St John's Campus Hear from the Primary School Counsellor and read about Sports Day, Year 4 and 5 Camps, a Year 1 Excursion and more. In this Section From the Primary School Counsellor St John's Campus Sports Day School Service Year 4 Camp Year 5 Camp COVID-19 Safety Reminder Year 1 Railway and Maritime Museums Excursion National Ride2School Day Student Achievement From the Primary School Counsellor Harmony Week is a time for the students and staff at the St John’s Campus to come together and celebrate the rich diversity of cultures in our community and share the values of unity, inclusion and belonging. Harmony Week (15- 21 March) is an Australian Government program that centres on the message that ‘Everyone belongs’, reinforcing the importance of inclusiveness to all Australians. Harmony Day began in 1999, coinciding with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. This Year, St John’s Campus staff and students are marking Harmony Day on Friday, 19 March in a host of new, fun and exciting ways! Wearing the colour orange or traditional/cultural clothes brightened up the campus, playing cultural games in House teams was lots of fun and having a whole school picnic helped everyone feel that they belong. Throughout Harmony Week, students participated in various class-based activities that celebrate our cultural diversity, inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. Each class approached the themes of Harmony Week in their own special ways. Some studied Australia’s immigration history, whereas others explored values such as kindness, acceptance and our common humanity and produced wonderful pieces of art. Across the Campus, we have displayed our students' themed artwork, read stories and learnt more about our own cultural heritage. The theme of Harmony Week fits in well with our Christian values of love and compassion for all people. We believe that everyone is made uniquely and loved by God. These themes have been integrated into devotions for classes and staff, Christian studies as well as Art and Music. Harmony Week has helped us to understand and appreciate each other and build community, both within our classrooms and as a whole school. We have also connected to our own and other cultures and to other countries. It has been an opportunity to celebrate and understand our identity and history, to have fun together and send a message that everyone belongs at Concordia.
Harmony Week also creates opportunities for all of us to think, talk about and recognise how our differences make Australia a great place to live. Did you know? Over the last 70 years more than seven and a half million migrants have made Australia their home. Nearly half of Australians were born overseas or have a parent who was. People from over 200 countries make up our Australian community and over 300 languages are spoken in our homes. Apart from English, the most common languages spoken in Australia are Mandarin, Arabic, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Italian, Greek, Tagalog/Filipino, Hindi, Spanish and Punjabi. Tamara Martin Counsellor - St John’s Campus St John's Campus Sports Day On Friday 5 March, St John’s Campus held its annual Sports Day in ideal conditions. Our students looked brilliant in their House-coloured clothes with many adding coloured hair, socks and other accessories to show their allegiances. House pride could be heard around the streets of Highgate as the senior students led their House raps in a bid to gain valuable points awarded by the Principal, Mr Paech. It was Winchester and Cheltenham who won the rap battle, being awarded six points each to gain a narrow one-point lead over Highgate and Malvern. All year levels then participated in the sprints, displaying their speed to the large crowd of parents and friends. Tabloid events were next with Junior Primary students competing in novelty relays while the Middle and Upper Primary students demonstrated their skills in a range of field events, including high jump, shot put, long jump and long throw. The final events included the long run and the baton relay which had the fastest two boys and girls from Year 1 to Year 6 in each House sprinting it out for the final few points of the day. Once all the events had been run and won, an entertaining novelty relay involving parents, teachers and House Captains gave the scoring tent enough time to finalise scores. A pin drop could be heard as Mr Phillips announced the winners and once again it came down to Winchester and Highgate as the last two teams remaining. This year it was Highgate who regained the Sports Day Shield, taking a narrow eight-point victory. Congratulations to all students who participated and displayed their skills. A huge thanks goes to the staff members and parents who helped and supported the day. Mick Phillips Sports Day Coordinator - St John's Campus School Service
All families are invited to be a part of the School Service in the Chapel at 10am on Sunday, 21 March. This will be the first School Service for 12 months and we are pleased that we can come together as a Concordia College and St John’s Church community to worship. The Year 1 and Year 6 students will be leading the Service with Pastor Andrew’s support. During this service, we will also be acknowledging the years of service in the Lutheran education system of some of the St John’s Campus staff. Mr John Proeve, Executive Director of Lutheran Education South Australia, Northern Territory and Western Australia, will be presenting service awards to the following staff: 40 years: Michael Paech 30 years: Janette Haynes, Nolene Gehling and Andrea Gladigau 20 years: Sally Staggs, Leanne Jaensch, Rachel Muldoon and Tim Williams. Congratulations and thank you to the staff for their dedicated service and we hope that many families will be able to come and celebrate their achievements. We also look forward to having the students lead our worship time. Year 4 Camp The Year 4 classes headed up to Woodhouse Scout Camp last week to engage and achieve in an Active Education camp all about building resilience. Many fears and challenges were overcome and the students and staff were blessed with great weather whilst away. All of them made terrific advancements in their abilities to manage new situations and grow personally. As staff, we were very proud of how they managed themselves and interacted with each other. A great success! Anita Ruggiero and Celina Read Year 4 Teachers Year 5 Camp Last week, 55 excited Year 5 students plus five teachers set out for a two-night camp at Ankara, Walker Flat. The camp included fun activities, great food, superb weather and some wonderful moments that all participants will never forget. An early activity involved a lot of teamwork and good communication skills to be able to complete the tasks successfully. Later, groups ventured all around Walker Flat as they worked together to complete an orienteering task. The following day, students tested water from around the campsite, using a variety of tools. It was amazing how different the pH levels and the cloudiness of water from different sources could be. One great part of this task was using a microscope to examine all the macro organisms that live in the river water. Another awesome activity was raft building. Student teams were given pieces of rope, five plastic cartons and some long pieces of wood to make a raft that could carry them on the river. Some rafts were quite well made while other rafts were a little dubious, but all students tried hard and had a great attitude.
