Welcome Back!

As we cautiously return to in-person Services at St. John’s, we have put a number of
COVID-19 Protocols in place to keep our Parish and Visitors safe. Many of these
(cleaning, etc) might be invisible to you as you worship with us in our Sanctuary the
Easter morning. Please know that our Clergy, staff and volunteers are vigilant in monitor-
ing the Covid Risk in Cabell County and surrounding areas and in ensuring that all Proto-
cols are consistently followed. In consultation with our Bishop, Clergy, staff and medical
experts, our Vestry continues to remain vigilant and will tightened or relaxed the Proto-
cols as necessary in the coming months to address current vulnerabilities. If you would
like a full booklet of the protocols put into place by our Vestry, please let one of our ush-
ers or staff know and we will make sure you receive a copy. Just to review those that
most impact our time together here in the Sanctuary:
 In person worship in the Sanctuary will be limited to a maximum of 40% of the capacity of our Nave
 Reservations are not required at this time, but the Vestry will continue to monitor our attendance to
       determine if that might need to change in the future.
 Masks must be worn at all times. Please sanitize your hands at the provided Sanitizing stations prior
       to being seated and again before receiving communion.
 Entrance will be via the front steps into the Narthex and exit is via the side door onto the parking lot.
       Only the side aisles will be used as an entrance and exit. If you aren't able to navigate the steps,
       please come to the side door. Ushers will be at both doors to assist.
 Ushers will dismiss by rows at the end of the Service
 Pews are marked with blue tape in those areas where you may NOT sit.
 We will not physically pass the Peace or offering plates. Offering place will be at both the entrance
       and exit to the church. Of course, you may continue to send your pledges and donations by
       mail, e-banking or by leaving them in the mailbox on the door to the Parish Office.
 Those living together may sit together, but others must stay seated 6 feet apart.
 The distribution of Communion is limited to the Host only. While the Consecration will occur at
       its usual place in the Service, Distribution will take place after the Dismissal (as you exit the
       Sanctuary).
 We may have up to two soloists, but there will be no congregational singing at this time.
 Our resumption of Services ONLY applies to the 10:30 Sunday Service at this time. Other services
       and gatherings will be added over time.

Remember: Keep watching your email and Facebook for further updates each week. If
Cabell County slips back into the Red Zone, in-person services will be suspended until
the situations again improves. If you wish to receive notification by phone of any changes
prior to a Sunday Service, please contact the Parish Office at 304.525.9105 to be added
to a phone tree.

                     WE WILL CONTINUE TO OFFER ALL OF OUR
                    CURRENT ONLINE SERVICES AND ACTIVITIES
           and welcome you to worship and participate with us in the environment
                              in which you are most comfortable.
                   A list of streaming times is at the end of this booklet.
                                                     3
St. John's is church your way:
                            relevant, reverent, relaxed.

The Episcopal Church is a place that is both ancient and new; the faith we hold goes back to Jesus, back
to his Old Testament spiritual ancestors, back to those who walked the earth before us and found holy
ground. What we do is often based on ancient patterns -- worship and music; loving service to the poor,
the hurting and the lonely; working for justice and peace in our community and the world; lively and fear-
less exploration of ideas and theology. But our faith is also wholly contemporary -- engaging in the culture
and needs of today. The theology of the Episcopal Church allows room for mystery, reason and growth.

WHAT WE ARE FOR
The dignity and value of every person and an open-minded, passionate commitment to truth. Inclusivity.
The importance of each person's unique spiritual journey. Seeing Christ in every person we meet. The
sacredness of life's stages and rites of passage. The value of community. The hard work it takes to en-
sure that ALL are ALWAYS welcomed. Telling the truth about life's challenges. And striving for a church
experience that speaks to all ages and stages of life!

WHAT WE ARE AGAINST
Claiming we have all the answers. Elitism and exclusivism -- most especially within the church. Bigotry for
any reason. Authoritarianism. Indifference to injustice and suffering. Superficial answers to hard ques-
tions. Boring sermons, bad music and general carelessness. (So, God help us, because -- try as we might
-- we're human after all and we don't ALWAYS avoid these!)

WHAT WE VALUE
Community. Open hearts. Open minds and open arms. Deep faith. Staying current in hearts and minds,
but with our roots firmly planted in tradition. Reason. Honesty -- with ourselves and each other. Civic re-
sponsibility as citizens of our communities, our country and the world. Debate that allows for mutual re-
spect. Music and beauty to glorify God -- and for their own sake. Joy in God's creation and our responsi-
bility as caretakers. Anyone who make the effort to get to know and follow Jesus.

                            Everybody needs a place to belong...
                                  ...make St. John's yours!
You will fit right in here; adults, children, families, widows and widowers, retired folks, partners,
those in transition, empty-nesters, divorced, single parents, reluctant teens, blue jeans, flip
flops, shorts, sport coats and wiggly children are all welcome here. Come on, give going to
church on a regular basis a try — you’ll be amazed at how much Sunday worship can make the
rest of the week easier, better and more meaningful. Have questions or doubts? Call to

The Liturgy of the Word
The Prelude
The Opening Hymn: Come, ye faithful, raise the strain (pg. 12) Sung by the Cantor

Priest: Alleluia. Christ is risen.
People: The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia.

