WELCOME BACK!!
With the start of another academic year, comes the inevitable staff departures and arrivals. We
are able to welcome back Mr Allon, who has sealed his transfer back from Pent Valley. Unfortu-
nately, Mr Harris has left our department, to join up with the PE Department at Simon Langton
Boys School in Canterbury. No doubt we’ll come into contact with him with one of our many
County Cup or friendly fixtures over the year.
The boys are all looking very smart in the new style PE Kit (Implemented from Sept 2009). There
have been a few issues with deliveries, but the new kit is very good and
makes the boys look professional in lessons
as well as when facing other schools for
fixtures. Please remember whether you
require the Indoor White Kit or the Outdoor
Football/Rugby kit for your lessons.
Finally, make sure you keep an eye out for
the Extra Curricular clubs that are running
throughout the year, during lunch times and after school. As previously, we are offering many
different sports and activities, across all the age groups.
However, with the new rota of form times and lunches, it’s important you know when you need to
be with your form.
Young Sporting Ambassadors
On 16th September, Will Mainwaring and Bradley Goodsell (Yr10)
attended the Young Ambassadors Conference at Twickenham
Rugby Stadium.
They will be representing the Shepway SSP at various events
throughout the year, promoting the Olympic and Paralympic values:
Respect, Excellence, Friendship, Determination, Courage,
Inspiration and Equality.
They spent the day in workshops, lead by GB
swimmer, Adam Whitehead (pictured), where they
gained an awareness
and understanding of
the roles and
responsibilities of
being a YA.

FOOTBALL Dec 2010
2010/11 SEASON
The football season started well for all age groups, with big wins in their respective County Cup
competitions as well as the usual dominance in the District Leagues.
After some strong Trials held for each age group, some new faces forced their way into the squads,
whilst some previous squad members were able to show how they have developed over the course
of the Summer Holidays. All pointed towards a good season for all year groups.
The U14s were first to play with their 15-0 win against Hartsdown in the County Cup. This game
gave us a chance for our boys to adopt some unfamiliar positions, in preparation for their assault
onto finally winning the County Cup. This continued with victories over
Dover College and Archbishops, to set up a tie with Simon Langton from
Canterbury (who beat us in the Semi Finals in Yr7).
Mr Beale’s U15 team overcome a strong North School team 3-1 in their 1st
Round. This was a great result given the fact that the North beat us 10-0
last season!! Unfortunately, they were beaten 4-2 by The Marsh Academy
in the next round.
The Yr7s started off their Harvey careers with a convincing 9-0 win against Pent Valley in the
league, thanks to a Man of the Match Performance from Aidan Sharp and 4 goals from Jay Critcher.
On the same night, the U14s made it a double victory for HGS over their local rivals, with a 10-1
win, with victories for the U16s & U13s and a draw for the U15s to follow.
The league campaigns for each age group continued with good results and promising
performances.
The Yr7s came close to securing the District League at their first attempt, only missing out with a
loss to Marsh Academy in the last game. It was a different story for the U14s however, who
convincingly won the league again. This time they won all 4 games, scoring 35 goals and conceding
only the once. This was helped along the way by the battle between Mitchell Dyos and Ronan Tag-
gart who are currently on top of the scoring charts with 20 and 14 goals respectively.
The U13s carried on their promising season last year, to be on the brink of winning their league
(awaiting results from the other schools), as are the U16s.
The Yr7 team progressed to the last 16 of the County Cup, but were unfortunate not to progress
further, after being defeated by a strong Ursuline College side 4-2.
Hard luck in the County Cup competitions was a common theme for this season, with the Yr11s
losing in both their competitions by the odd goal to Herne Bay High and Welling School, as did the
Yr8 team who were beaten 1-0 by Dane Court.
There were also various opportunities for our B Teams to play some fixtures, with all the boys
involved performing well, earning some great wins.
The end of Term 2 saw the annual District 5 aside competition, hosted by Pent Valley.
In a snow affected week, the Yr8s were the only team who were able to play their competition on
their scheduled date. The A team were able to progress into the Semi Finals, where they were beat-
en. Unfortunately the B Team were unable to progress out of their tight group.
The Yr7 competition was hastily reorganised for a couple of weeks after the scheduled date, in or-
der for the winners to qualify for the regional finals in January.
After a frantic time rushing round in organizing our teams on the morning of the competition, both
teams had a slow start in their groups, but managed to get through into the semi finals. As there
were only 3 schools entered, it meant that we both faced Pent Valley. The B Team were unlucky in
defeat 1-0 whilst the A team managed to win &and make the final. Unfortunately, they were unable
to breach the Pent Valley B team’s defence as it went to penalties. Even though Jacob Bowers
managed to save 3 of their spot kicks, we were unable to convert ours, ending up losing 2-1.

