OUR STORY
The Tyrol Club started at Hollyburn, the center of skiing of the Lower Mainland in the late
nineteen forties and early fifties. Hollyburn had a chairlift with wooden towers, rope tows, a
ski jump and Hans Brunner’s ski school. Off the slopes ski school instructors Stefan Ples,
Norbert Kamnig, Fips Broda and Erhard Franks used to meet in Café Seabreeze in the West
End, where in the fall of 1952 they and 30 others attended the first AGM for the Tyrol Ski and
Mountain Club. Club activities switched to Seymour soon after, where the club rented a cabin
from the Parks Board. By 1953, when the club was officially incorporated. The club reorganized
in 1954, new directors were assigned.

In 1955 the club had the opportunity purchase a $1,000 cabin on Seymour. Member John
Hecht, the Austrian consul, arranged a loan of $500, and the rest was collected from members.
The cabin was ideally placed at the foot of one of the rope tows. A night’s stay cost a mere
twenty-five cents. The guest book contains many familiar names: Ples, Frowein, Gersel, Sieber,
Planinsic and Pichler, along with names from other contexts.

When a property came on the market for $800, the club bought it with bank loans personally
guaranteed by the members, and then a second lot six months later for $1200. In 1961 Mr.
Gebhard, who had a five-acre parcel of land, offered it to the club, which, along with another
club, the Sons of Norway, bought it in 1962 for $5,000. In 1964/65 the small hut behind the
current caretaker’s house was built, but still the dream of another cabin seemed remote.

The main problem was financing. However, at this time government regulations allowed any
club to charter an airplane to Europe, selling seats to members for half or less the cost of a
commercial fare, while still making money. While only club members of longer than six months
were allowed on the flights, the system was open to abuses. The Tyrol Ski and Mountain Club
and many other clubs used the charter flights to make some money and give members an
affordable way to visit Europe. There were three flights in 1965, five in 1966, and in all the club
organized nearly twenty flights between 1965 and 1969 realizing $60 to $70,000, and three-
quarters financing construction of the lodge, known now as the Tyrol.

Construction of the Tyrol began in 1966. It was designed by member Lloyd House, who took
the design from a sixteenth century Scottish farmhouse. Members did most of the work,
though professionals did the interior and the framework. A few out-of-town carpenters came
up for the fun of working on it. The club would pay them a couple of dollars per hour for their
time. Passers-by would occasionally help, required beforehand to pay a $5 to join the club.

The charter flights ceased after 1969 because too many clubs were competing for passengers
and government regulation had made the flights less profitable. But by this time it didn’t
matter, the Tyrol had been built and paid for. Construction coincided with the installation of
the first lifts at Whistler Creekside. The original access to the Tyrol was across Nita Lake
because the west side road wasn’t created until 1967.

The club kept its cabin on Seymour until 1972 when the Parks Board razed it and all the other
Seymour cabins. But it is clear in retrospect that once built, the Tyrol determined the future
course of the club. The focus of activities inevitably moved from Vancouver to Whistler where
the developing downhill facilities, its excellent touring, back country possibilities and, more
recently, cross-country trails moved the club’s aim from supporting skiing to simply enjoying it.
The early development of skiing on the Lower Mainland owes much to the Tyrol Ski and
Mountain Club which supported an extensive instructional and junior racing program. The club
once sponsored a “Tyrol Jump” and the Tyrol Giant Slalom, which, after being held for years on
Seymour, was moved to Whistler in 1967. But other activities were less easily switched and
have withered. The junior racing program was absorbed into the Nancy Greene League.

The club organizes a wide range of popular events each year, hikes and excursions to other
mountains. But some of the most appreciated events are impromptu, decided on the spur of
the moment or over an evening’s repast at the Tyrol. This is one of the most rewarding
features of belonging to a club of strong individuals with similar interests: someone always has
a good idea to try tomorrow.

President’s Welcome

Dear Member(s),
Thank you for your interest in a membership with Tyrol Ski & Mountain Club. We believe the
most successful non-profit clubs are those built on a foundation of long-standing relationships
between members. As such, our approach is a community based, family-friendly club with our
primary goal to attract a diverse group of members looking to integrate into the rich social
fabric of our community, all while indulging in a unique and vibrant Whistler facility.
The ambiance of the Tyrol Lodge reflects the rich character of the property and the amenities
offered within the multi-purpose facility are available to members, their families and guests to
enjoy year-round. Unique, European design, warm décor and a central location make Tyrol
Lodge a popular choice for members to enjoy the many activities Whistler has to offer.
Tyrol Ski & Mountain Club stands out against other non-profit clubs because it offers
outstanding amenities and activities at a reasonable initiation fee. As well, our location near
Creekside and the view from lodge is second to none. Joining one of Whistler’s oldest Clubs
could not be easier; all that is required is sponsorship by an existing member and participation
in a Lodge maintenance work weekend.
We have enclosed within this “New Member” packet all the documents required to become a
valued member. Join the Tyrol Ski & Mountain Club family by completing and returning the
following items to our office.

