1Welcome
Our programme of courses has been drawn up in recognition of a
need for the provision of training for education practitioners in order
to enhance understanding and knowledge of speech, language and
communication needs (SLCN) so that you are able to support
children with SLCN and to assist collaborative working with our
speech and language therapists. The Bercow “10 years on
report” (2018) concluded that an understanding of speech, language
and communication needs should be embedded in initial
qualifications and in continuing professional development for all
relevant practitioners - www.bercow10yearson.com
Studies have shown that education practitioners often lack
confidence in supporting children and young people with SLCN due
to limited training opportunities in the areas of speech, language and
communication. (Dockrell and Lindsay 2001; Mroz and Hall 2003;
Mroz 2006a; Mroz 2006b; Glover, 2015).
Our programme of courses has been carefully developed to support
the needs of individuals or whole staff groups in Early Years,
Primary, Secondary, and Specialist settings.
Leeds Community Healthcare Children’s Speech and Language
Therapy Service provides a range of quality training packages that
will enable you to meet the needs of children with speech, language
and communication needs.
All of our training courses are written and delivered by Specialist
Speech and Language Therapists and quality and evidence based
intervention strategies are guaranteed.
Our aim is to empower you and your staff to feel confident in
carrying out speech and language interventions to develop the
communication skills of the pupils in your setting.

3Why does our training matter?
Undetected and/or untreated SLCN can lead to low levels of literacy, poor
educational attainment and difficulties finding employment later in life. In turn, this
can lead to a perpetuation of the poverty trap and entering a cycle of health
problems, including mental health and health inequalities. (RCSLT 2013)
Damian Hinds (Education Minister) reports 28% of children finish their reception
year still without the early communication and reading skills they need to thrive.
www.gov,uk July 2018
“It is a persistent scandal that we have children starting school and struggling to
communicate, to speak in full sentences”
All children need environments which support the development of their speech,
language and communication skills. Levels of knowledge and expertise will vary
between settings depending on the needs of the children and the professionals
involved. (RCSLT 2011)
Our training team
All our trainers are specialist speech and language therapists who hold national
training qualifications and have extensive experience in delivering training for
professionals, parents and carers in Leeds and the surrounding areas.
We know and appreciate the environment you are working in and the
experiences you have on a daily basis working with children who have speech,
language and communication needs.
Each trainer has a profile; you will be sent one as part of your course
confirmation pack. The profiles detail the experience, job role, title and other
interesting information about your trainer, allowing you to get to know them prior
to your course.
Although professional in our approach, we like to ensure our courses are
interactive and that each attendee is engaged. The majority of our training
courses consist of a mixture of theory and practise, a method which allows
attendees to get the best out of the learning opportunity.
