We are pleased to announce that Tom Powers has joined Talking to your parents about money is always difficult, especially when the money you’re talking about is theirs. They belong to a generation that was taught to keep their information private and not to share their concerns openly. Even if they need help, they may be unwilling to talk to you because it’s “none of your business,” or because they’re afraid to give up control over their own financial affairs. If they’re reluctant to talk to you, make it clear that you respect their needs and concerns. However, don’t be afraid to express your own needs and concerns as well. Their financial situation may impact you also, particularly if they become unable to support or care for themselves. At the very least, you should find out where they keep their personal records; discuss housing, health care, and budgeting issues; and find out what steps they have taken to plan their estate. What if they still refuse to talk to you? If they’re capable of managing their affairs for now, you may want to drop the matter and reapproach them later. Page 4 • FeatherSoundNews.com • April 2022 The Legal Corner - Robert W. Bible, Jr. Dying Without a Last Will – The Estate Plan Florida Law Writes for You Robert W. Bible, Jr. If a person dies without a Last Will, it is Attorney at Law called “intestate”. When a person dies Office: 727-538-7739 Cell: 727-710-5166 intestate (the “intestate decedent”), an estate b.bible@BobBibleLaw.com plan is created for that person by Florida’s intestate statutes. How probate property of an intestate decedent is distributed, and to whom, is dependent on whether the intestate decedent was survived by a spouse, whether there are surviving descendants, and other surviving heir dynamics. If an intestate decedent is survived by a spouse, with no surviving descendants (i.e., children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren), or if all surviving descendants are also the descendants of the surviving spouse and the surviving spouse has no other descendants, the surviving spouse receives the entire intestate probate estate (see homestead exception discussed below). If the intestate decedent is survived by a spouse and descendants, any of whom are not also the descendants of the surviving spouse, or if all surviving descendants of the intestate decedent are descendants of the surviving spouse but the surviving spouse also has other descendants, the surviving spouse only receives one-half of the intestate probate estate, with the intestate decedent’s surviving descendants receiving the other one-half share (see automobile and household item exceptions discussed below). If an intestate decedent is not survived by a spouse, Florida’s intestate laws create layers of priority distribution entitlements, commencing with any surviving descendants, then parents, then siblings or descendants of any deceased siblings, then grandparents, then aunts/uncles or descendants of deceased aunts or uncles, and on down the line of kindred until a recipient entitled to the intestate decedent’s intestate probate estate is located. Once a layer has a surviving member, the process stops at that layer. For instance, if there is no surviving spouse, but there are surviving children, you stop at that level, and distribution of the intestate probate estate is determined by the total number of children the intestate decedent had during life. If, for example, the intestate decedent had five kids, with one already being deceased but leaving two kids, the intestate probate estate would be divided into five shares, with one share going to each of the surviving children, and the fifth share being equally split between the intestate decedent’s two grandkids. If, under Florida’s intestate statute, siblings become the surviving heirs, any children of a deceased sibling (nephews or nieces) who survive the intestate decedent will share the portion of the intestate probate estate which would otherwise have been allocated to that deceased sibling had he or she survived (based upon the total number of siblings the intestate decedent had during life). Florida’s intestate statutes apply only to property becoming part of the intestate decedent’s intestate probate estate. For instance, life insurance payable to a named designated beneficiary passes to that beneficiary, and does not become part of the intestate probate estate. Similarly, jointly owned property with rights of survivorship would pass to the surviving joint owner, and not become part of the intestate probate estate. Certain property interests, even though otherwise becoming subject to Florida’s intestate statutes, have special provisions which govern how they pass, and to whom, as described below. Homestead: If an intestate decedent has “homestead” real property becoming subject to Florida’s intestate statutes, distribution of that homestead is governed by special rules. If the intestate decedent is survived by a spouse and one or more descendants (which could simply include a grandchild), the surviving spouse must decide whether to take a life estate, with the remainder interest passing to the descendant(s), or take a 50% tenant-in-common interest with the surviving