Another favourite activity was kayaking. Students travelled up stream to get used to how to manoeuvre the kayak. Once they had travelled some distance from camp they learned, using some of their team building skills, how to build a raft with the kayaks by placing them all next to each other. The aim of this task was to stand up in the kayaks without falling out. The camp will provide many lasting memories! Mike Kriewaldt and Janine Sarson-Parker Year 5 Teachers COVID-19 Safety Reminder We are thankful that we are in quite a strong position in South Australia in relation to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but we also know we cannot be complacent as the safety of our community remains our highest priority. A reminder that students with any symptoms consistent with COVID-19 should not attend school, and when students are unwell families should follow the protocols below: Anyone with symptoms (fever, cough, fatigue, sore throat, runny nose, shortness of breath or loss of taste or smell) should get tested for COVID-19, even if symptoms are mild. Testing locations are available online Return to school as soon as you get the all clear from your test and are no longer experiencing symptoms. If you or your child(ren) test positive, notify the College immediately SA Health have a contact tracing reference list. Follow the link here Concordia College will continue to maintain practices that support the health and safety of the entire College community. Thank you for your continued support. Year 1 Railway and Maritime Museums Excursion Learning about Systems The Year 1 students had a wonderful day exploring some of the transport systems of the past and thinking about how these systems have helped our community to grow. We visited the Railway and Maritime Museums in Port Adelaide as part of our How We Organise Ourselves Unit of Inquiry. We learned about the importance of the shipping and rail systems in creating our community as we know it now through transporting goods and passengers. The children worked in small collaborative groups and had fun completing some challenging and engaging scavenger hunts to find relevant information. Concordia Campus Hear from the Director of Student Learning and read about Sports Day, the Year 12 Formal, Music news and more. In this Section From the Director of Digital Resources Concordia Campus Sports Day School Immunisation Program - Years 8 and 10 (reminder) Year 12 Formal Year 11 Geography Excursion Harmony Week COVID-19 Safety Reminder Music Notes Year 9 Concordia - The Rite Journey Calling Ceremony Year 9 Warrawong Field Study National Ride2School Day Student Achievement From the Director of Digital Resources In 1998, I attended a conference where we discussed the whole future of learning within a 21st century environment. The internet was relatively new, student access to devices was in computer labs, many homes did not have web access or a computer, mobile phones were big clumsy devices with annoying descending ringtones, but we talked about the nature of 21st century learning, the need for students to develop far more than the simple 3Rs, and become creative, critical thinkers, collaborative, agile, communicators and literate in media, information/data and technologies. Now in 2021, two decades into the 21st century, while the 3Rs (and all they imply) continue to be an essential part of every student’s learning experience, our young people are also learning how to be safe and responsible online, how to search and curate, adapt and recreate online information, how to communicate and express their understanding and ideas through multi- media and multi-modal forms, how to collaborate and share, and how to be adept and agile, resilient and respectful in digital environments. Digital learning takes an amazing array of shapes and forms, from simplistic creation of Word documents and Excel spreadsheets to complex multi-media video and online web productions based on complex algorithms and databases. The potential for creativity by our students on their College devices is exciting as is the potential for learning with a range of other digital resources. The Resource Centre and Library teams in the College are exploring ways to provide our students with opportunities to engage with emerging and contemporary digital technologies. We are setting up MakerSpaces where students can use 3D printing and a range of digital tools to learn and create during breaks and in the curriculum as teachers define activities. We are exploring how we can effectively set up learning sessions with virtual reality (VR) kits, an initiative especially valuable in a world where travel is restricted. We are also about to reach out to local community groups who offer digital learning in schools. These are exciting times in the area of Digital Resources, and we look forward to the results of these explorations coming to

Generally, students placing first or second in Division 1 events will be part of the team that competes at the end of Term 1 and again at the end of Term 3. Extenuating circumstances do come into play though. Occasionally a Division 2 performance will be superior to a Division 1. We often have a few students competing in representative events which conflict with Sports Day and there may be other students who are unwell or injured whose prior performances have been superior to those achieved on Sports Day. Unlike the Term 3 Interschool Athletics, the Term 1 competition only provides for one competitor per event per age group and has no U13 division, but reserves for each event will be named, generally based on performance. The involvement of those reserves at the Term 1 Interschool event is invaluable both as an experience for them and in terms of providing assistance such as officiating and filling events that injured/ill competitors cannot complete. School Immunisation Program - Years 8 and 10 (reminder) Immunisation