    The School of International Liberal Studies (SILS) is Waseda University’s flagship school for the globally minded. SILS was founded in 2004 in an ambitious
    attempt to break the mold. Unlike most universities in Japan at the time, SILS conducted its classes in English, actively welcomed international students, and
    made it mandatory for students whose mother tongue is Japanese to study abroad for one year.

     I decided to study at SILS because of my interest in global environmental issues. I also thought that the