Warm regards,

Morgan Goldie
President Tyrol Ski & Mountain Club

Updated: September 30, 2019
Unused portions of a block expire at the end of each TSMC fiscal year (expire on
September 30th of the following year). They cannot be carried forward to the next TSMC fiscal
year (Oct. 1 to Sept. 30).
Premium Peak Stay Booking Privileges purchased are valid for a maximum of 5-years. They
expire on September 30th of the 5th year. E.g. if they are purchased on Oct. 5, 2019, the
Premium Peak Stay Booking Privileges expire on Sept. 30, 2024.

5.4 Regular off-peak stay booking:
   a. Is a lodge booking that does not include a peak stay, as defined by the Board.
   b. may be made as of Nov. 1, for dates between Nov. 1 and Oct. 31 of the next year,
provided all outstanding fees are paid in full.
   c. available to all members. Some additional restrictions apply which are summarized in
by-laws and other procedures related to club operations.

5.5 Last minute stay bookings are:
   a. bookings made less than 10 days in advance, but more than 48 hours in advance of
      arrival

5.6 Methodology:
Premium Peak Stay Bookings are awarded by a lottery on October 1 and then on a first come
first served basis until October 31. Regular Peak Stay bookings are awarded by a lottery on
November 1 and then on a first come first served basis thereafter. Regular non-peak bookings
are available for all members beginning Nov. 1 on a first come first served basis. Lotteries are
conducted as follows:

                                               12
Updated: September 30, 2019
All advance booking requests received prior to the lottery will be assigned a
random number generated by a random number generator. Multiple booking requests will be
assigned a priority number by the member (1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd , etc.). Single stay bookings will be
assigned a 1 st priority number for the purposes of the lottery.
Bookings are then sorted in descending order by the priority number assigned (1 is first), then by
the number of nights in the stay, followed by the random number generated; 1 st priority goes to
stays 3 nights or longer with the highest random number are the first confirmed bookings.
Bookings will be assigned from top to bottom, accommodating as many room nights requested
as possible.
If the full number of nights in the booking are not available, the closest booking available to
the requested booking will be made as an option for the member; these are then confirmed
with payment by the member or released if the member does not wish to confirm a partial
booking.

5.7 Advance booking payment terms:
Payment for stays booked will be by e-transfer sent to payments@tyrolskiclub.com and must
include the member’s name, number of persons, number of nights, and date of arrival. An
alternative method of payment in advance by cheque may be approved by the Treasurer.
Members booking stays by lottery will have one week to pay for their stays, once the booking
is confirmed. If advance booking stays are not paid for within 7 days of being notified of the
lottery results these room nights will be released for booking on a first come first served basis,
as per the booking policy.
Spouses do not increase the number of Advance Bookings Privileges available for booking for
that family unit (e.g. an Out of Town member and their spouse may only book 2 stays per year
unit only has two stays).
All other advance stays must be paid for in full in advance to confirm the requested
reservation. Reservations requested and not paid for in full within 48 hours of confirmation of
availability, will be for booking on a first come first served basis, by all members, as per the
booking policy.
Confirmed reservations are non-refundable unless cancelled 3 weeks in advance of the first
day of your stay, or rebooked by another member. The lodge manager will be responsible for
assigning rooms to fill cancelled reservations in accordance with the waitlist. If the room is
rented for less than the original advance booking, the original booking member is required to
pay the difference. The waitlist for available stays has priority when re-booking cancelations.
                                                 13
Updated: September 30, 2019
Room cancellations will be refunded with room credits, not cash.
Members who fail to use an advanced booking stay without cancelation or who repeatedly
book stays and then cancel the whole stay, or a portion of the stay may be subject to discipline
by the Board (i.e. intentional gaming of the lottery system or guest reservation system to gain
booking advantage will not be tolerated.)

5.8 Other Booking Notes:
Members are entitled to book one guest room, along with their advance booking stays.
Members booking guests must be at the lodge with their guests at the beginning of the guest’s
stay. If booking a guest with one of their Premium Peak Stay Bookings, the guest’s booking
counts toward the member’s premium Peak Stay Booking allotment. Guests pay the applicable
guest rates, as per the Guest Booking Policy
Members are responsible for their guests regardless of whether they are at the lodge with
their guest.
Members may not be booked in as guests.
Spouses and dependents must share the same room as the regular member unless otherwise
authorized by the Lodge Manager.

