A Personal Experience
For anyone looking for guaranteed
tropical sunshine, miles of unspoiled
white-sand beaches and a low-key, laid-back family
experience, Cape Verde is a fantastic option; like
discovering the missing link between the Canaries and
the Caribbean... “No stress”, we were told several times,
is the Cape Verde motto, and the package offered by
our hotel delivered on that promise. We’d never been on
an all-inclusive family holiday before, but after a week,
we were converts... In Cape Verde, we got a proper,
relaxing break, with all the convenience and ease of a
package holiday, but without any of the crowds.

should be noted that TACV (Cabo Verde Airlines), who provide the island’s

The smaller islands are more difficult to visit due to infrequent flights but our
team will be happy to advise what itineraries are possible. There is a regular

With its mixture of sun, excellent beaches and geographical, cultural and
historical interest, the Cape Verde islands are hard to beat as an all round
holiday destination.
Tourism - the facts
It is vital to remember that tourism is still very much in its infancy in Cape
Verde and health and safety as well as service levels in hotels and restaurants
do not always compare favourably to hotels in more established destinations.
There is poverty and you may encounter locals trying to sell you paintings
and handicrafts. Despite being off-putting at times, the sellers are quite
harmless and are very few and far between. There is ongoing development
on the islands, which can range from single villas to huge complexes and
during your visit you are likely to see and hear some building work. If there
is building work taking place either in, or next to your chosen hotel, we will
advise you if we feel it will affect your holiday.
A bit of background
Given the position of the Cape Verde islands – 500km from the coast
of West Africa – it’s not surprising that they remained uninhabited until
Portuguese traders populated them in the 15th century. The islands
became an outpost of the Portuguese empire and a stop on trading and
slaving routes across the Atlantic, including visits by Sir Francis Drake in the
1580s. As such the islands do have a unique culture, part West African, part
Portuguese with a splash of Brazilian, and the people are fiercely proud of
their heritage – both on a national and individual island level.

Getting around Cape Verde
Taxis are readily available in the larger towns and as a guide, a 2 to 3 mile
journey would be approximately €3. The most inexpensive way of getting
around are the ’aluguers’ that are easily identified and drive around towns,
often full of passengers and packages. You simply shout when you want to
get off! Car hire is available but roads are poor and quite bumpy outside the

Take a quick glance at the huge golden sweep of the beach at Santa Maria and you’ll be under no illusion as to why the
island of Sal has become famous for its beach holidays; and if you’re looking to switch off totally and spend some time
soaking up the sun, we might just have the perfect place for you...
Viewed from the plane window after a few hours of the slatey blue of the
Atlantic Ocean, the island of Sal is quite a prospect. The interior of the island
is of reddish rock, and for the most part is almost completely flat and barren
whilst the southern coast holds the renowned golden beaches. To the
north, the islands capital, Espargos is home to most of the island’s residents
and is worth visiting if you wish to see the workings of an authentic
Cape Verdean town.
Island of Sal
Famous for its year-round beach holidays
The resort of Santa Maria is where you’ll find most of the hotels, plus a
continually growing number of lively bars and restaurants offering a variety
of local and international dishes. The highlight is of course the wonderfully
fresh seafood, which you can see being brought into the town’s dock every
day. Santa Maria is only 20 minutes or so from the airport, so you can be
by the pool or on the beach quickly after touching down. The beach is
exceptional and does seem to roll on forever therefore it’s not too difficult
to find a nice quiet spot to relax in.
Many visitors come to Sal for the watersports and it’s hardly surprising. Sal’s
long sandy beaches and turquoise waters make a wonderful playground for
windsurfing, kite surfing and surfing. The wind can sometimes be very strong
and Sal is considered to be amongst the world’s top five windsurfing locations.
Diving and fishing are also available and there are plenty of places to hire
equipment and organise trips, which can be arranged by our resort team.
There is currently development work happening across Sal including parts
of Santa Maria. However, we have found it does not detract from the main
reason people go to Santa Maria – the sun and the glorious sandy beach.

