I suppose we can now officially declare that Spring has sprung and the Winter
nis behind us. We are all looking forward to a fantastic Summer.
Who has wondered where the name Sages came from? Chatting to Eurica
Gowens, the widow of the founder of Sages, Jimmy Gowans, she clarified it
when we played at Bryanston last month.
She and Jimmy was on a visit to the UK sometime in the Seventies when they met up with
a group of senior Americans who was part of something similar as Sages. Jimmy thought it
was a wonderful idea to start a similar group in South Africa for senior golfers who wanted
to meet other players and play different courses. In Erica’s words: "The idea of SAGES
was to meet old friends make new friends and enjoy one another in camaraderie. Many of
you can attest to this. We trust that you will appreciate each other and the camaraderie
whilst we are blessed to play our game."
That done, the search for a unique name started.
Jimmy did extensive research and consulted a variety of dictionaries etc. and eventually
came up with the SAGES. It is an acronym for South African Golf Ambassadors Seniors. A
sage is also a wise old man.
So there you have it, all you wise old men.

Teeing Off
            First Timers
We are pleased to welcome no less than five new members this month.
Jock Wellington; Michael Smith; Gary Geddes; Cobus Bester and
             Jack (Kobus) Venter.
We trust that you are going to enjoy the golf and friendship offered by Jimmy Gowens
Sages.
Our membership is growing very nicely. We have topped the 60 mark and it is looking a lot
better than the mid-twenties about three years ago.

We are pleased to report that Eurica is so much better that she will be playing

We have not received any other bad news this month, but please let us know if
you are aware of any members not being well. It seems that we have been
spared from Covid so far. We trust all of us have received at least the first jab.