descendant(s). If no surviving descendants exist, a surviving spouse would receive the entire homestead. Automobile: If the intestate decedent is survived by a spouse, the surviving spouse is entitled to receive up to two automobiles owned by the intestate decedent and becoming part of the intestate probate Energy estate. If no surviving spouse, any surviving children (but not other descendants) would be entitled to the automobile(s). Household furniture, furnishings, and appliances: Any of these WHERE ARE YOU? items of property in the intestate decedent’s usual place of abode, up to a maximum value of $20,000.00, pass and belong to the intestate decedent’s surviving spouse, or if none, to surviving children. Family Allowance: A surviving spouse and/or any surviving lineal heirs (which could include a parent) which an intestate decedent was supporting or obligated to support may be entitled, in addition to other intestate shares or entitlements, a combined maximum of $18,000.00 for their maintenance during the probate administration. The mass overdoses include 10 people at two homes in the Fort Lauderdale area over the weekend, as well as seven overdoses in Wilton Manors on Thursday, five of whom were cadets at West Point, according to a spokeswoman from the U.S. Military Academy. “For Tampa Bay, this is already the worst we’ve seen overdose deaths related to opioids and synthetic drugs by far,” said John Templeton, founder of Footprints Beachside Recovery in Treasure Island. “But on top of that, you have spring breakers flocking to our area for the warm weather, beaches and vibrant night life. Some of those on vacation may look to partake in illegal drug use, but you have no idea who you’re buying it from, what they’re mixing it with and what the potential consequences are. One tiny flake of fentanyl can kill you.” According to initial estimates from Project Opioid Tampa Bay, more than 1,200 people died of opioid- related deaths in Tampa Bay in 2020, a 36 percent increase compared to 2019. This average overdose rate in Tampa Bay is 9.75 percent higher than the state of Florida, and 50.5 percent higher than the nation. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 100 times stronger than morphine. It is often added to other illegal substances, including cocaine, heroin and sometimes marijuana. It is also often made into pills that closely resemble prescription opioids. With the rate of fentanyl-related overdose deaths hitting record highs, Templeton implores spring breakers in the Tampa Bay area to ask themselves one very important question: is it worth it? “Is it really worth losing your life?” asked Templeton. “Is smoking this substance or snorting that substance really worth making today your last day on earth? Think about that the next time a random person approaches you and your friends offering any illicit drugs.” According to Templeton, time is of critical importance in the event of an overdose. If you or your friends are experiencing any complications after ingesting illegal substances, Templeton advises to call 911 immediately. If you or a loved one is suffering from addiction and are looking for treatment in the Tampa Bay area, please contact Footprints Beachside Recovery Center by visiting www.FootprintsBeachside.com or calling 727.353.9484. Page 8 • FeatherSoundNews.com • April 2022 Why pocket pets are perfect for first-time pet owners By Camille Harkenrider Pets can be a great addition to any family. They provide companionship, relieve stress and teach kids about compassion and responsibility. While they are most common among households, cats and dogs aren’t the best fit for every family. Pocket pets, such as guinea pigs, can be great pets for families who are adopting for the first time. Due to their smaller size, guinea pigs are a perfect pet for smaller spaces like apartments or condos. They can also be more affordable. Most adoptable guinea pigs are available for a $25 adoption fee at SPCA Tampa Bay. If you are deciding whether a guinea pig is right for you, please consider that they are: Low maintenance. Guinea pigs require daily feedings of hay, fresh water and fresh produce. Apples, blueberries, grapes and guinea pig pellets are all suitable foods for a guinea pig’s diet. Their cages must be spot cleaned daily to remove soiled bedding, droppings and stale food, and completely cleaned with fresh bedding weekly. They should also be brushed regularly to keep their coats clean and untangled. Small in size. Guinea pigs’ small size is one of their best qualities. Most guinea pigs can weigh up to two pounds, which means they are great for families who live in an apartment or smaller home. They need a minimum of a four-square-foot cage, which should be kept indoors, out of direct sunlight, and away from drafts and extreme temperatures. Great for kids. Guinea pigs are great for elementary school children. They aren’t as fragile as hamsters or rabbits and are easy to handle and care for. Caring for guinea pigs can teach children to feed, clean and interact responsibly with pets. Playful. Guinea pigs enjoy playing in their cages. Owners should provide cardboard tubes, empty oatmeal containers or coffee cans with smoothed edges for hide-and- seek, or bricks or rocks for climbing. Chew toys or branches or twigs are also good toys for guinea pigs to wear down their teeth, which grow continuously. IT PAYS TO WORK Social. Guinea pigs are social animals, which means they enjoy playing with others. Young, M.D. Foundational Health Center WHAT IS THE CONNECTION? 