HERITAGE TORONTO 2018 TOURS

Whether you are a life-long Torontonian, new to the city, or just
visiting for a weekend, Heritage Toronto’s Tours are the best way
to experience the city. In 2018, we will walk Toronto’s waterfront,
hike through ravines, and explore over 88 acres of Toronto’s parkland.

We are proud to announce exciting additions to our 24th Tour
Season: the return of bus tours, the introduction of Emerging
Historians into the program (pg. 26), and the launch of 10 new
tours. Tours run from May until October. Bring a water bottle,
wear comfortable shoes, and dress for the weather – tours go
rain or shine!

Tour Registration
We encourage you to register at heritagetoronto.org. Not only will
registration guarantee you a spot on the tour, it’s also the best way
to receive updates and additional tour materials.

Donation of $10 encouraged

Heritage Toronto is a charity that must raise the majority of our
operating funds. We only succeed in our work because of our
supporters. Please donate $10 on tours to help us cover costs.
Charitable tax receipts will be issued for donations of $20 or more.

About the Cover
2018 marks the centennial of women’s right to vote in Ontario.
Although a milestone accomplishment, the right was limited to
white women and many continued to be excluded. This year,
our programs will reflect on and celebrate the achievements of
women and all those who challenged inequality based on race,
gender, sexuality, and class. Each of the individuals featured on
this year’s cover played a role in this history, and the ongoing
work towards gender equality and a fair and just society.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
It is my pleasure to extend greetings and a warm welcome to the
participants of the 2018 Heritage Toronto Tour Season. Welcome
to our beautiful city.

Heritage Toronto is a valuable agency of the City that is at the
forefront of establishing an understanding and appreciation of
our city’s past and present history.

I welcome everyone to the heritage tours that showcase Toronto’s
waterfront, ravines and parklands and highlight our city’s rapidly
changing neighbourhoods.

Toronto is Canada’s largest city, the fourth largest in North
America, and home to a diverse population of about 2.8 million
people, who come from all over the globe to settle here and call
our city home.

On behalf of Toronto City Council, please accept my best wishes
for continued success this season.

Yours truly,

John Tory
Mayor of Toronto

EMERGING HISTORIANS

Emerging Historians at the Heritage Toronto Awards, 2017. Image: Herman Custodio

We are excited to introduce our new Emerging Historians
Program, providing students and young professionals with
opportunities to develop practical skills, build their professional
networks, and shape the future of Toronto. Launched in Fall 2017,
we hosted 30 emerging historians at the Heritage Toronto Awards
with the support of our Awards sponsors.

In 2018, we are growing the program through our Tours. For
the past few months, six Emerging Historians have been hard
at work to create new walking tours. They have each been
partnered with an experienced leader, who is taking them
through the process of developing a tour, from research, to
writing, to logistical planning, and finally to the presentation.

We invite you to experience their hard work first hand by
attending one (or all) of the Emerging Historian tours:

Architecture of a Neighbourhood: Downtown Yonge
     Caitlin Ryan (pg. 9)
Creating Toronto: The Story of A City
     Shannon Hamilton (pg. 12)

Natalie Lem and Shayda Spakowski (pg. 15)
Yonge Street: The Heart of Music City

This program would not be possible without the support of
our 2018 Emerging Historians Sponsors. Thank you for your
commitment to empowering youth and fostering the next wave
of Toronto’s city builders.
