Academics
Course: HIST 4688: Shanghai: Window on
     Modern China
     Credits: 3 upper-division credit hours

The 3-week course will start in Boulder and
end with two weeks in Shanghai. The
Shanghai component will consist of two hours
of class discussion and 1 to 2 field trips,
including lectures, each day. In addition to our
time in Shanghai, we will travel to nearby
Shaoxing, another key city in modern Chinese
 history.

You will gain a strong appreciation for both the
content of modern Chinese history and for how
that history is remembered and made use of in
China today. You’’ learn the ways Shanghai, as
a key site in modern China, has constantly re-
invented itself in tandem with the dramatic
transformation of the country as a whole over
 the course of modern history.
