COMBERTON CONTACT JULY/AUGUST 2021 - Comberton Village Website
From the Editor
We are still inching towards normality with 19 July now being the
tantalising date when many restrictions might come to an end. Let us
hope that our local organisations can resume their activities and tap into
the pent up demand for social interaction.

I’m not normally someone to moan, but again in this edition we have a
resident complaining about dog fouling. As with most anti-social
behaviour, the majority behave responsibly and we are let down by the
few people who do not; please clean up after your dog!

One of the consequences of lockdown is that many of us have become
more dependent on a fast and reliable internet connection, whether for
working from home or entertainment. High-speed fibre connectivity is
coming to the village provided there is enough interest, please see the
County Broadband advertisement on the back cover.

Compilers note: Reference " 2016 Premiership Winners " Whilst my
interpretation of this was "who in 2016 was declared Premiership Winners" with
the answer being Leicester, some of you gave the answer Chelsea who were
declared champions in 2017. Even the web was confused by the clue as
included in Contact and I would normally have accepted both answers as
correct except for one small detail, there is to my knowledge no horse racing
track in Chelsea. Ray Skawses.

Comberton WI
Hurrah. Hopefully on Tuesday evening July 13th Comberton WI will be
holding its first full meeting for over a year.

However things have not been entirely abandoned as the National
Federation has provided many and varied Zoom courses from Denman
College and our Cambridge Federation has had an interesting list of
things offered to members on Zoom also, including some drama which
proved to be very entertaining.

Last Summer we held a few afternoon tea meetings in members
gardens , with restricted numbers, and recently we have been able to
do this again which has proved very popular.

In the meantime members have been made aware of all happenings
and events by email or telephone and Ecards have been sent to mark
birthdays.

We all look forward to our first meeting which will be a celebration with
nibbles and drinks at our usual venue the Village Hall.

Later in the year we will issue our coming programme and we hope that
some of you who read it might want to give the WI a visit. If you do so
you will be given a warm welcome by our friendly members.

Here's hoping for a full year of activities next year.

Comberton Friendship Club
Comberton Friendship Club is resuming meetings on Thursday, July 8th
(Covid permitting!!) at 2.30pm in the Village Hall. There will be no
organised speaker, just a chance to get back together again after such
a long time. We can then plan the rest of the years meetings.

We would love to see some new members -- age is immaterial!! -- just
be retired and looking for something different to do!!!

Please get in touch with me for more details.

Greetings Neighbours,

The school council (pupil body) and staff team have been busy planning
the upgrade of our habitat garden to make it a reflective calm place for
all children to enjoy. Letters have been sent to various companies. We
have been lucky to have heard back from a few to offer their support in
providing materials for the garden. The team have sketched an outline
plan of the garden, incorporating as many ideas as possible from the
children and we are expecting a visit from a representative from The
Wildlife Trust who will visit and give advice. Should you wish to donate
money towards the habitat garden, please do contact the school office
who will be delighted to give you further information. All donations will
go directly to this project.

The children enjoyed designing stamps for the Royal Mail stamp design
competition for COVID heroes and we were really pleased at the effort
and thought that went into them. We await to hear if any entries make it
as a Royal Mail stamp design finalist.

The bus between Toft and the Meridian has been running since half
term and the trial has been working well. We hope to continue the bus
in September.

We welcomed our new parents of children starting at Meridian in EYFS
in September for a socially distanced information evening and we have
organised a couple of stay and play events for the children and their
parents to attend in July to spend some time at the school after the
school day has ended.

Our Year 5 and 6 children have had a wonderful week at Hilltop
Residential Centre in Norfolk with new challenges set and achieved.
Activities that the children participated in include swimming, team
games, archery, high ropes, beach time, coastal walks and a tree top
trail. The children had the whole site to themselves.

We signed up for the NSPCC ‘Speak Out, Stay Safe’ online
safeguarding programme. All classes watched a special assembly and
we will also be delivering some activities around this theme.

We are holding an International Craft day at school to fundraise for
our link school in The Gambia for the last few days of the summer
 term.

We are pleased that our Year 4 and 5 children will be visiting
Stibbington - the Centre has been very busy since reopening to
schools and we were lucky to be able to book this trip, which will
enrich our World War II topic.

Due to the extended restrictions, we have had to re-look at our plans
around sports day spectators and our performances.

We are looking forward to our STEM week in July.

We say a large farewell to our current Year 6 cohort. They will have a
number of leaver events – a performance, an enterprise day,
organised swimming sessions and a special leaver’s assembly. We
wish them all the very, very best for their journey to secondary school.

May I take this opportunity again to thank again all the staff, children,
families and governors for all their hard work. As always, thank you
for your support and keep well.

 Kind regards,

 Mrs C. Etchie

Dog Fouling
I am sorry to have to say that there has been quite a lot of dog fouling in
Westlands. There has been a lot on my piece of land which is on the
corner near where a bungalow has been extended. When my gardener
went to cut the grass he had to clear several lots before he could start.
All the land behind the garages for nos 1 -- 7 Westlands is privately
owned by myself and the owners of no 7 and I would be very grateful if
dog owners would clear up after their pets - most people do!!

