HEAD COACH - HARRY KEWELL “Three-and-a-half weeks have passed since we were last in action at home and there’s a real eagerness within the squad as we return to Boundary Park under the lights tonight.” After an enforced break due to two postponements at the start of the month, this evening’s game is the third in a sequence of 12 fixtures we are due to play in a tight schedule before the end of March. We have worked hard to ensure the squad is ready for an important period in the season and, in keeping with much of our campaign so far, there has been no shortage of drama over the past week as we begin this busy run. It is a measure of our performances at both Forest Green Rovers and Tranmere Rovers that we came away knowing we deserved more against two of the strongest sides in the league. Having taken an early lead at Prenton Park on Saturday before falling behind, the players showed great perseverance to battle back and claim a point with ten men. The game will rightly be remembered for the extraordinary goal scored by Dylan Bahamboula to earn us the draw late on in the match. We all know Dylan is an exceptional talent and that moment of brilliance came as no surprise to those of us who have the pleasure of seeing his ability at close quarters both in training and in games. To be able to execute the shot as he did takes a special level of vision and skill, and I am sure you all enjoyed celebrating it at home, just as we did at the stadium. After conceding four goals at Forest Green earlier in the week, I was also pleased with the discipline we showed overall. We limited Tranmere to very little in front of goal but we still could have been shrewder with the ball and that will be key if we are to turn draws such as this into wins. With four goals in six games, Davis Keillor-Dunn is another player who we have seen excel in recent weeks. Davis has worked incredibly hard on his game over the course of the season, taking on board the advice and ideas we have given him as a coaching staff, and I am delighted that he is now getting his reward. Tonight we welcome a Barrow team who underwent a managerial change again at the weekend and for that reason we know their players will arrive here with a point to prove. Making the step-up into the EFL is always a big challenge for a newly-promoted side and while things have not gone their way of late, we saw ourselves in the reverse fixture at Holker Street that Barrow are a team not to be underestimated. With plenty of points up for grabs over the coming weeks, for us it is about looking to move up the league table as quickly as possible. The win in our last home game against Salford City saw us register back-to-back victories at Boundary Park for the first time this season and we know that getting results here will be crucial in shaping the remainder of our campaign. Everyone hopes that it won’t be too much longer before we can see you again at games such as this but the support you continue to provide means a lot to us all. We are determined to finish the season well and with no shortage of matches coming up over the next few weeks, we will be doing all we can to keep you entertained as you cheer us on from home. FRANKIE HITS ‘EM FOR SIX Latics legend Andy Ritchie recalls the night when Frankie Bunn scored six goals against Scarborough in the Littlewoods Cup. "I've always told Frankie (Bunn) that I scored the best goal that night and he's got a collage of the pictures of his six goals which is brilliant for him, and his record has never been beaten. In every single picture he's putting the ball into the net and I'm just at the side of him, so he was the greedy beggar that night! If he passed a few times, then maybe I could've had a hat-trick as well. "His last goal, the volley at the end, was a fantastic goal because it came down and he had to really concentrate for that one. It couldn't have happened to a nicer fella and he's a great friend of mine. Frankie was the best player I've ever played upfront with by no shadow of doubt." BOUNDARY BULLETIN - 13
