Community engagement
Community projects are the key point of community engagement of broad public
into the adaptation and UHI issue and so they are important part of awareness
raising campaign. It is indisputable that the involvement of people in concrete
green-blue infrastructure building and aftercare is a much more effective way of
awareness raising than simply telling the importance of nature-based measures to
adapt settlements to climate change.
Combined with communication on social networks, which also has the potential to
engage people deeper in the topic, and with sharing good practice (contest under
C5), the part of the project's specific objective that targets the general public=active
citizens, is comprehensively addressed.
This target group is able to send incentives to decision makers (public
administration, investors) and thus positively influence the achievement of the
second specific objective linked to the change of attitudes of these key stakeholders.
We support these initiatives by distributing grants to their projects, advising and
consulting, promoting their activities, sharing good practice and networking
initiatives across Europe. The situation in year 2020 was specified with the COVID-19
epidemic, which, among other things, imposed great restrictions on the movement
and meeting of people, but some community events especially in smaller groups
took place.

In 2019, 63 applications were submitted by municipalities, associations, non-profit
organizations, church charges and primary and nursery schools in the Czech
Republic. We supported 21 projects in ammount 1 443 392 CZK. A total of over 1000
people despite covid-pandemic participated. They planted 339 trees, 1549 shrubs,
and 2645 herbs. Events also included the purchase of work material, and the
creation of additional services such as compost, walkways, play elements, et cetera.

Description of a few projects:
School garden ZŠ Nerudova, České Budějovice
The school Nerudova created an "Insect Corner" in part of the school garden, which
serves the insect and the pupils while observing it. This corner included an elevated
flowerbed for pollinators, a rock garden, insect houses, a children’s strawberry
flowerbed, and a sensual walkway. The children participated in the creation of the
corner by designing, planting, creating houses for insects and a sensory sidewalk.

Recultivation of the garden for community activities in the Rožnov area
Educational Institute Kormidlo built an environmental garden and a natural
educational and experiential space „Na vlně“ that serves the citizens of Rožnov p. R.
and its surroundings for community meetings, as a garden for activities of the
educational center and kindergarten, which is located in the building. Adults have
the opportunity to escape into a more intimate green space that they can
participate in the creation and maintenance of. The garden offers the possibility of
exploring nature with all the senses, gaining a relationship and respect for living
ecosystems and knowing how to care for nature.
Krumsín - a new community space of all generations
The project aims is to create a new community site in Krumsín. The intention itself
arose from the needs of citizens who pointed out the absence of public space
within the municipal council where they could meet and spend their free time to
revitalize the traditions of the municipality. The newly created multifunctional space
will serve for social, cultural, educational, physical and ecological activities. The main

purpose is not merely realization, but the creation of a higher value within the
intergenerational bonds and the genius loci. In short, a place where everyone would
want to return.
Transformation of the school yard at Filipka: from the parking to garden
Garden near Studánka
Filipka School is an innovative family-type school, open and September 2019. In the
project was revitalized the school yard so that part of it turns into a garden for
relaxing and educational stays for children. The children and parents planted
together trees that provide shade and separate the foreign part of the yard with a
belt of shrubs, which will remain a parking lot. In the garden part were built
elevated flower beds, herbal spiral, sitting and fireplace.

Development of Meadow Orchard
Fern coordinates the establishment and development of an orchard / edible forest
(2 ha) on the border of forests and fields near Opava. The project aims was to plant
part of the shrub floor in an already established extensive orchard, which will
contribute to multiplying the biodiversity of the site. The park is open to the public.
This place is ideal for a natural meeting of people from the city and the village.

Improvement of the community garden in Moravičany
The project of community garden in Moravičany solved the area of the former parish
orchard near the local church. It is a continuation of the already existing community
center Beseda, which was created by cooperation of the parish and local volunteers.
The community created a loose landscape formation with elements of an edible
forest, as well as shelter and food for birds. The community want to pass on
experience to interested people from the village and wider surroundings, to hold
farm fairs, demonstrations of crafts or teaching permaculture gardening. This project
was awarded as the Green Oases of the year 2020.

Media response
In the Czech Republic, there were published 205 articles about Green Oasis and 171
articles about the Tree planting grants in 2019/2020 – online, print press, television.
In total they reached up to 239,39 GRP that corresponds to cumulative audience of
21 545 100 people.

In August 2020 was published call for proposals for Green Oases 2020/2021. 102
applications were submitted by municipalities, associations, non-profit
organizations, church charges and primary and nursery schools in the Czech
Republic. The results will be publicated in February 2021.
11Planting programs 2020 in Hungary

In 2020, Ökotárs – Hungarian Environmental Partnership Foundation will support 3
tree planting programs with Greenprint. The three municipalities supported are in
Western Hungary, in Zala county - Becsvölgye, Tolna county - Uzd, which is part of
Sárszentlőrinc and Somogy county - Libickozma. We supported the planting of 160
trees, 320 shrubs and flowers. In total of 75 volunteers participated (affected by the
covid-19 pandemic restrictions).

