Character Bio
Name: Derrick the Deep Sea Diver
Hobby: Swimming in water discovering exotic fish
Dream: To one day explore the ocean and find out the secrets it holds
Favourite Food: Sushi
Favourite Colour: Blue
Favourite Exotic Fish: Blue Throat Triggerfish

After spending years ‘swimming around fish tanks and bath tubs, hoping to spot rare and exotic fish’
(LEGO.com Minifigures 2012), the mysterious Deep Sea Diver decides that it is time to live his dream
and venture out into the depths of the ocean. Hoping for excitement and adventure he takes his first
steps to exploring the watery deep, what he does not expect, however, is the fast approaching storm
that sweeps him away far from civilization.

After a fierce battle with strong tides, Derrick is washed up onto the shore of ‘Anchois’. The island
stands deserted in the middle of the ocean; only shipwrecked sailors have walked on its shores, lost
at sea never to be found again. There is something about the castle in the middle of the island that
attracts them to it, but they all met their fate by the hands of the mysterious forces that guard the
castle and its secrets.

The level starts with Derrick waking up on the beach of the island, he looks around and decides to go
and explore. The player then guides Derrick along the beach avoiding obstacles such as parts of
ships, crates and crabs. They make their way to the castle that stands in the middle of the island.

Research
Beach Mood Board

This mood board shows the type of colours that the beginning of the level will have, as well as
examples of what it will look like, i.e. the stereotypical beach with rocks, trees, sand etc. However,
the beach will also include debris such as crates, nets and parts of ships that have washed up on to
the shore.

                                                                                                         3

Castle Mood Board

This mood board shows some of the colours that the castle will include, for example dark colours
including blacks and blues. It also shows some of the architecture that will be included in the
building i.e. the keep, the courtyard, the tall windows, the towers and the type of brick that it is
made out of. As well as giving an idea on scale for how big the castle will be in relation to the
character.

Colour Palette Analysis
The Beach

The Colour Palette Analysis shows that most of the colours for the beginning of the level (the beach)
should include light and dark blues for the sea, pale yellows and browns for the sand and light and
dark greens for the foliage.

                                                                                                       4

The Castle

(Big Huge Labs 2012)

This Colour Palette Analysis shows that the castle setting will use darker colours than the beach,
using black, dark blue and brown. As the player progresses through the level the colour palette
gradually changes from the bright colours on the beach to the dark colours at the castle.

Similar Settings in Other Games
A good example of a game with a similar setting, i.e. a castle
in the level/game, would be LEGOTM Harry Potter Years 1-4
(2010), where a lot of the game is set exploring Hogwarts
castle and the grounds surrounding it. The colours for
Hogwarts are mainly bright and cheerful, especially at the
beginning of the game, however some areas use darker
colours when the game gets serious, for example when
Harry fights Lord Voldemort in the first year of the game, to
stop him from getting the Philosopher’s stone.

Walking and Running Speed
Due to the heavy diving gear that Derrick is wearing he cannot walk or run as fast as people without
a Diving suit on, therefore he runs at half the speed. His walking speed is 300 mm per minute and his
running speed is 700mm per minute. However, due to the flippers on his feet his jump is not
affected because they give him extra lift to compensate for the weight of the diving suit.

Special Ability
Derrick can dive into any size of water no matter how big or small, to find LEGOTM bricks, which can
then be built to progress in the level. The size of water can be as small as a puddle or as big as a fish

                                                                                                            5

tank or the ocean, depending on what is available.

