Daily Life at Gleneagle High School vs Middle School: ➢ Longer classes ➢ More teachers ➢ More students ➢ More freedom ➢ More responsibility ➢ Two semesters
Semester System ➢ Students take a minimum of 8 courses in a school year ➢ Semester 1: September to January ➢ Semester 2: February to June ➢ Students take 4 courses each semester
Daily Block Schedule Current Schedule (2019-2020): Block 1 – 8:00 to 9:20 Block 2 – 9:25 to 10:45 Block 3 – 10:50 to 12:10 Lunch – 12:10 to 12:50 Block 4 – 12:55 to 2:15 Block 5 – 2:20 to 3:40 Block Y – 3:45 to 5:05 *You attend 4 blocks out of the 5 available, and in the same 4 blocks each day for the semester

Customized Learning Time (CL) CL is a time for students to complete schoolwork or to seek additional help from their classroom teachers. Teachers can also use CL time as an extension of their classroom learning activities or as a resource when designing individual learning expectations for their students. ➢ Occurs twice a week ➢ 30 minutes ➢ Students need to be in a current teacher’s classroom for the full CL period ➢ During CL, the MPR will be an available learning space for a designated grade each week, for students to work individually or in small groups

Another Option for English & Socials JumpstART 9 Integration of Art, English & Social Studies curricula. ➢ Credit for English 9, Socials 9, Graphic Arts 9 and Visual Arts 9 ➢ Work with peers with similar interests for half of each day in a small community of students ➢ Join other grade 9 students for the other half of the school day (Math, Science, P.E. and one more elective) ➢ Choose courses on course selection form AND fill out online application form at www.jumpstartgleneagle.ca by March 13th
JumpstART is a thematically integrated enriched Humanities/Fine Arts program offered only at Gleneagle. Are you a student who is: • excited to find connections between English, Social Studies, Art? • interested in big ideas like freedom, identity, and independence? • always drawing, doodling or thinking visually all the time? • looking to express your learning in diverse and new ways? • keen to contribute to and take part in building a community? • wanting to create art that explodes with meaning? To apply, you must submit a course selection form and complete the online application at www.jumpstartgleneagle.ca by March 13th.
Required Courses Everyone takes: ➢ Math 9 or Math 9 Honours ➢ Science 9 or Science 9 Honours For Math and Science, you have the option to choose the regular class OR an Honours class. *Honours classes cover the regular curriculum at a faster pace, allowing time for more in-depth study, enriched activities and challenge opportunities *The Honours course will only happen if there are enough requests to run the class
Entrance into Honours 1. Students choose the desired honours course/s on their course selection sheet. 2. Student selection will be determined by previous academic performance. 3. Grade 8 subject teacher initials their approval on your course selection sheet. Honours courses for Grade 9 are: ➢ Science 9 Honours ➢ Math 9 Honours
Required Courses Everyone takes: ➢ Physical & Health Education 9 *If you choose Band 9 as an elective, your PHE class will be every second day all year, and alternate with your Band class *If you are not in Band 9, your PHE class will be every day for one semester Everyone takes: ➢ Career Education 9 This course does not take up a block in your timetable. The curriculum is delivered through special assemblies, presentations and online assignments. It covers Personal Development, Connections to the Community, and Life and Career Plan.
Required Courses Everyone takes: ➢ Digital Literacy 10 (COL) This course does not take up a block in your timetable. The curriculum is delivered through your English, Social Studies and Science classes, along with special assemblies. You will receive 4 Grade 10 credits for successfully completing this course.
BYOD To learn about 21st century Digital Literacy skills, going to a lab space periodically is not ideal nor possible on a large scale. BYOD allows students to effectively use technology in their regular classrooms on a daily basis, deepen their learning, increase engagement and prepare for the future.
English as an Additional Language
Elective Courses: ART ➢ Visual Art 9: Introduction ➢ Ceramics & Sculpture 9 ➢ Graphic Arts 9 ➢ Photography 10 ➢ Yearbook 10 ➢ JumpstART: Visual Arts 9 ➢ JumpstART: Graphic Arts 9 *Note: If you are applying to the JumpstART program, you must select both of the JumpstART art courses for electives, plus one more elective from any department.
Elective Courses: Business Education ➢ Marketing and Entrepreneurship 9 • business principles, technology in marketing, brand recognition, 4 P’s of marketing, the psychology of consumers; online technologies to market, finance and measure business strategies ➢ Business Communications and Keyboarding 9 • basic office skills for a business environment that also help you be more efficient in school; increase your typing speed and apply those skills to computer applications such as MS Word, MS Excel and MX PowerPoint
Elective Courses: Home Economics ➢ Food Studies 9 • Principles of food preparation, healthy food choices, food safety and sanitation; make delicious snacks and meals throughout the course; explore First People’s traditional food; explore factors that influence choice and availability of food options
Elective Courses: Information Technology & Digital Media Arts ➢ Media Arts 9 • Graphics, Web Publishing, Desktop Publishing and Multimedia; learn how to make your assignments stand out and dazzle; explore the use of Photoshop, Garageband, Premiere, Flash, Word and Pages; develop your own website