727-545-4600 I play a lot of tennis and a common phrase I hear from a lot of them both young and old is they love the game www.YoungFoundationalHealthCenter.com but they can’t play as often as before because if they play more than 2 times a week their arthritis in the knees, elbows, and hips are so bad they are in pain for days. I am doing a YouTube on the thyroid and did you know that arthritis such as osteoarthritis John D Young, M.D. is caused by over using a joint and causing the joint to wear out or Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) which is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks its own joints very often it is a sign of hypothyroidism low functioning thyroid. It was in the early 1900s a Belgium doctor noted that people with RA very often had their RA complaints vanish when put on thyroid therapy. He discovered that thyroid therapy seemed to reverse or at least slow the destruction of bone, tendons, and muscles of the patient’s joints. In 1970 a British doctor of rheumatology had a number of patients complain of weight gain, fatigue, and cold hands and feet. He saw that thyroid administration alleviated most all of their symptoms including the joint pain in a few months. The same applied to osteoarthritis. You see in all the arthritis conditions there is a large amount of mucin in the tissue and blood vessels of these patients. Mucin is destructive to the areas in which it is found in the joints and treatment with thyroid medication reduces mucin. A doctor Swain in Boston discovered that many arthritis patients have a low basal body temperature. When treated most all of their arthritis symptoms leave. Energy was better and they have a better sense of wellbeing. It should be noted that their doctors used derived thyroid derived from pig thyroid which is 10-20 times stronger than artificial thyroid like Synthroid or Levothyroxine. If your doctor uses these he can follow up on the dosage adjusting needed by following the basal body temperature, which is the temperature of your body taken upon awakening without sitting up or moving. It needs to be an oral reading between 97.8 and 98.2. In my own practice one of the first signs of improvement in my patients when I do this they say my arthritis is either gone or much better. A quick note a number of people have told me they get sick or their condition worsens on thyroid. I do know that each thyroid medication may be different. Some are made from gluten other have a number of fillers in them such as Xanthan gum which they may be allergic to. Talk it over with your doctor as he or she will be more than happy to get you feeling better. John Young M.D. Ready to make your MOVE? Page 10 • FeatherSoundNews.com • April 2022 How to Manage Allergies and When to Get Tested If you’ve been dealing with allergies, you may be wondering where they’re coming from. Could it be your family pet, your favorite food or tree pollen? According to Dr. Nathan Keith Waldrep, assistant chief medical officer for BayCare Ambulatory Services, there are various indoor and outdoor allergens that can trigger your allergies, causing you to sneeze, wheeze and get a runny nose. That’s why Dr. Waldrep helps explain allergies and provide some tips and tricks that can help reduce exposure to your allergic triggers. Indoor Allergens While many know allergy or asthma can occur outdoors, Dr. Waldrep says many things inside your home such as mold, perfume, smoking, dust mites, cockroaches, rodents and even your family pet can cause serious allergy problems. Other things that cause allergies include carpet, soft furniture, stuffed toys, pillows and bedding, mattresses and indoor plants. These allergens can cause red, watery or itchy eyes, runny nose, congestion and asthma. However, there are some easy, day-to-day steps you can take to help control allergens in your home. “Clean your home surfaces regularly, remove wall-to-wall carpets, change air conditioner filters often, use air purifiers, wash your bedding once a week and vacuum your entire home at least twice a week using high-efficiency vacuums,” says Dr. Waldrep. “Maintaining these cleaning practices can help kill dust mites and prevent allergens from going back in the air and into your system.” If you have allergies, animal dander or skin cells coming from feathers or fur can cause symptoms. Pets such as dogs and HartleyChiropracticCenter.com cats release skin flakes and fur, causing you to constantly sneeze and have congestion and a runny nose. If you have a pet, Dr. Waldrep recommends doing a few things to control your allergy symptoms. “Keep your pets out of your bedroom, wash your pet often and keep its furniture and toys clean. Also, bathe and brush your pet weekly in warm water and soap. You should also consider wearing a mask when grooming your pet.” he said. ONE PURPOSE. Page 12 • FeatherSoundNews.com • April 2022 