Also, about the same piece of land, I had a water butt and two green
boxes there which I was about to bring into my garden -- they have now
disappeared!!!

Thank you Sue Allin

you the opportunity to display your knowledge of our great English

of 5 points for its five A’s.
CHARGOGGAGOGGMANCHAUGAGOGGCHAUBUNAGUNGAMOGG
with it’s fifteen G’s is regrettably not acceptable due to it being absent in
the OED, Chambers and Collins !!! Highest points wins.

At the time of time of writing, we are still awaiting a further national
announcement on the final steps of the roadmap out of lockdown. By
the time you read this, we are hoping that we will be much closer to
being able to offer our normal service at Comberton Library, but please
do keep checking the website and the Libraries social media platforms
for the latest news. I am pleased to confirm, however, that, in the
interim, we are now open for an additional afternoon each week, Friday
from 2.00 – 5.00 pm. We hope that this additional session will make it
easier for our customers to visit the library.

The Summer Reading Challenge for children, Wild World Heroes, in
partnership with the Reading Agency begins this month and will run in
the library throughout the summer holidays. The Reading Agency has
teamed up with the WWF for this special nature-themed Challenge and
it promises to be another brilliant challenge, a chance for the children to
read some amazing books, collect some awesome stickers and learn
more about how they can look after the planet! Children will be able to
join-up to take part from Saturday 10th July. Further information is
available in the library, and online, Cambridgeshire Libraries Facebook
Family page @CambslibFamilies. We are very excited to be able to
offer the Challenge in the library again this year and look forward to
seeing our younger customers and their families over the summer.

We have an amazing opportunity available for a Rhymetime
volunteer at Comberton Library. Whatever your skills and
experience, if you would enjoy spending time with our very
youngest children and their families/carers, and have some time
available every other week in term time, please do come into the
library to speak to the staff about what is involved. We would love
to welcome you as part of our friendly team.

Dr. Pam Fisher BEM
May 25th was a special day for a
remarkable Comberton lady, The Village
Hall was honoured to host the
investiture of Dr Pam Fisher with the
British Empire Medal, awarded in the
2021 New Year’s Honours, for her
outstanding voluntary service in
Cambridgeshire. The citation was read
out before the medal was pinned on her
by the Lord Lieutenant of
Cambridgeshire. Also present were the
Deputy Lord Lieutenant, the High Sheriff
and a restricted number of guests.

Many Comberton residents will
remember Pam with affection as a very caring GP in the village practice
but she was also deeply involved with many more organisations. From
a young girl in the Brownies, Pam has been committed to every branch
and activity at all levels of Guiding. With her medical knowledge she
willingly gave her time to train countless groups of Guides, Scouts and
others in the essential skills of first aid. Her dedication to helping and
supporting young people and their leaders seems endless. She helped
with Barton Guides, Comberton Rangers and larger Guiding occasions,
often as camp cook or doctor. She became District Commissioner,
Division Commissioner and held senior positions at County level.

Pam is heavily committed to church life in the widest sense, particularly
at Castle Street Methodist Church. She has served on an ecumenical
council of churches in Cambridge and been a mentor for students
training for the ministry. She is also well known for her involvement with
the WI, in Comberton and at county level.

She has helped and supported so many people over many years and
always found time to provide homemade food for occasions and events
large and small.

Congratulations to Pam on being awarded this honour in recognition of
a lifetime of voluntary service to the community.

St Mary’s Churchyard Biodiversity Project
All are welcome to a ‘Walk and Talk’ on Sunday 11th July at 4pm
This will be an opportunity to hear more, and ask quesons about, the project
developing and the proposed management plan for the churchyard.

We’re also keen for volunteers to get involved, so either get in touch or come
along on the day. We’ll need people to get involved in planng, and then
maintaining what develops in due course.

We are so excited about launching this project, creang great habitat for
pollinators, insects and other fauna, and developing some beauful spring and
summer meadow.

The Rev’d David Newton

On behalf of The Churchyard Biodiversity Steering Group

Comberton Allotments & Gardens Association
Continuing restrictions meant the cancellation of our May Plant Sale but
we hope that the rest of our 2021 programme will be able to proceed.

Best Kept Allotment: A reminder that the competition this year will be
judged on the Long Road allotment plots only and we anticipate this will
take place during July.

BBQ: Saturday 17th July (note change of date)
We are planning for this event to proceed on the Long Road allotment
site. Numbers will be limited to 30 (instead of our usual 40) as Covid
restrictions continue to apply, tickets will be £5 available from Quin
Hollick.

Email: Quin.hollick@dsl.pipex.com or phone 264410.

Autumn Show: Saturday 18th September in the Meridian School
The event may be slightly smaller this year as we anticipate having less
space; we are also planning changes to the entry details to make the
day more convenient to both exhibitors and the committee. We will
publish and distribute a schedule during the summer detailing the
Classes and any other changes we make, all in good time for the event.

AGM: Wednesday 24th November in the Village Hall
Hopefully life will be back to near normal by then and we can proceed
with our AGM with Cheese and Wine (or fruit Juice) beforehand, as
usual.

Keep the enthusiasm for horticulture and handicrafts, kindled last year,
alive for 2021.
