The School of International Liberal Studies (SILS) is Waseda University’s flagship school for the globally minded. SILS was founded in 2004 in an ambitious
attempt to break the mold. Unlike most universities in Japan at the time, SILS conducted its classes in English, actively welcomed international students, and
made it mandatory for students whose mother tongue is Japanese to study abroad for one year.
Message from the Dean
Now, over ten years later, a third of SILS students are from outside Japan, and these international students represent around 50 countries and regions in Asia
and also in the West and Africa, etc. Likewise, SILS has a multinational and globally fluent faculty. In this way, SILS offers a multicultural and multilingual Welcome to SILS! SILS is a community to freely learn various subjects in an
community that is a veritable microcosm of the world at large. In this community, you will encounter many different personalities, values, and ideas, allowing international environment where students independently acquire in English