EarthTalk® E - The Environmental Magazine Coral Reefs Going Going Gone Thanks To Global Warming By Gabe Castro-Root Dear EarthTalk: How are the world’s coral reefs doing these days? I haven’t heard much about them lately despite all the recent talk about climate change’s ill effects. —Jo. S., Bowie, MD It’s going to get harder and harder to find Nemo and other clown fish as the world’s living coral reefs become more and more scarce. Coral reefs are being hit by climate change in just about every way possible. Wildfire, drought and other land-based climate disasters have captured global headlines, but coral reefs have been bleaching at record levels, and as such their future is uncertain. The science of climate change’s impact on coral reefs is simple. As humans pump greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere, the ocean acts as a carbon sink, absorbing carbon dioxide (CO₂) and dissolving it into acid. As a result, ocean acidity has increased by about 25 percent since the early 19th century, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). That acidity is incredibly harmful to coral reefs. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), ocean acidification “decreases growth rates and structural integrity” of coral skeletons, damaging their ability to support the diversity of life that makes up a reef ecosystem. One of the most immediate threats to coral is ocean temperature increases. Coral reefs exist only in narrow bands of water that stay within a moderate temperature range, not too hot or cold. Even moderate temperature increases can cause thermal stress that contributes to coral bleaching and infectious disease. The ocean has warmed 1.3 degrees (F) since the Industrial Revolution, meaning many reefs are stuck in dangerously hot water. The stress on reef creatures has been immense. When coral polyps— small, anemone-like animals that form the living base of reefs—get stressed, they expel the symbiotic algae that grows on them and provides them with nutrients. This is what’s called coral bleaching. With no algae to feed coral and give it its color, the abandoned coral turns white. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s dead, but with no nutrient supply its ability to grow and fight off diseases is significantly hampered. Warming water also causes stronger and bigger storms, which can destroy entire reef systems as they pass. Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas in 2019 and destroyed 30 percent of the islands’ coral reefs. In 2005, Hurricane Rita caused extensive damage to coral reefs in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary off the coast of Texas. Research suggests some storms may at times be beneficial for coral reefs by lowering water temperature. The influx of cool water can reduce heat stress on polyps, according to the Reef Resilience Network. But that temporary relief isn’t enough to make up for long-term warming. As surface temperatures increase, scientists hope that coral reefs might be able to slowly move themselves into cooler water—or that deep-water reefs already exist undiscovered. Researchers in Tahiti announced in February 2022 that they had found a nearly two-mile-long healthy coral reef in uncharacteristically deep water, leading to speculation that more deep-water reefs might exist in unexplored areas. Still, the rate of human-caused warming far outpaces the speed at which coral reefs can move. Family Dentistry Several start-ups and labs around the world are Adults and Cosmetic Dentistry Dental Implants developing small, human-made coral systems, which could eventually be deposited in the ocean and grow into full reefs. Page 13 • FeatherSoundNews.com • April 2022 Common Sense Caregiving - Gary Joseph LeBlanc When Feeding Tubes become a Caregiver’s Decision One of the toughest decisions a family may have to make as a loved one’s health deteriorates is whether to go the route of having a feeding tube inserted. Here are three varieties of tubes commonly used to keep a patient fed and nourished. Gary Joseph LeBlanc • The NG-tube is inserted through the nose and flows into the stomach. Director of Education • The NJ-tube is also inserted through the nose, going directly into the small intestine. Dementia Spotlight Foundation • The G-tube is inserted directly into the stomach and is considered more permanently than the others. (352) 345-6270 dementiaspotlightfoundation.org When the time came for me to make to make this decision for my father, I elected not to have the procedure performed. I knew at this www.dementiamentors.org point my dad had gone through more than enough, for at this point he was barely recognizable. But believe me, this was an arduous choice. If possible, it shouldn’t be rested on any one person’s shoulders. Holding back, one’s nourishment is such an unnatural act. As a rule, caregivers spend a great deal of time and energy attempting to hold back the inevitable tide of muscle and weight loss, which ultimately leads not only to not only physical weakness, but mental as well. If you should find that you are the lone unfortunate person to make this difficult decision, the pressure can become extremely intense. It will seem like that