Becsvölgye
The planned location for tree planting is the Becsvölgye Adventure and Recreation
Park. The area (5000 m²) is municipally owned and is managed by the association
by decree of the local assembly.It is by common agreement the village centre as the
community house, spot courts, artificial grass pitches and the Adventure and
Recreation Park are all located here. The park has a community fruit drier and two
open-air, covered buildings, tables, benches, an herb garden, bird feeders and other
landscaped areas.
Previously, the association planted 12 native trees and 1000 shrubs here as well as
plants that are to be found in the village’s old flower gardens. As a next step, they
plan another round of tree planting, to replace those that didn’t survive on the one
hand, and to increase the area planted with trees on the other.After completing the
work, they would like to see a pleasant, shady, colourful park where the local people
can walk around in trails and read what plants they see. Make it a great place to
meet, talk, and organize community programs.
13Uzd
The areas of planned greening were designated by the municipality of
Sárszentlőrinc:
1. in Uzd, a playground at the end of a football field
2. both bans of the Donát creek from the bridge towards the village
3. Sárszentlőrinc: a small area next to the road near the waterworks, as well as
replacement of trees in an area at the end of Kossuth Lajos street planted a
few years ago.
These are currently mostly covered with lawn and some wild trees, shrubs.
The planting actions will be carried out with the help of members of the applicant
organizations, volunteers and supporters from the village community, and will take
place on one weekend in November.
14Libickozma
Libickozma is a one-street village, they
would like to replace and renew the
existing alleyway on both sides of the
street where unfortunately, many old
trees have fallen victim to the recent
storms. Along the street, they would like
to plant shrubs and trees next to the
village's community hall, also creating a
habitat for birds and insects. They will
also want to create a herb garden on the
community square. There will also be a
park that preserves the memory of more
than 40 local farmsteads (which were
part of Libickozma, but are now
uninhabited), where each plant would
commemorate one.

Media monitoring report in Hungary has been prepared on the basis of manual

focused on strictly local communities/issues.
In Hungary, the articles focused on Green oasis, community tree planting and tree
care. 9 articles were published directly about community planting events. There
were other 16 articles to the activity Tree of the Year.

Green oases in Slovakia and Poland
In Slovakia and Poland partners of LIFE TreeCheck project are not grant awarding
institutions. There is necessary to join forces with the granting partner and further
strengthen the advisory, promotional and good practice component.
As part of networking in Poland, we have received 3 nominations of Polish examples
of good practice for the Adapterra Awards 2020, and the project was awarted with
Jury Award – The best project Krakow Pocket Parks (Ogrody Krakowian) of the
Adapterra Awards 2020.
We support the awareness-raising and community campaign in Slovakia using the
information resources of our partners from the Environmental partnership
association. Good practice and nominations for the international contest can thus
be drawn from 23 community green infrastructure projects supported in 2020 for
60 000€. As part of further networking, we have already 2 Slovak nominations for
the Adapterra Awards 2020. In Slovakia supported the tree planting actions direct
the pilot city Košice.
18Description of a few projects:
Planting Life Tree in Košice
The aim of the project is to plant a tree per every Košice resident (almost 300k). This
volunteery activity try to fight against extreme high temperatures in the city and to
rise public awereness in the topic of greenery.
About 2000 trees were already planted (in public and private areas). City districts
and also private property owners could sign in a the Volunteery centre would
provide them trees to plant (or also help with planting).
A few examples of good practice for the Adapterra Awards 2020:
Pocket Retention Park: 'Expression Passage' on the IDEA Multi-Family
Estate in Gdańsk
The creation of a pedestrian and bicycle route imposed by the local spatial
development plan became a pretext for creating a pocket park. The Park and the
accompanying passage functionally and spatially connect both: the two locally
19important communication routes (on the north-south axis) and two parts of the
housing estate (on the east-west axis).
The idea of the Bauhaus and the person of Walter Gropius became the inspiration
for the designed forms and functionality of the space, which was reflected in the
multi-functionality of space, including the use of green areas as working green
infrastructure, the creation of modular street furniture and the introduction of
Gropius quotes referring to the role of green in the city and in general human life.
The important goal to achieve was hydrological and natural compensation in the
form of rain gardens for all impermeable surfaces, thanks to which all local rainfall
remains in the local ecosystems formed here.
20Pocket parks in Krakow (called Ogrody Krakowian)
Pocket parks (called Ogrody Krakowian) are relevant small public spaces that give
the opportunity to spend free time for all residents – regardless of age, interests or
needs. They are not only the vibrant centers of the local communities, but also
habitats for plants and animals improving wellbeing and biodiversity in the city.
Implementation of the project has proven that through comprehensive land
development, abandoned spaces can become lively multi-generational centers of
the local communities and a green and peaceful oasis in the concrete tissue of the
city.
The main goal was to create an ecological meeting place for local community,
being a habitat for plants and animals improving at the same moment wellbeing in
the city and the neighborhood itself. The plan was to create a first pocket park in
Europe designed to attract not only curious people, but also different species of
butterflies. After less than 2 months the students cooperating with Krakow
Municipal Greenspace Authority succeeded in collecting required amount of
money. Then, a diversity of native wildflowers, trees and sedges friendly for different
insects were planted and there, street furniture and educational playground were
designed and implemented.
21Each project of pocket park starts with an open debate where together with
residents there is a discussion about their needs. A principle that motivates us is to
make people feel like it’s their own garden. A place designed for and by the people.
22Ekocentrum ArTUR – Restoration of a School into an Educational Centre
Restoration of a school into an educational centre is an example adaptation of an
old traditional building into energetically effective and comfortable building while
preserving its culture-historical value and function using alternative source of energy.
The building was restored partially with the help of volunteers who could also try
their skills on insulation with use of natural renewable resources and materials. This
renovation breathed life into the old unused building and it created pleasant home-
like environment with healthy interior with wooden and clay surface.