6. GUEST BOOKING PROCEDURES:
Guests of Tyrol Ski and Mountain Club Members are welcome at the Tyrol Lodge and we
appreciate some guests will not use the lodge enough to justify becoming a member.
However, our goal is to encourage those who enjoy the facilities to join the club and as such a
sliding scale rate will apply to repeat stays including a maximum number of stays. This policy
was implemented in October 2017 and is reviewed annually by the Board. It will be adjusted
from time to time as required.

6.1 Guest booking Policies
6.1.1. Booking with Sponsor Member on-site: As a general policy, the sponsoring
Member has the responsibility to make sure that their guest is familiar with the
Tyrol Lodge rules, policies, and procedures, and therefore should be on site to
provide this information to their Guests.

6.1.2. Booking without the sponsoring member on-site: Guests are permitted to stay
at the Tyrol Lodge, when their Sponsor Member is not present, provided that:
                     a. The Sponsoring Member informs the guests of the Tyrol Lodge rules,
                        policies, and procedures.
                     b. The Lodge Manager is in residence for the duration of their stay (e.g. not
                        on holidays.)
                     c. The Club President and the Operations/Lodge Director are aware of this
                        “unaccompanied stay” by a Guest.

6.1.3. Guest Rates – Sliding Scale Bookings. A sliding scale for guest rates will be used
for guests making bookings. The guest’s stays at the lodge will be at the posted
Guest Rates for themselves and family if applicable. These rated may be discounted or
increased by Board of Directors from time to time in response to demand.
6.1.4. Guest Sliding Scale Booking Stay Rates. These rates apply to stays, not nights.
For example if an adult stays for the 1st time ever they would pay $25 for each
consecutive night during that stay. The rate would increase the next time they
stayed at the lodge. Current Member and Guest Rates are posted on our
            website: www.tyrolskiclub.com/?page_id=1913

6.1.5. The maximum # of guest stays for any one individual is 3 times per fiscal year

6.1.6. The guest sliding scale resets for stays Oct 1 each year.

6.1.7. The sliding scale is applied to the Guest Family, or part thereof. If a guest child
comes up a second time and stays in the same room as the Sponsoring Member,
the Guest Child pays the posted rate for the first visit. The next time the child or
any members of that child’s family stay at the lodge they will be charged using the
2nd stay rate and 3rd stay rate thereafter.

Long weekend bookings will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Requests for
changes in occupancy or cancellations of the booking must be made three (3) weeks in
advance of the long weekend, otherwise the payment for that weekend is forfeited (or portion
of the payment in the case of changes to the booking that affect the size of, or number of,
rooms needed). Only members in good standing can make advance bookings (membership
dues are paid in full for the 2018/19 Fiscal Year).

7.2 Winter Season Long Bookings Policy
Purpose: This policy outlines the requirements for members making recurring weekend
   bookings during the winter season.
Definition: The winter season period is defined as the 14 weeks of Whistler Kids ski lessons
starting early to mid-January and finishing in April each year. A recurring winter season
booking is defined as two (2) or more weekends per month, booked in advance. A weekend
booking is defined as a Friday and/or Saturday night booking.
Policy: Members booking recurring weekends in the winter season are required to pay a
deposit of 75% of the cumulative value of the booking at the time of the booking. If
payment is not received within one week of receipt of the booking (at
bookings@tyrolskiclub.com), the booking will be cancelled. Accommodation fees will be
credited against the deposit. Changes in occupancy or cancellations must be made three (3)
weeks in advance of a booking, otherwise the deposit for that booking is forfeited (or
portion of the payment in the case of changes to the booking that affect the size of, or
number of, rooms needed). Sickness is not an exception. Special circumstances must be
approved by both the President and Lodge Operations Director. Only members in good
standing can make advance bookings (membership dues are paid in full for the 2018/19
   Fiscal Year).
NOTE: the BC Family Day and Easter long weekends must be paid 100% in advance. For
clarity refer to the below example and recurring winter weekend booking form.
Example: Family of three (3) booking for every Saturday night for the duration of ski school
i.e. 14 concurrent Saturdays including a night during each statutory long weekend. Deposit
   = (2 nights x $65 x 100%) + (12 nights x $65 x 75%) = $715. If only one adult and one child
stay at the lodge and the change in occupancy is provided with less than three weeks’
notice, the accommodation fees will be the Family of three rate of $65 rather than the rate
for one adult and one child.
