Material Lab Prize 2021
The Material Lab Prize is a $1,000 grant awarded annually by the Material Lab at Pratt Institute’s
School of Design to a student designer whose work uses salvaged material, repurposed waste, or
found objects in a creative way. The Prize seeks to celebrate and exhibit work that re-envisions the
design process and considers waste streams as a springboard for new design thinking.
In collaboration with departments across Pratt, including Math and Science, and The Center for
Sustainability, the Material Lab Prize challenges designers at Pratt to incorporate waste to create a
new material, design process, or project. We invite students from any department to submit work.
Submissions may include, but are not limited to apparel, architectural models, furnishings, household
goods, or speculative projects.
Submissions at any scale will be considered, but students are encouraged to consider opportunities to
scale up or mass produce their submission in the future.
Submissions will be reviewed by a panel of design professionals and the review process will culminate
in an exhibition of submitted work.

PRESS
““…Masters of Industrial Design candidate Sophia Yimeng Sun was given the top accolade and
a $1,000 prize for her Cocoon lamp. The luminaire features a pleated, helical lampshade derived
from single use bonded HDPE plastic grocery bags. With her pared-back prototype, the up-and-
coming designer demonstrates how one of the worst types of waste could easily be reused in
various home furnishing applications. The lamp illuminates like one of Isamu Noguchi’s Akari
sculptures..”
“The new material Newspaperwood, designed by Industrial Design graduate Asad Jawed Ahmed,
received second place in the awards. It is a raw material made of newspapers, resulting in a
structure and visuals similar to wood.”
“This year’s grand prize winner was awarded to Sophia Yimeng Sun (MID ’21) and her
project “Cocoon.” Sun used HDPE plastic bags to create pleated lampshades.”
“The prize, which includes a $1,000 grant to grand prize winner Sophia Yimeng Sun (MID ’21),
draws attention to the importance of a material exploration, particularly when it comes to reusing
material found in waste streams.”