Information for Parents of Year 8 and 10 Students The 2021 SA School Immunisation Program will be offered at the College by Pop Up Medics. Sue Bates Medical Support Officer Year 12 Formal The Year 12s celebrated their Formal in fine fashion on Friday, 5 March. After extensive planning, and an afternoon of meticulous preparation, our seniors converged on the InterContinental for the evening. Great food, wonderful company and a packed dance floor led to an event that played an integral part in the development of this 2021 team. Adrian Bright Assistant Head of Senior School Year 11 Geography Excursion The Year 11 Geography class took their first field trip of 2021 to understand the prevention, management and impacts of natural hazards. Students headed up to Belair National Park on Wednesday, 3 March to make some assessments of preparedness of local homes for a bushfire and to compile data on prescribed burn sites and a past bushfire location. This will allow them to assess the overall risk potential for Belair National Park and analyse whether prescribed burns are an
effective management tool. Field trips are an integral part of Geography and continue to provide students with an engaging tool to build on their understanding. Emily Johnson Geography Teacher Harmony Week Harmony Week is an annual event in Australia that celebrates cultural and social diversity and promotes reconciliation. Under this year’s theme of Everyone Belongs, Forum Representatives from Years 7 to 11 were invited to attend a whole- day workshop with four other schools from the Unley area. Students engaged in a variety of discussion and theatre-based activities and were given the opportunity to commence drafting an Action Plan to implement at school. The day served as an important and timely reminder that we must all walk the journey of reconciliation together. Music Notes AHOMINGS Meeting Report
The Association of Heads of Music in Non-Government Schools is an important group which meets each term to discuss matters relating to Music Education in South Australia and beyond. Each year, our Term 1 meeting not only involves Heads of Music, but also Student Leaders who are invited to attend a workshop relating to their role as a peer leader in the school Music context. Alex (Year 12, Concert Band Leader) and Thalia (Year 10, Wind Ensemble Leader) were chosen to represent Concordia’s Ensemble Leaders this year. They were led in discussion about their roles by world-renowned musician Kym Perling. Their workshop ended in a spectacular jam session with students from across Adelaide composing and performing a piece which they named “Everything Is Cancelled”, in honour of 2020. Manus Noble Visit Last week, some Year 7 Music classes were fortunate to have been visited by one of the world’s finest classical guitar players, Manus Noble. Manus is originally from the UK and has moved to Adelaide with his wife (Old Concordian Jehanne Bastoni, 2007). In the sessions, Manus performed a number of exquisite pieces for the students, as well as explained various techniques and performance strategies. It was an outstanding opportunity for our students to witness a world-class performer within the confines of their classroom. Mat Noble Director of Music Year 9 Concordia - The Rite Journey Calling Ceremony Recently, the Year 9 students had a very early start, arriving at school at 4.50am on Friday, 5 March to journey to the Bluff at Victor Harbor for the Calling Ceremony, which is part of the Concordia - The Rite Journey pastoral care program. Doing out-of-the-ordinary things can be challenging, but they can also memorable and worthwhile. I hope all of our Year 9s will remember, as I will, the following aspects of the day: the quietness of sitting with your classmates and teachers on the Bluff in the half dark overlooking Victor Harbor listening to the string quartet playing Amazing Grace (which gave me goose bumps) watching foamy waves crash against the rocks of nearby Wright Island hearing the friendly morning warble of the family of magpies feeling the gentle mist on your face as the clouds threatened something wetter, and the salty seaside smells that somehow relax the mind. What a luxury, then, to be strolling down a beach on a Friday morning when we’d be normally just be waking up or getting ourselves ready for school. What a privilege it was to sit around our beach ‘fire pit’ listening to heart-felt reflections and honest commitments about stepping up as young adults, or joining in the sticks game and learning some truths about playing our role to help the whole group achieve. All of these and more made the way-too-early wake up worth every moment. Thanks Mr Simmons for coordinating this special event, to the friendly students who came and chatted, to the bus drivers (often over-looked), and to the teaching staff who planned and made this such a special day for the students.
May Concordia - The Rite Journey have many more memorable and worthwhile moments... Mark Rathjen Assistant Head of Middle School Year 9 Warrawong Field Study Are conservation parks effective in preserving native ecosystems? This was the Inquiry question Year 9 Geography students were tasked to answer in their recent Field Study to Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary in the Adelaide Hills. Our park- rangers-in-training engaged in a variety of scientific and geographical activities, including quadrat mapping and flora and fauna species identification. A highlight of this study is always the native animal show, where a few lucky students were given the opportunity to ‘cuddle’ some friendly fauna! A wonderful day that enabled them to apply their classroom knowledge to a real-world context. Vanessa Narino-Terry English and Humanities Teacher National Ride2School Day Did you know that Friday, 19 March is National Ride2School Day? Students are encouraged to take part by riding to school on the day.
