Three roads pass through the old town - the “Lower Street” (Donja Ulica) with cafes and bars, the “Central Street” (Srednja Ulica) with boutiques, souvenir shops and ice cream parlours, and the “Upper Street” (Gornja Ulica), which leads to the churches with their bell towers. Day 3: RAB - DUGI OTOK, MONDAY We continue sailing south; today’s destination is Sali, the main town on the island of Dugi Otok. Dugi Otok, which means “Long Island”, is named after its shape - it is 45 km long and only a few hundred metres wide. The majority of the island’s residents live and work in Zadar. Therefore, outside of the main tourist season it is very quiet around the island. However, you can expect a typical Mediterranean bustle at weekends, when “city families” return to their hometowns. Before entering the harbour of Sali, we will anchor in one of the many coves for a refreshing swim. 20
Day 4: DUGI OTOK - NP KORNATI - ZADAR ISLAND, TUESDAY Perhaps the highlight of our trip! According to the Irish author George Bernard Shaw (who in 1925 received the Nobel Prize for Literature), “On the last day of creation, God crowned his work, and thus created, out of tears, stars and breath, the Kornati Islands”. The beautiful scenery, countless small and large islands (according to local folklore “an island for every day of the year”), and the beautiful sea - all this makes the Kornati Islands a unique paradise. It is the largest and most dense archipelago in the Adriatic Sea - it comprises 147 islands, islets and reefs with a total area of 69 square kilometres, spread over an area of 230 square kilometres. They cover an area of 35 km in length and 13 km in width between the islands of Dugi Otok in the north-west, Žirje in the south-east, and Pašman, Vrgada and Murter in the north and north-east. From Sali we will head towards “Proversa”, a narrow passage between the islands of Dugi Otok and Kornati, which is the entrance to the unique National Park. Passing countless, mostly uninhabited islets, we will reach the island of Mana, which on one side gently slopes into the sea, while on the other side it is marked by high cliffs. The ruins at the highest point of the island are not historically significant but are leftover sets from the movie “Raubfischer in Hellas” (“Pirates in Hellas”, starring Maria Schell), filmed here in the late 1950s! In the afternoon, we will sail north and anchor in one of the fishing villages of the Zadar archipelago - Dragove, Zverinac, 1st, or Molat. Day 5: ZADAR ISLAND - MALI LOŠINJ, WEDNESDAY We head toward the island of Lošinj, which is not only known for its 300 cloudless or almost cloudless days per year, but also for being covered by dense pine forests. With a bit of luck, we might even spot dolphins playing in the sea; in the waters around the island of Lošinj, there are more than 160 registered dolphins of the “Adriatic Dolphin Project”. After a swimming break, we will reach the town of Mali Lošinj, where we will stay overnight. Day 6: MALI LOŠINJ - CRES, THURSDAY Today we will sail to the neighbouring island of Cres, which is connected to Lošinj by a suspension bridge in Osor. The striking features of the island are its endless olive groves and innumerable flocks of sheep. Needless to say, roast lamb is one of the specialties of the island of Cres. After a much needed swimming break, we will head toward the picturesque town of Cres, where we will stay for the night. Day 7: CRES - RIJEKA, FRIDAY Time to say goodbye to the Croatian islands: from Cres we will cruise along its eastern coastline to Rijeka - not without taking one last dip in the sea, though. We will spend the night in the port city of Rijeka. Day 8: RIJEKA, SATURDAY We disembark after breakfast, at about 9 am. We will spend the night in Brela, Baška Voda or Makarska. For guests arriving later - transfer to the Makarska Riviera and boarding in the evening. Day 2: MAKARSKA RIVIERA - MLJET, SUNDAY Passing the islands of Brač and Hvar, we head towards the peninsula of Pelješac, famous for its excellent red wine. After a swim in one of the coves of Pelješac, we head for the bay of Pomena, on the island of Mljet. Part of the island is protected as National Park - two saltwater lakes (in the larger of the two lakes you will find a small island with a former monastery) are connected to the sea by a narrow channel. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the National Park (admission, including the boat ride to the monastery is about 15 EUR and is payable on-site). We recommend a swim in the saltwater lakes, where the temperature is always around 2°C warmer than the temperature of the sea. We will spend the night in Pomena. Day 3: MLJET - DUBROVNIK, MONDAY We leave the island of Mljet and continue our journey south. After a swimming break at the Elafiti Islands, we will enter the port of Dubrovnik at around 4:00 pm (walking to the old town takes 30 minutes, or a bus takes you there in a few minutes - they depart every 15 minutes from right next to where we dock, the fare is 10 HRK and the last return is at about 2 am). You have the rest of the day to discover and enjoy this unique town, which resembles an open-air museum. Stroll down the famous Stradun Street, take a walk along the massive city walls and visit the many sights. 22
Day 4: DUBROVNIK - ŠIPAN, TUESDAY Dubrovnik is also called the “Pearl of the Adriatic” and in the Middle Ages the city was among the most important economic and cultural centres of the Mediterranean. Today, the Old City has many attractions waiting to be explored, and since we set sail at 12 pm you will have plenty of time in the morning to experience the magic of the Old Town. We stay overnight in the small town of Slano, a picturesque fishing village north of Dubrovnik. It lies in a deep bay, which in earlier times was used as a harbour. Before anchoring in Slano, we will stop at the Elafiti Islands, where we will take a refreshing swim in one of their many bays. Alternatively, we stay overnight in a fishing village on the island of Šipan. Day 5: ŠIPAN - KORČULA, WEDNESDAY We continue north and head for the island of Korčula. It has one of the most beautiful old towns in Dalmatia and because of its fortress-like appearance it is often called “Little Dubrovnik”. Long time ago, the island was also called “Black Island”, because of its vast pine forests. We will spend the night in the birthplace of the famous sailor and explorer Marco Polo. Day 6: KORČULA - HVAR, THURSDAY From Korčula we set sail towards Hvar - the island that is well-known for its mild climate and vast lavender fields. The island’s main town and port, Hvar Town, lies at the foot of a fortress, which offers a fantastic view of the shore and of the island group of “Pakleni otoci”. Due to numerous ships and yachts, the small harbour of Hvar can get very crowded and therefore the captain may decide to moor in a nearby cove, instead of spending the night in the town of Hvar. Day 7: HVAR - ŠOLTA - TROGIR, FRIDAY We pass the island of Brač and after a swimming break in a bay on the island of Šolta, we will say farewell to the Dalmatian islands and return to the starting point of our journey, Trogir, with its beautiful UNESCO-protected Old Town. Enjoy the experience of walking through its winding streets in the afternoon or evening, and discover its walls, towers, churches, frescoes and vaults or just take a peek into old gardens.
