vegetable, fruit and garden (organic) waste
Household refuse bags
Private individuals who pay the waste substances levy and businesses who pay refuse
collection charges may make use of the municipal service and present their waste to the
collection service. Waste may only be presented for collection in the municipal Refuse (with
print ‘Gemeente Meerssen’). These can be bought at your local store
(e.g. supermarket).
Exception: private individuals households that use the facilities for underground
waste collection (for example: apartment buildings) can dispose of their waste in
the underground container. Concerning residents have received a special pass.
Other businesses must make their own arrangements
for the removal of their waste.
The household refuse bags are collected once a fortnight
(during the evenly numbered weeks).
Household refuse bags may only be placed on the pavement
on the collection day (from 7.30 a.m.).
This will prevent stray animals from tearing the bags open.
In principle you may present as many household refuse bags as you wish.
Fruit, vegetable & garden (organic) waste
Each household that pays the waste substances levy and each business that pays refuse
collection charges receives a green organic waste container from the municipality.
Exception: private individuals households that use the facilities for underground
waste collection (for example: apartment buildings) can dispose of their waste in
the underground container. Concerning residents have received a special pass.
The organic waste containers are emptied every fortnight (in the odd-numbered weeks).
In addition to the organic waste container you may present a maximum
of two bundles of garden waste with a maximum length and circumference
of 1½ metres and a maximum weight of 25 kilograms.
Organic waste is used to make fertile compost.
Therefore please do not place any other kind of waste in the container.
If the organic waste becomes polluted the entire batch is rejected.
Keep the lid of the container closed.
Place a sheet of newspaper in the bottom of the container.
This will prevent the waste from sticking to the bottom and starting to smell.
Mix fruit and vegetable waste with garden waste as much as possible.
Place fish and meat refuse in the municipal Refuse Bag.
This will prevent maggots and stench, while promoting compost formation.
Make sure that your container is clean and empty if you are
going on holiday for a number of weeks.
The organic waste container belongs to the house, so if you are moving
leave it behind clean and empty for the next residents.
Place the container on the pavement on the collection day
(from 7.30 a.m.) with the handle facing the street.
In the event of frost
Place the container in the shed or garage if possible. This will prevent the
waste from freezing and will make the job of the waste collectors much easier.
During warm weather
Place the container in the shade.
Put fish and meat waste in the municipal Refuse Bag.
This prevents maggots and stench.
Strongly smelling food waste such as cauliflower and the
like may also be placed in the municipal Refuse Bag to prevent stench.
Bulky garden trimmings
Bulky garden trimmings (max. 2 m2) can be disposed free of charge at one of the Ecoparks.

Tips for proper usage bottle banks
Please note: bottle banks may only be used for glass Pottery or earthenware may not be placed
in the bottle bank. Glass panes are also not permitted in the bottle bank. This can be handed in at
the Ecoparks.
• Buy products in returnable packaging. This is cheaper for you too!
• Rinse the glass bottles. This prevents stench and dirt.
• Take your empties with you when you go shopping.
It is hardly any bother and keeps things tidy at home!
• Deposit white glass in the white section, green in the green section
and brown and other coloured glass in the brown section of the bottle bank.
• Is the opening too small: take it back home and break it carefully
into smaller pieces that do fit.
• Do not leave boxes, lids, corks or glass behind. Take it back home. Prevent accidents by
carefully picking up broken bits of glass and placing it in the bottle bank. The municipality must
clean up litter and the costs involved are charged to the residents via the waste substances
levy.
• Only use the bottle bank between 08.00-20.00 hours.
This prevents the residents in the vicinity from suffering noise nuisance.
• If you notice that a bottle bank is full quite often, please report this
to the Environmental Affairs section, tel. 14 043.

21Tips to minimize your waste
What could be even better than separating waste? Minimizing household waste, of
course!
Bring your own grocery bags
Do you need a plastic bag? This is a question we are all asked when doing our grocery
shopping. We use an average of four to five plastic bags per week. That means that we use
about 234 plastic bags per year and many of these are only used once. Instead, bring your
own grocery bag to do the shopping or reuse those plastic bags that you have.
Minimize unwanted print advertising
With the ‘Nee-Nee’ or ‘Nee-Ja’ sticker, you will no longer receive any print advertising in
your postbox. That saves up to 1,700 advertising leaflets per year. Request a free sticker
from the municipal Customer Contact Centre (Klant Contact Centrum) by calling 14 043 or
sending an e-mail to info@meerssen.nl. If you do want to read what the advertising flyers
have to offer, why not look them up online or use an app?
Fill your water bottle with tap water
283 million bottles of mineral water are consumed every year in the Netherlands. Prevent
waste and fill a bottle with tap water. This is just as refreshing and it will save you money.
Lunch boxes instead of plastic bags
Don't put your daily lunch in a sandwich bag. Rather buy a good
lunch box. This will save hundreds of plastic bags a year ending up
as waste.
Buy fresh and uncut foods
Healthy, delicious, cheap, and less packaging waste.
Don't waste food
Every year, we throw away nearly 50 kg of edible food per person. This amounts to a
waste of about 150 euros per person. By buying smart, cooking only what you need, and
storing food, you can prevent wastage. Use a list when you go food shopping. See what
you have in your cupboards first. Try not to buy and cook more than is necessary. Also
keep an eye on the expiry dates.
Breathing new life into broken goods
From clothing and electrical appliances to bicycles and toys; at the Repair Café they won't
say no. Look on www.repaircafe.org to find a Repair Café near you. You can also work with
the people in your neighbourhood and help each other repair broken goods for free.
Second life
At the second-hand store, cast-off goods are given a second life. Are you bored of an item
in your home or are you looking for a special gift? Then visit a second-hand store.

Sharing, lending, and borrowing
It is not often that you need to use a drill, a beer tap, or a party tent. There are many
items that you only use every now and again while they lay around and collect dust the
rest of the time. Instead of buying items such as these, you can also borrow them from
your neighbours through www.peerby.nl or you can lend your own things to others.
T PS 22Tips for separating waste
Separating waste is very important. We would like to share a few tips to help you
separate your waste.
Remove your waste bin from the kitchen
By removing the waste bin from the kitchen, you are less likely to throw things away that
can and should be separated.
Make separation easy
Place different waste bins that will allow you to easily separate organic, PMD, usable goods,
and non-reusable waste.
Once a bin is full, empty it in the municipal household refuse bag, the organic waste
container, or a Plastic Heroes bag. You can dispose of reusable goods at a second-hand
shop or at a relevant drop-off location for charity for goods such as reusable clothing and
shoes.
Empty all packages
Empty all bags and packages before disposing of them. In this way, you contribute to the
proper separation of waste.
Flatten all packaging
Try to flatten all packaging waste. This will create more space in your waste bin or refuse
bag.
Do not throw away food
Did you buy too many food products or did you receive far too many food gifts (as we tend
to do over Christmas, for example)? You can drop off non-perishable foods at the
Ruggesteun and/or the Food Bank. Please do note the expiry dates of these items.
Spoiled food
Take spoiled food out of the packaging and separate it.
This small effort can make a difference!
Set a positive example
Get your children involved in helping you to
separate waste. This can be a valuable learning
experience that will last them a lifetime.