suddenly, everyone who wasn’t around to share in the caring for your loved one before now, abruptly have all sorts of strong opinions on the subject. Some will even question you on how the heck did it come to this point. It may make you want to shout, “Maybe if you would have been here to help the past few years, you wouldn’t have to ask this question.” Next comes the medical professionals, demanding you make this hard choosing in the next ten minutes. Hopefully throughout this short period, they are explaining all that is truly involved with inserting a feeding tube. The downside is a high risk of infection, nausea, diarrhea and, if there is dementia involved, they may become more confused resulting in the pulling out of their tubes themselves. On the other hand, this will keep them nourished and alive. Tough decisions need to be made. Therefore, I urge you and your loved one to sit down with an elder law attorney as early as possible after the diagnosis of any dementia related disease. An advance directive and do not resuscitate and more, need to be discussed and put into place. This will help remove some of the heavy guilt that falls on the person who must make this grave decision. By knowing you are following your loved one’s choices will be comforting at a very difficult time. By having these things in place, you can know concentrate on making sure your loved one remains as comfortable as possible during a difficult time. Page 15 • FeatherSoundNews.com • April 2022 How to Create the Perfect Outdoor Living (and Work) Room Spring is here, and it’s time for homeowners to ready yards and landscapes for backyarding. The pandemic thrust us into a new reality, and the backyard has a starring role. Yards and other managed landscapes became a safe haven. Backyarding became a way of life as lawns, gardens, patios and decks evolved into outdoor offices, classrooms, family gathering places, and the new ‘hot spots’ in our neighborhoods. According to a new poll commissioned by the TurfMutt Foundation and conducted online by The Harris Poll, the outdoor office trend is here to stay with many Americans using their yards as makeshift offices for their jobs. Nearly 2 in 5 Americans who have a yard (58%) say they have spent time doing work for their job in their yard during the pandemic. So how is the backyard set up to meet all of these needs? Create activity zones. Consider what needs to happen in the backyard and map activity areas. A shady table can double as a home office, study zone, art table, or dining spot. A hammock or outdoor sofa can suffice for napping, reading or studying. A patch of sturdy grass is perfect for sports, family games and play. A fire pit offers cozy chairs for star gazing and socializing, while a grill near a seating area promises delicious meals. A wall, fence, or pergola may hold an outdoor movie screen for nighttime viewing. An herb or vegetable garden helps kids learn about science and nutrition while reaping the satisfaction of growing food for the table. Factor functionality with purpose. Is there a quiet spot for conference calls? Or a shady spot that minimizes glare for online video meetings? Note where electrical outlets are and if an outdoor-rated extension cord will be needed to accommodate all of the electronics that may be used outside. Check wifi coverage and cell service in the yard and determine if there is enough comfortable seating. Spruce up existing landscaping. Assess the backyard and do some basic “clean up.” Fix bare patches in the grass. Use a leaf blower to clean out flower beds. Prune bushes and trees. Cut the grass to a healthy height. Add a fresh layer of mulch around your trees and in flower beds. Freshen up by weeding, planting flower beds, and filling pots with colorful flowers and verdant plants. Use plants and shrubs to hide unsightly items and control noise. Trees, shrubs and bushes offer cover from neighbors, deliver shade, camouflage unsightly pool equipment and air handlers, and tamp down noise. Planters with flowers between seating and eating areas on a patio add visual interest and privacy. Shrubs and tall plants are a terrific privacy-creator (and noise canceller for those conference calls). Put the right plant in the right place. Choosing the right plants for the climate zone and for your lifestyle will create a backyarding space that is attractive. It will also be easier to maintain, and support pollinators and wildlife. Consider watering and sunlight or shade needs for any plants added. A hardy grass variety is more likely to hold up to pets and kids. Save delicate flowering plants for patio containers, and be sure to check out the ASPCA list of toxic plants to keep pets safe. Invite the outdoors in. Blending interior and outdoor living spaces helps the backyard feel like an extension of the home. Open blinds and curtains to the yard. Use complementary indoor and outdoor décor in similar colors, materials and styles to create a cohesive space. This enables everyone to transition seamlessly from indoor life to outdoor living. For more information and tips about living landscapes visit www.TurfMutt.com. Proudly Serving Bardmoor • The Bayou Club • Carillon • Feather Sound • Seminole Lake Country Club