Collectible Items
Exotic Fish: As with all LEGOTM games there are certain items that the player can collect within the
level; in LEGOTM Harry Potter Years 1-4 (2010) the player collects the Hogwarts crest and in LEGOTM
Star Wars (2005) the player collects Mini-Kits. In this level there are a number of exotic fish, either
on show or inside objects that the player can collect, in order to earn the golden fish at the end of
the level.
Studs: Within the level there are three different types of studs that the player can collect, that act as
currency within the game. These include:
Silver Studs: worth 10 points
Gold Studs: worth 100 points
Blue Studs: worth 1000 points
Studs are scattered about within the level and are also dropped when the player destroys the
destructible items. If the player dies at any point in the level, either from falling off the edge or being
killed by an enemy, they will lose studs (although they can be picked up again); 1000 if killed by an
enemy and 2000 if killed by falling off the edge.
True Diver: If the player collects over 80% of the studs in the level then they will earn the status of
True Diver
Health Pick Ups: Scattered about the level, especially near lots of enemies and the boss, there are
health pick ups that the player can pick up when they are low on health. When the player defeats an
enemy, the enemy will also drop a health pick up for the player to collect.

Weapon
At the beginning of the level when Derrick wakes up to find that he is washed up on an island, he
finds part of a harpoon in a ship wreck that cannot be shot but can be used as a weapon to hit
things, such as crates and crabs that try to attack him.

Obstacles
As the player makes their way along the beach they will come up against obstacles such as small
crates and pieces of wood, these are destructible items that the player can destroy using their
weapon, after which LEGOTM studs are released that the player collects. There are also rocks and
parts of ships, such as the mast, that the player must jump over in order to proceed because these
cannot be destroyed. Along the way there also some enemies that the player must defeat otherwise
they will keep getting attacked; on the beach the player is attacked by a few crabs and in the castle
they are attacked by suits of armour.

                                                                                                         6
Computer Games Design 1B: LEGOTM Level Design Assignment
Victoria Bailey 10004534

Enemies
Along the way the player will face many enemies; these include crabs on the beach and suits of
armour in the castle. The crabs are half the size of the player’s LEGOTM character and the suits of
armour are the same size.
The Boss: In the dungeons the player will fight many suits of armour; after these have been defeated
the armour left on the floor combines together to make a giant suit of armour that the player must
defeat. To do this the player must dodge the weapons (i.e. spears and maces) that the boss will
throw at them, when he pauses to conjure up another weapon the player must attack. This should
be repeated a total of three times to defeat him.

Spatial Study and Flow

This diagram is to show the events and locations of the level.

                                                                                                  7
Computer Games Design 1B: LEGOTM Level Design Assignment
Victoria Bailey 10004534

This diagram is to show the different sections that the player will walk through. Although it is clearly
a linear organisation, where the player can only go the way they are supposed to, i.e. they cannot
choose a different route, they can however explore the areas. The areas will include destructible
crates and pieces of wood that will release LEGOTM studs and other collectible items when destroyed
by the player. The height of the circles for the ‘Beach’, ‘Big Rock’ and the ‘Dungeons’ are lower than
the other four areas because in the level the player uses the ‘Big Rock’ to get up to higher ground,
and then uses steps in the ‘Corridor’ to go down to the dungeons.

This diagram shows the locations the player will walk through, similar to the previous diagram;
however, the different sizes of the circles show the differences in activity in that area. For example,
the ‘Beach’, the ‘Courtyard’ and the ‘Dungeons’ are bigger circles because these include many
enemies and interactive elements such as the character’s special ability and buildable objects. The
‘Big Rock’ circle is the smallest because it is not an area to pass through; instead it is a tool for the
player to use in order to proceed in the level.

                                                                                                            8

Implementation
Level Run Through
The player starts off washed up on a beach after a big storm, the character already has a weapon
that he can use to fight enemies with and destroy crates. The first thing the player comes across is a
crate that can be destroyed; when the crate has been destroyed studs are released and the player
can collect them. There are a few studs to left of the crate, as well as one of the collectible exotic
fish. The player then has to jump over the mast of a shipwrecked ship that is blocking the way and
collect the studs; next the player comes across their first enemy, a crab, these are easy to defeat but
if the player does not kill them, then they will keep attacking the player and kill them. The player
should then destroy the 5 destructible crates (acting as one destructible element) that stands in the
way, once destroyed the player can collect the studs dropped by the crates. Standing behind the
crates are two crabs waiting for the player, once defeated the player can collect the studs and health
pick up in this area, as well as destroy the pieces of wood (also a destructible element).