Mr Kilvert, Shropshire
Morabeza is a local word meaning ‘hospitality’ - a term which the hotel more
than lives up to. It’s the longest established hotel on Sal, and was originally the
home of a Belgian family, the Vynckiers, whose legacy has been preserved by the
recent unveiling of a sculpture and the naming of a street adjoining the hotel. The
fact that it’s now run by their granddaughter (one Sophie Marcellesi) adds a real
sense of continuity and provides a strong family atmosphere. It has developed
into a very attractive and much sought after hotel, particularly with the recent
addition of an executive block housing a second pool area with superb rooms
and suites, which have proved extremely popular with our guests.
The grounds of the hotel are extensive with a broad range of superbly furnished
room types and with excellent facilities at every turn: the main pool area with
a bar, tennis courts and mini-golf, a well-stocked library and games room,
including two snooker tables and table tennis as well as a gym. All this and yet
the hotel never feels overly busy, it absorbs everything into its air of peace and
calm. There is also the superb Beach Club, which is right on the beach and is
the perfect spot for lunch, or a refreshing drink.
A popular way to explore the resort’s excellent restaurants and themed evening
meals is choosing the bon appetit dining option. With this, you get dinner at the
hotel in the newly refurbished Les Palmiers restaurant on the first and last night
of your stay and the Saturday barbecue buffet, leaving you free to venture out
into Santa Maria to try the local bars and restaurants on the other evenings.
The Morabeza places a high premium on taste,

food, but in its decor, its grounds and its stunning

Island of Sal
Couples - Central Location - Small & Friendly
R ight in the heart of Santa Maria, enjoying a privileged location
and its own sandy beach, Odjo d’Agua is a small, family run
hotel with an authentic Cape Verdean feel.
The hotel has a charming interior with many personal touches as well as
antiques and photographs from the owner’s history. The warmth of the greeting
adds to this family atmosphere as well as guests receiving a personal guided tour
of the hotel. The rooms are simple but comfortable and are situated on two
floors, with upgrade options available including sea views and suites.
From the swimming pool, the views along the shore are fabulous, although
nothing can match the outlook from the O Farolin restaurant. Perched on a sea
wall promontory, the restaurant comes alive at night with gentle live music and
serves some of the finest freshly caught seafood anywhere on Sal. A bon appetit
dining option is available at a supplement.
To the side of the hotel, there is a more sheltered sandy cove, ideal for
sunbathing or having a quick dip. For those who wish to venture out in the
evening, the Odjo d’Agua is only a short stroll from the resort centre of Santa

There is a tendency to resort to over-used adjectives when describing Boa Vista – tranquil, beautiful and unique. Yet there
is something of all of those things in this beguiling little island. From the emerging dunes and towering date palms, to the
blanketed sands and glistening waters, the beaches will truly take your breath away.
Whilst the interior of the island is something of a lunar-like moonscape sculpted
by the winds over the years, the outer edges are dominated by sweeping
golden sand and turquoise sea. The Praia des Chaves beach, upon which
two of our hotels stand, is a stunning prospect, hundreds of metres wide and
stacked up at one end with massive dunes. Santa Monica, in the south of the
island, is something else again: its 15kms of sand stretch away from you in either
direction. These deserted white beaches are a true haven for wildlife, with
Ervatao beach, one of the world’s key nesting sites for loggerhead turtles.
Island of Boa Vista
The perfect place to truly escape and relax
Boa Vista’s main town and population centre is Sal Rei, a sleepy little port in
the north west of the island. It is starting to gather a small selection of bars and
restaurants, but like a microcosm of the island, activity here tends to be fairly
low key. This is translated to the hotels, which although having varying levels of
facilities, daytime activities and night time entertainment, above all else tend to
be places to relax and unwind. What the hotels all share however, is privileged
access to the real allure of Boa Vista – the beaches.
As well as being a sunbathing heaven, activities are aplenty on Boa Vista. Due to
the constant breeze, the island is the perfect venue for watersports of all types
- from surfing, wind-surfing and kite-surfing, to deep fishing and diving. Or for
those wanting to stay on land, try buzzing up and down the beaches or around
the sand dunes on a quad bike.

