as she hopes to rent a room in a beauty salon
to run a weekly session called Wellbeing Wednesdays. “I want to help
people who feel down, and help them feel better about themselves”.
For other learners, it wasn’t the beauty aspect of the course that first
caught their eye, but the opportunity to improve their confidence
and challenge themselves. Student Linda says “I’m usually stuck
inside four walls.” Coming to Rosemary’s class “has helped me, it’s
raised my confidence. It’s a small step, but it’s made a big difference”.
Rosemary’s Confidence Building class aims to increase confidence
in communicating in order to minimise isolation and promote
integration. Carla has continued with the class since last year.
Carla cares for her two young children with disabilities, as well as
volunteering with homeless people. She says “Usually I don’t have
any time for me, this gives me respite. I’m a bit more me”.

I want to help people who feel
down, and help them feel better
about themselves

Back from
the brink
In 2016, Richard’s life was turned upside
down by a violent crime. He lost his home
and his income. His mental health suffered.
Then he found support from the Stonham
Home Group, a support service and long-
standing partner of the WEA in Rotherham.
Richard is looking forward again.

“After my ordeal, I found it hard to do new things or to
meet new people. So when Stonham recommended
I join a WEA drop-in group at a local library, I’ll be
honest: I didn’t want to go. But I needed to get out, so
I agreed. There was this lady there called Julie, who
was the tutor. She was so kind and welcoming – always
laughing and smiling. She reminded me a lot of the late,
great Victoria Wood.
As the course went on, I found myself opening up to
Julie. My current course is called “On the Up!” and that’s
how I feel. I am now more confident and I can talk about
my problems more. I still have bad days and find things
hard, but as soon as I see Julie and her big smiling face,
things just seem to get better.
I was then invited to the WEA York conference. That
was a good day out. I learned a lot more about the
WEA, and also found out they have volunteers and are
always looking for more. One thing led to another, and
I’m now a volunteer and member of the Rotherham
Branch, which is amazing.
I’m still alive because of the extraordinary people at
Stonham. That’s a fact. And if it wasn’t for all Julie’s hard
work, her laughter, her smiles – oh, and her amazing
baking - I wouldn’t be as confident as I am today.
I’m honoured to call you a true friend, Julie. Thank you”.
23 - 24

I want to help people
who feel down, and help
them feel better about
themselves