The player can then jump up onto two rocks to collect the studs and collectible exotic fish that are
available. When the player jumps off of the second rock they will have to fight another crab, after
which they can use their character’s special ability by the puddle (the character jumps into the
puddle and brings out buildable LEGOTM bricks), the player uses the LEGOTM bricks to build a bridge
to cross the gap. On the other side of the bridge is an enemy crab; the player should defeat it and
then collect the health pick up. After which, they should double jump onto the rock that stands
before them, collecting the studs as they jump, once on the rock the player must double jump onto
the next rock and then jump up onto the ledge in order to proceed with the level. Next, the player
should destroy the crate that is in the way, once destroyed it releases a collectible exotic fish, the
player can then collect the studs in the area. They should then build up the buildable element,
making a lever that releases the drawbridge once activated, so that the player can cross the moat.

The player then enters the courtyard where there are five suits of armour; the player must defeat
these in order to proceed. The player can then destroy all of the crates in the area, as well as collect
all of the studs and health pick ups. Next they will go through the door and enter the castle, where
they will find a corridor, with more suits of armour in it. The player should then go to the left hand
side of the corridor and double jump onto the first ledge (collecting studs as they go), then double
jumping onto the second ledge. Once on the second ledge they will use their character’s special
ability to dive into the fish tank and retrieve some LEGOTM bricks, as the player jumps into the fish
tank they will collect the collectible exotic fish. Once the player has jumped out of the fish tank they
must jump down off of the two ledges and place the blocks on the floor, for as the player passed the
two stationary suits of armour (by jumping onto the ledges) they came alive and are now after the
player, who must defeat them. Once defeated the player can collect the studs, health pick ups and
destroy the crate in the area before building up the LEGOTM bricks to make a lever, which will open
the door to the dungeon.

Once the player enters the dungeon, they will walk down some steps where they will have to fight
many suits of armour. Once the suits of armour have been defeated they will have 5 seconds to
collect the studs and pick ups in the dungeon before the suits of armour form together to make the
big suit of armour (which will act as the boss). To defeat the boss the player must dodge the
weapons thrown at them, when he pauses to conjure another weapon they should attack him; this

                                                                                                      12
Victoria Bailey 10004534

should happen a total of three times. Once the boss has been defeated the player should collect the
rest of the studs and the collectible exotic fish (that appears after the boss has been defeated) to
end the level.

all of the elements the player has to complete i.e. destructible elements, build up elements and the
character’s special ability, as well as the enemies they will run into.

AI Movement Paths
The next few diagrams show the movement paths of the AI in the level.

                                                                                                   14

This diagram shows the movement paths of the crabs on the beach. They follow the paths they are
on, side to side across the level; once they see the player they change from a path follow behaviour
to a pursuit behaviour and start attacking the player.

This diagram shows the movement path of the crab at the beginning of the level, moving side to side
following the path until the player is seen and then its behaviour changes to a pursuit behaviour. The
suits of armour in the courtyard wander about in the path shown until the player enters the path

                                                                                                   15
Victoria Bailey 10004534

area; the suits of armour start to attack the player using a pursuit behaviour. The suit of armour in
the corridor follows the path it is on walking back and forth, once it has seen the player it starts to
attack using the pursuit behaviour. The suit of armour standing by the ledges on the wall is immobile
until the player either jumps over or walks past it.

The second suit of armour by the ledges on the wall is also immobile until the player either jumps
over or walks past it; once this has happened the two suits of armour follow the paths shown on the
diagram, until they see the player and switch to a pursuit behaviour to attack the player. The first
suit of armour in the dungeons walks up and down the steps following the path until they spot the
player and change to a pursuit behaviour to attack the player. The suit of armour at the bottom of
the stairs uses a path follow behaviour following the path shown on the diagram, when they see the
player their behaviour changes to a pursuit behaviour. The five other suits of armour use a wander
behaviour to wander about the area shown on the diagram until the player enters the area and they
switch to a pursuit behaviour. The Boss moves about the area shown in the diagram but mainly
stands still when throwing weapons.
