Abstraction and watercolour share a huge range of possibilities: from control to unpredictability — strategy to serendipity, delicate
to bold — they’re positively made for each other! And just as watercolour requires skills and experience to master, so too does
abstraction. Through fun and challenging exercises, we’ll explore several facets of abstraction, and along the way, you’ll learn
how to use colour, composition, concept and method to create interesting and personally relevant abstractions in watercolour. All
aboard for adventure!

techniques [hatching, shading, blocking and values]. Composition is fundamental and will be the second element discussed to

VINTAGE PORTRAITS IN CHARCOAL

Charcoal is a wonderfully malleable “transition” medium and is the perfect first step towards blending and painting techniques. In
this course we’ll work with the principles of realism but push our range of values to create drama and movement. We’ll work with
the smudges and strokes of charcoal to create a much more spontaneous and “painterly” effect. See Foundations of Realism: Skill
Building Series at Carey Alvez bio on website.