T he Marine Club is a quiet, attractive hotel set on a hillside
overlooking the bay of Praia de Cruz.
This hotel offers good facilities, including a large pool area, a massage suite,
a daily activity programme, and evening entertainment consisting of local
or international music. The grounds are very well kept, with flowering
bougainvillea and tropical plants lining the narrow cobbled lanes and pathways
leading down to the bay.
All of the rooms are comfortable, simply furnished and scattered on the small
hillside (making this hotel unsuitable for the less mobile) and you also have the
upgrade option of a sea facing villa with a spacious terrace.
Marine Club benefits from wonderful views across the bay throughout the
hotel, which can perhaps best be enjoyed from the restaurant and bar. The
wooden pier that stretches out over the crystal clear water provides the perfect
place to sit and relax or enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif. Meals are buffet style and are
taken in the main restaurant or at the snack bar by the pool.
As well as half board, there is a full board and soft drinks board basis available at
a supplement, including breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks along with unlimited
soft drinks and water. For those who wish to venture out of an evening, you
are also only a short taxi ride away from the island’s capital Sal Rei, with its quiet
squares and ever growing number of restaurants and bars.

Island of Boa Vista
Couples - Tranquil - Small & Intimate
T he Parque das Dunas is a typical Cape Verdean hotel, which
sits directly on the extraordinary sweep of Praia des Chaves
beach and is truly a quiet retreat – it might just be the perfect
place to relax and unwind.
When we say ‘sits directly on Praia des Chaves’ we’re not exaggerating!
Many of the rooms open out onto the beach itself, and the main body of the
hotel is just a few steps from this quintessential Cape Verdean beach. We’re not
overstating the peace and calm at Parque das Dunas either: everything is low
key on this already quiet island.
The rooms here are simply furnished bungalows, situated within rows either
side of the pool and adjacent to the beach. The central pool area is flanked by
sun loungers, with shaded areas provided by palm trees. The bar and restaurant
area is an informal affair, with seating inside and out where you can enjoy a
refreshing beverage and typical Cape Verdean cuisine or seafood from the
menu.
The island’s small capital Sal Rei is only a 15-minute taxi or shuttle ride away,
and is a pleasant town to stroll around, exploring the squares and quayside
or sampling the small selection of shops, restaurants and bars. Alternatively,
venture further afield, to the dramatic Boa Vistan coastline on one of the many
excursions on offer on the island.

Although the focus of our accommodation tends to be on Sal and Boa Vista, we do feature hotels on the islands of São
Vicente, Santiago, Santo Antão and Fogo for the more scenically spectacular side of the Cape Verde islands. For extensive
information on these islands, please visit the Cape Verde Experience website.
São Vicente
São Vicente is rightly regarded as one of the cultural centres of the islands. In the
capital, Mindelo, you’ll find a choice of bars, restaurants, fine old-style colonial
architecture and cobbled streets. You’re likely to hear the delicate melancholy
of the traditional mornas as sung by the island’s most famous daughter, the late
Cesaria Evoria, plus the more frantic funana. Yet, culture is not the only thing on
offer in São Vicente. Geographically, the island offers a vast array of landscapes
- from the dramatic mountainous interior, the dried river bed of Ribeira Julião
with its lush plantations and typical Cape Verdean villages, to the spectacular
coastline around the Baia das Gatas.
Santo Antão
Santo Antão is the second largest island in the archipelago and has a beautiful
lush, green landscape on its north side. There are precipitous peaks, jaw-

