guide to mental health in
Manchester 2006MIND young people's directory4 11/4/06 14:38 Page 2
Welcome to the Young Person’s Directory 2006!
This guide is a “one stop” shop designed to cover all aspects affecting
the mental health of young people living in Greater Manchester.
It consists of lists of services and useful points of contact for young
people, as well as “real life” stories and pictures.
It was developed by Mind in Manchester and YASP (which is a HARP
project) who worked closely with young people to develop the guide
and produce a series of stories highlighting the main issues.
This included group and individual consultations together with artistic
development sessions with Andrassy Design.
This guide acts as a signpost to both young people and service
providers and helps people access appropriate networks of support.
Service lists are included together with useful contact numbers and
email addresses.
Mind in Manchester and YASP would like to thank all the young people
who contributed their stories and contributed to the development of
the guide. In particular, we would like to thank Wahida, Rehana, Katie,
Emma, Shaun, Louise, Zion, Jo, Gurpreet, Arran, Jorden, Jason, Will,
Gregg, Ilhan, John, Kelly, Aziz, Marina and Nelly.

I moved in with my Aunty in Manchester but we weren’t getting on so
the voices were telling me to kill myself. I took an overdose. I told my
sister and she called an ambulance, which took me to hospital. I told the
Doctor that I was ill but he refused to change my medication - I stayed
in hospital for a whole year! I was discharged to a residential home
where they helped me change my Doctor and my medication. I haven’t
heard my voices since and that was four years ago! I am well now and
am still taking my medication. I was in the nursing home for two years
