As many of you know there was a meeting of the archdiocese, Loyola University, the Jesuit community and
representatives of St Ignatius parish on Wednesday, June 23 in the parish rectory to discuss the plan for mov-
ing forward on proposal for the parish campus to be used for a mission center. We are grateful for the people
who attended the meeting devoting their time and energy to discussing the potential for such a center. We
want to thank Bishop Mark Botosic, Deacon Gerry Keenan from Renew My Church, Wayne Magdziarz the
CFO of Loyola University, Janet Sisler the Vice President of Mission Integration at Loyola, Fr Richie Salmi,
SJ the rector of the Jesuit community, David VanZytveld, Director of Loyola’s Center for Urban Research and
Learning and Matt Connelly and Jeanne Wrenn from St Ignatius.
The primary goal of the meeting was to ascertain, especially now that the pandemic is beginning to wane,
whether Loyola University Chicago was in a better position to financially invest in such a project. While the
representatives from Loyola reiterated their willingness to contribute with programmatic aspects of the Mission
Center (e.g., faculty and student support on specific programs, etc.), Loyola cannot commit to being the finan-
cial anchor for the moment. Frankly, this was clearly not the response we had hoped to hear, and yet we can
appreciate the fact that the university lost millions of dollars last year due to the pandemic, particularly on ac-
count of lost housing revenue.
Everyone at the meeting continues to be interested in the dream of a mission center, because we all realize that
the purpose of “Renew My Church” was not just to re-size the footprint of the diocese but to re-invigorate the
church’s presence and outreach in Chicagoland. The challenge before us is significant: we need to develop an
in-depth mission center proposal in order to raise the money for sustaining the center. We need to create a
trustworthy institutional entity to channel donations. We need to prove to our partners that we indeed have a
financially secure and purpose driven mission center.
Though our initial hopes did not meet the reality presented to us by Loyola and the diocese, the meeting ended
with collaborative ideas generated to explore creative means to support the mission center. In the coming days
and weeks, we will be reaching out to people both for financial help as well as for ideas. If you are willing to
help in this regard – or know people who might be – please let us know as soon as possible.

Como muchos saben, hubo una reunión de la arquidiócesis, la Universidad de Loyola, la comunidad Jesuita y
representantes de la parroquia de San Ignacio el miércoles 23 de junio en la rectoría para discutir los planes
para avanzar la propuesta de utilizar los edificios de la parroquia para un centro de misión. Agradecemos a los

Agradecemos al Obispo Mark Botosic, Diacono Gerry Keenan de Renueva Mi Iglesia, Wayne Magdziarz el

El objetivo primordial de la reunión fue determinar, especialmente ahora que la pandemia esta pasando, si la
Universidad de Loyola Chicago estaba en una mejor posición financiera de invertir en este proyecto. Aunque
los representantes de Loyola reiteraron su voluntad de contribuir con los aspectos programáticos del Centro de
Misión (por ej., profesores y estudiantes apoyando programas específicos, etc.), Loyola no puede comprome-
terse en este momento en ser la base financiera. Honestamente, esta no era la respuesta que esperábamos oír,
aunque puedo entender el hecho que la universidad perdió millones de dólares el año pasado durante la pande-
mia, particularmente la falta de los ingresos de los dormitorios.
Todos en la reunión están interesados en el sueño del Centro de Misión, porque nos damos cuenta que el pro-
pósito de “Renueva Mi Iglesia” no es solamente achicar la cantidad de edificios de la diócesis sino revitalizar
la presencia de la Iglesia y su acción en el área de Chicago. El desafío enfrente nuestros es importante: necesi-
tamos desarrollar una propuesta completa para el centro de misión para recaudar dinero para sostener el centro.
Necesitamos crear una institución confiable para canalizar donaciones. Necesitamos demostrar a nuestros so-
cios que tenemos un centro de misión financieramente estable e impulsado por propósitos.
Aunque nuestras esperanzas iniciales no coincidieron con la realidad presentada por Loyola y la diócesis, la
reunión termino con ideas colaborativas creadas para explorar maneras creativas para apoyar el centro de mi-
sión, En lo próximos días y semanas, estaremos contactando gente para ayuda financiera y para ideas. Si la

The constitutional freedom of religion is the most inalienable and sacred of all human rights.

During his September 2015 visit to the United States, Pope Francis emphasized the importance of religious
freedom, saying in front of the White House that religious “freedom remains one of America’s most precious
possessions. And, as my brothers, the United States Bishops, have reminded us, all are called to be vigilant,
precisely as good citizens, to preserve and defend that freedom from everything that would threaten or com-
promise it.” Today, we celebrate the 245th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independ-
ence. When 13 British colonies broke from England. The Revolution began and many lives were lost. While
the Declaration does not mention Religious Freedom, it does say “that all men are created equal, that they are
endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit
of Happiness.” You can argue that those rights would include one’s ability to worship as they want without
interference from anyone. It was not until the Constitution was written in 1787, ratified in 1788 and took ef-
fect on March 4, 1789, that Religious Freedom was guaranteed. As we celebrate let us be ever vigilant to
make sure that the freedom to practice one’s religion continues. We are called as citizens of the United States
to vote for those individuals who will govern us. Let us choose wisely that elected officials reflect our Catho-
lic beliefs including the sanctity of life.
IGNATIAN SERVICES
It is hard to believe that 2021 is half over! We are grateful for having survived the pandemic. At this time
none of our volunteers or clients fell victim to the Covid 19 virus. We attribute this to vigilance on the part of
everyone working or coming to the pantry. We are still wearing masks until the younger members of the com-
munity are able to receive their vaccines. However, we still have the shadow of closure over our heads. As
this bulletin goes to press, we do not know the future of the food pantry. We have been in discussions with
those of the community working on the Mission Center. We have also talked with Catholic Charities to see if
they would be willing to take us under their guidance. Regardless, we hope to be able to continue serving our
neighbors in need and we hope you will continue to support us!
Remember we are all Ignatian Services.

Constitución en 1787, se ratificó en 1788 y entró en vigor el 4 de marzo de 1789 que se garantizó la Libertad
Religiosa. Mientras celebramos, estemos siempre vigilantes para asegurarnos de que continúe la libertad de
practicar la propia religión. Somos llamados como ciudadanos de los Estados Unidos a votar por aquellos indi-
viduos que nos gobernarán. Elijamos sabiamente que los funcionarios electos reflejen nuestras creencias cató-
licas, incluida la santidad de la vida.