dropping ravines and dwellings clinging to the side of mountains with locals
tending their crops in terraced areas that look completely inaccessible. The
scenic drive across the mountains from Porto Novo to Ribeira Grande in the
So much more to explore
north east of the island is well worth the trip!
Santiago
Santiago is the largest and most developed island in the archipelago with a rich
history, dramatic mountainous scenery and lively nightlife. We would recommend
a day trip to the old capital of Cidade Velha (a UNESCO world heritage site) and
Forte Real de São Filipe, the main slave trading point between Europe, Africa
and America. Of an evening, Praia, the island’s modern capital, comes alive
with music, which can be heard in most bars and restaurants. The spectacular
hinterland is superb for walking – most of which consist of finding a point in the
centre of the island and following a ribeira or stream down to the coast.
Fogo
One of the absolute highlights of any visit to Cape Verde has to be a trip to the
active volcanic crater on Fogo – still warm from its last eruption in 1995. You
can walk around in the craters, and see evidence of the spectacularly fertile
land at its heart, where the islanders grow coffee beans and the grapes which
produce the famous Fogo wine. São Filipe, the capital of Fogo, is a pretty town
and the third largest in Cape Verde. The buildings are of Portuguese design in
pastel colours with terracotta roofs. Pretty squares, cobbled streets and plenty
of trees and flowering plant pots add to the vibrant colours on display.

Island of São Vicente
Couples - Tranquil - Island Hopping
T he Foya Branca is a versatile resort-style hotel, combining an
excellent location next to the beach and with some superb
facilities. A very quiet hotel which was perfect. Fantastic
Situated in beautifully kept gardens with palm trees and flowering bougainvillea staff who were all very friendly and helpful. The

setting with an impressive view. The extensive grounds include two large Mr Payne, Edinburgh
swimming pools, a children’s pool and play area, plus a gym, tennis courts,
pétanque and even a giant chessboard. Fishing, diving and horse-riding can also
all be arranged at the hotel during your stay (payable locally).
Guest rooms in the newer block are light and airy with good furnishings
throughout and are located over two floors with either a terrace or balcony.
We also highly recommend upgrading to a sea view room.
There is a choice of two bars plus a stylish evening restaurant and a lunch time
snack bar in which to dine. The hotel’s main restaurant offers à la carte and
set table d’hôte menus with a good choice of local and international cuisine,
including the wonderfully fresh ‘catch of the day’ fish option. Although waiter
service in general can be slow in Cape Verde, in this particular restaurant it is
well worth the wait. If you are planning to head out to sample the nightlife in the
town of Mindelo, only a 10-minute drive away, after dinner, our tip is to order
your food immediately on arrival at the restaurant prior to ordering your drinks.
This hotel is the perfect choice for the more adventurous of our customers
looking for activities and the opportunity to explore around the island of
São Vicente, making full use of the hotel’s frequent courtesy shuttle bus into
Mindelo, or taking the short stroll along the beach to the small nearby fishing
village to watch the daily catch being gathered in. Foya Branca is also secluded
enough to offer a relaxing retreat by the sea if you wish, and is a favourite hotel
with our clients for twin and multi-centre holidays around the islands.

Island of São Vicente
Couples - Central Location - Island Hopping
T he Porto Grande is a comfortable hotel overlooking the
central square right at the heart of Mindelo, the cultural
capital of São Vicente and the second largest city in the
archipelago. They say if you want to understand Cape Verdean
music, you need to stay in Mindelo...
The guest rooms are simple but comfortable and are situated on two floors,
either overlooking the town square to the front of the hotel or the pool to the
rear. Live music is played in the lobby bar some evenings, which attracts both
locals and holidaymakers, and the outside seating area overlooking the square
is a lovely spot to enjoy a drink. The hotel restaurant offers excellent value for
money serving a mix of international and local traditional food with a definite
Portuguese bias.
During the day you can relax around the hotel swimming pool, use the facilities
including a small gym, or take an easy 15-minute stroll to Laginha, a lovely urban
beach, popular with locals, where bathing is possible, tides permitting.
Being conveniently located in the heart of the city, you can also take the
opportunity to explore Mindelo’s plentiful shops, markets, restaurants and
layers of fascinating history, openly displayed in the colourful buildings of varying
architectural styles.
Please note there is no lift at this hotel.
