State of Health Care
• KSU Plan Costs
   • Several initiatives and plan design changes were
taken to control costs in 2019 and have been
     doing this since 2017
   • 2019 is running at about 6%-7% over last year
meaning health care costs could increase by 3
million dollars or more over the 2018 plan year.
• Peer Institutions
   • KSU continues to review programs and benefits
     of our peer IUC institutions

Note: Nothing in this presentation affects the terms of any existing collective bargaining agreement

State of Healthcare
• Self-funded Plan (like most large employers)

• The claims (health care costs) are incurred and
  paid directly by the University

• Medical Mutual of Ohio, CVS/Caremark, and
  EyeMed administer the payments

• The only true “insurance” is for high-dollar claims
  (stop loss)

• The total cost (claims, administration, and stop
loss) is almost $60 million dollars

Our Collective Goals

• Continue our focus on the health and wellness of all our
  employees

• Identify opportunities to drive quality and optimize costs

• Explore opportunities to bring contributions in line with
  higher education benchmark

• Consider plan design changes that are competitive, provide
  choice and manage cost

• Continue communication efforts through education, training
  and outreach

Our Approach to Healthcare

Continued Focus on KSU’s Health Care Strategy

• View benefits from a total rewards perspective to effectively
position Kent State University in attracting and retaining
  talent
• Offer quality, affordable, and competitive healthcare benefits
that support a commitment to your health and wellness
• Mitigate the trend of rising healthcare costs in a sustainable
  way
• Engage all stakeholders and constituencies in understanding
healthcare benefits, strategies and trends with effective
  communication, training, and outreach strategies

Healthcare Plan Cost Trend
                   (NOT SUSTAINABLE)

                                                          Total Healthcare Plan Cost
Potential of $23+ million increase in net
Spend from KSU with current plans over the
       next 5 years (2017-2021)

                                                                  Cost After Employee Contribution

50%+ increase in EE contributions with current Employee Share of Premium
plans over the next 5 years (2017-2021)

Note that we have been able to bend down this curve through the changes that
have been made.

• This worksheet will assist you in determining the most cost advantageous plan. Please note
that the most cost advantageous plan may not be the best plan for you. Your actual medical
and pharmacy expenses can vary drastically from the information that you enter into this
  spreadsheet.
• Billed medical charges from the prior year can be found by logging in to your MMO’s website
OR, if you wish to assume that you meet your full deductible and coinsurance maximum,
please enter $11,000 for Single and $22,000 for Family.
• Billed prescription charges from the prior year can be found by logging in to your
  CVS/Caremark website
• Please consider the network as well as personal risk tolerance when making your selection.
• Disclaimer: This spreadsheet is to be used as a guide only. Cost calculations are for In-network
only and Pharmacy costs are assumed to accrue at 10% coinsurance. In addition, this model
does not account for unique circumstances attributed to the embedded aspect of the HDHP
family plan. Embedded deductibles have two components: the individual deductible for each
family member, and the family deductible. The actual costs associated with your specific
situation will vary. Please contact MMO at 1-800-382-5729 or Anthem at 1-866-870-1780 and
speak to a healthcare professional about your specific circumstances.