Priest and people:
Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid:
Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly
love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Benedictus es, Domine arr. John Rutter Sung by the Cantor
                                    Glory to you, Lord God of our fathers;
                                    you are worthy of praise; glory to you.
                               Glory to you for the radiance of your holy Name;
                               we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.
                                 Glory to you in the splendor of your temple;
                                  on the throne of you majesty, glory to you.
                                 Glory to you, seated between the cherubim;
                               we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.
                                      Glory to you, beholding the depths;
                                   in the high vault of heaven, glory to you.
                                  Glory to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit;
                               we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

The Collect
Priest: The Lord be with you.
People:       And also with you.
Priest: Let us pray: (The collect of the day is read. You may stand or kneel.)

Almighty God, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ overcame death and opened to us
the gate of everlasting life: Grant that we, who celebrate with joy the day of the Lord's resurrection,
may be raised from the death of sin by your life-giving Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who
lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Lessons
Please be seated for the readings. The Lector ends each reading with “The Word of the Lord.”
The People Respond: Thanks be to God.

The First Lesson: Isaiah 25:6-9
 On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples
     a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines,
                                                      5
of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear.
  And he will destroy on this mountain
        the shroud that is cast over all peoples,
        the sheet that is spread over all nations;
        he will swallow up death forever.
  Then the Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from all faces,
        and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth,
        for the LORD has spoken.
It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us.
        This is the LORD for whom we have waited;
        let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

The Psalm: 118:1-2, 14-24 Confitemini Domino Sung by the Cantor
  1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; *
        his mercy endures for ever.
  2 Let Israel now proclaim, *
        "His mercy endures for ever."
  14 The LORD is my strength and my song, *
        and he has become my salvation.
  15 There is a sound of exultation and victory *
        in the tents of the righteous:
  16 "The right hand of the LORD has triumphed! *
        the right hand of the LORD is exalted!
        the right hand of the LORD has triumphed!"
  17 I shall not die, but live, *
        and declare the works of the LORD.
  18 The LORD has punished me sorely, *
        but he did not hand me over to death.
  19 Open for me the gates of righteousness; *
        I will enter them;
        I will offer thanks to the LORD.
  20 "This is the gate of the LORD; *
        he who is righteous may enter."
  21 I will give thanks to you, for you answered me *
        and have become my salvation.
  22 The same stone which the builders rejected *
        has become the chief cornerstone.
  23 This is the LORD's doing, *
        and it is marvelous in our eyes.
24 On this day the LORD has acted; *
        we will rejoice and be glad in it. 6
The Epistle: Acts 10:34-43
Peter began to speak to Cornelius and the other Gentiles: "I truly understand that God shows no par-
tiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know
the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ--he is Lord of all. That mes-
sage spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God
anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and
healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did
both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him
on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as
witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach
to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All
the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through
his name."

The Sequence Hymn: He is risen, he is risen! (pg. 13) Sung by the Cantor

The Gospel: John 20:1-18
Please stand. The priest announces the gospel. The People Respond: Glory to you, Lord Christ.
Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and
saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the
other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the
tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” Then Peter and the other disciple set out
and went toward the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter
and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but
he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the lin-
en wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen
wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first,
also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he
must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes.

But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she
saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other
at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away
my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” When she had said this, she turned around
and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why
are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir,
if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to
her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher). Jesus said to
her, “Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and
say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary Magda-
lene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said
these things to her. The gospel is ended. The People Respond: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon 7 Fr. Ray Hage
The Nicene Creed
spoken by all

                                                             On the third day he rose again
We believe in one God,                                             in accordance with the scriptures;
       the Father, the Almighty,
                                                             he ascended into heaven
       maker of heaven and earth,
                                                                   and is seated at the right hand
       of all that is, seen and unseen.
                                                                   of the Father.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, He will come again in glory
     the only Son of God, to judge the living and the dead,
     eternally begotten of the Father, And his kingdom will have no end.
     God from God, Light from Light,
     true God from true God, We believe in the Holy Spirit,
     begotten, not made, the Lord, the giver of life,
     of one Being with the Father. who proceeds from the Father
     Through him all things were made. and the Son.
     For us and for our salvation With the Father and the Son
             he came down from heaven: he is worshipped and glorified.
     by the power of the Holy Spirit He has spoken through the Prophets.
             he became incarnate from We believe in one holy catholic
                   the Virgin Mary, and apostolic church.
             and was made man. We acknowledge one baptism
     For our sake he was crucified for the forgiveness of sins.
             under Pontius Pilate; We look for the resurrection of the dead,
     He suffered death and was buried. and the life of the world to come.
                                                             Amen.

The Prayers of the People Form III
The Leader and People pray responsively

Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church;
That we all may be one.
Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you;
That your Name may be glorified by all people.
We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons;
That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments.
We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world;
That there may be justice and peace on the earth.
Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake;
That our woks may find favor in your sight.

                                                   8
Have compassion on those victims of violence and oppression and those who suffer from any grief or
trouble;
That they may be delivered from their distress.
Give to the departed eternal rest, especially Paul Whear and William Evans;
Let light perpetual shine upon them.
We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy;
May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.
Let us pray for our own needs and those of others…
(Additional prayers are offered for our community and world, either silently or aloud. Prayer requests for our St.
John’s Community are found at the end of this booklet.)
The Celebrant may add a concluding Collect.

                                  This is Eucharistic Prayer B. The people stand.

Priest The Lord be with you.
People         And also with you.
Priest         Lift up your hearts.
People We lift them to the Lord.
Priest Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth.
But chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord;
for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By
his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life.
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of
heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

                                                          9
The Sanctus arr. Calvin Hampton Sung by the Cantor
                              Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might
                                   Heaven and earth are full of your glory
                                            Hosanna in the highest
                              Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
                                            Hosanna in the highest
You may now kneel or sit as you are able, or you may choose to continue standing.
We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in crea-
tion; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above
all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from
the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil,
and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of
sin into righteousness, out of death into life.
On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to
you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for
you. Do this for the remembrance of me."
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said,
"Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for
the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink
it, do this for the remembrance of me."
Therefore, according to his command, O Father,
Celebrant and People

                                         We remember his death,
                                        We proclaim his resurrection,
                                        We await his coming in glory;
And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from
your creation, this bread and this wine.
We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament
of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we
may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all
things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where,
with [ and] all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and
daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the
author of our salvation.
By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Al-
mighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.
                                                       10
The Lord’s Prayer
And now as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
  hallowed be thy Name,
  thy kingdom come,
  thy will be done,
     on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
  as we forgive those
     who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
  but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
  and the power, and the glory,
  for ever and ever. Amen.

The Fraction arr. David Hurd Sung by the Cantor
                                          Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.
                                     Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
                                        therefore let us keep the feast.
                                          Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

The priest and people pray:
Eternal God, heavenly Father, Send us now into the world in peace,
you have graciously accepted us and grant us strength and courage
as living members of your Son to love and serve you
our Savior Jesus Christ,                                     with gladness and singleness of heart;
and you have fed us with spiritual food through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayers for our St. John’s Community

                                      We pray for each other.

 You may ask to have a name added to our list of those for whom we pray. Simply contact the par-
 ish office at office@stjohnshuntingtonwv.org or call 304-525-9105. We keep names on the list for
                one calendar month. You may renew at the beginning of each month.

  We pray for all those sick or suffering, for those seeking prayer or guidance and for the departed.

             You can also say the name aloud or silently during the prayers themselves.
                         It is our privilege to pray for those you care about.

We pray for our own needs and those of others.

pastor who will care for your people, equip us for our ministries and reach out to all your chil-

For the heroes and heroines of the struggle for civil rights (thanks and fu-
ture encouragement in commemoration of the April death of Martin Luther King, Jr) O bounti-
ful and merciful God: you have blessed your people with great prophets and leaders
to advance the cause of equality under law in this nation and in the world. By their teaching
and preaching; by their action and example; by their marching, demonstrating, and sitting in;
by their organizing, praying and singing, they have made themselves and the dream of non-
discrimination impossible for opponents to ignore and possible for those marginalized to
dream. Give us such leaders always, Lord. Let the cry for justice always be heard in our land
until, by your gracious will, your children live together in freedom, justice, and equality.

                                                 17
For this time of pandemic: O almighty and merciful God, with whom are the issues of life and
death: Grant us, we beseech thee, help and deliverance in this time of grievous sickness and mor-
tality, and sanctify to us this affliction, that in our sore distress we may turn our hearts unto thee;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. (from The Scottish Book of Common Prayer of 1929)
For those in harm’s way and for all first responders: especially Tim, David, Edward, Jared,
Ryan, Joey, Cody, Josh, Clay, Andy, Robert, Curt, Jordan, Kristen, Christopher, Tyler
For Peace: Oh God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your son.
Look now with compassion on the entire human family; and particularly this part of the family, in
the United States, and those in our nation’s capital; take away the arrogance and hatred which in-
fect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through
our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all na-
tions and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our
Lord.
For those celebrating birthdays: Cordelia Morris (4/4), Brad Lochlear (4/14), Chloe Scott
(4/16)
For those celebrating anniversaries:
For all those who have died, especially Paul Whear and Williams Evans. Holy God, holy and
mighty, holy and immortal, keep in your special care these, our beloved. Wipe away the tears of
those whose grief runs deep. Help us to encourage each other throughout this troubled life. Keep
us steadfast in faith, constant in hope and ardent in love and bring us all into that place you have
prepared in your heavenly kingdom.
For those who mourn: Most merciful God, whose wisdom is beyond our understanding: Deal
graciously with Tara and all those who mourn. Surround them with your love, that they may not be
overwhelmed by their loss, but have confidence in your goodness, and strength to meet the days to
come; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