The Staff Football Team, currently on a 3 year unbeaten run, added 2 more names to the
long list of teams defeated, with wins against Marsh Academy and Brockhill staff teams.
As has now become expected, the weather on the day of the Marsh Academy game was
horrible. Gail force winds didn’t help Keeper Norman’s normally perfect delivery from his
hands, whilst the almost sheet like rain made it difficult for everyone to control the ball well
(for some of us, it was a welcome excuse for our poor touches). At various points of the
game, Striker Lyng could have been mistaken for treading water whilst making his “runs”
out to the channel balls that our full backs played.
Going in at half time at 2-1, the weather calmed down for a short period. In this time, the
Harvey team were able to take control, with Walton adding to his first half header and 30
yard “screamer” with another header for his Hat-Trick whilst Stevenson added another long
range effort. Marsh were able to pull 2 goals back, as we began to rotate our subs so that
no one would end up ill whilst stood on the sidelines.
Harvey Staff 4 Marsh Academy Staff 3
A couple of weeks later (enough time for the stiffness to disappear) the Harvey staff
travelled over to Brockhill for a new challenge to their unbeaten run. With a rather young
looking Brockhill Staff team (a couple of 6th formers had been recruited) & a pitch expected
only at a Country Park, the Harvey team went behind. This only spurred the Harvey boys on
however, as they went onto score 5 unanswered goals (Walton x2, Cowling, Lyng and
Stevenson). A perfectly worked set piece ended the Harvey scoring, with there being only
enough time for a Brockhill consolation.
The run continues. Bring on the Grovellers and The Prefects in Term 2. . .

FOOTBALL Dec 2010
SENIOR FOOTBALL
The Senior Football season started in week 2 of the Term, with varying success for our 3 Senior
teams. The 1st XI lost narrowly to last season’s title winners, Tunbridge Wells. The 2nd XI were
beaten by St Georges, whilst Mr Morgan led the 3rd XI to an away win at QES.
Next up were the annual games against the Old Harvians Association. The Old Boys came out on
top in both fixtures, teaching the current crop of boys a thing or two as they did.
In the 2nd week of the season, the 1st XI and 2nd XI both scored their first wins, 2-0 v. Borden and
7-0 v. QES respectively. However the 3rd XI were brought back down to earth heavily with an 8-1
defeat.
As the season progressed, the 2nd XI’s good start continued, whilst the 3rd XI’s poor fortunes didn’t
change with further defeats. Going into the biggest game of the season for both teams (2nd XI v.
3rd XI), the 2nd XI had won 3 in a row, whilst the 3rd’s were coming off the back of 11-2 defeat
against Maidstone Grammar.
The Harvey Derby game was very close throughout the first half, with the score 2-1 to the 2nd XI at
half time. With the early award of a penalty by Referee Castle to the 3rd XI, Tom Bean had the
chance to level things, but shot over. This turned the game with the game ending 6-1.
The season continued with mixed fortunes for all sides.
The 1st XI have had a rather disappointing season, with the players that could have been at their
disposal. They only managed 1 more victory (6-4 against Rainham Mark) with poor performances &
discipline against the likes of QES (4-4 from being 4-1 up), Maidstone Grammar (1-5) & Oakwood
Park (4-7) have left them towards the lower ends of the table.
The 3rd XI managed to pick up a vital victory (2-1 against Borden Grammar) which hopefully will be
enough to see they don’t finish bottom of the league, but were also beaten heavily by the likes of
Ursuline (10-2) & Ursuline College (6-2).
The 2nd XI were riding high in their league, after going 4 games unbeaten with wins against Norton
Knatchbull (5-0) & Oakwood Park (3-1), but unfortunately that came to end against Borden
Grammar with a 3-1 defeat. This lead onto further defeats, which leaves them solidly mid-table, but
only 6 points ahead of the 3rd XI.
The cup fortunes were better for our 1st and 2nd XI than our junior sides (although this was as a
result of various byes and walk-overs). The 1stXI were big victors in the County Cup with a 5-1 win
against St Simon Stock, which saw them drawn against Astor of Hever in the 3rd Round, who had
to concede the game as they were unable to play by the designated date. This has seen them
reach the Quarter Finals stage.
A heavy 7-0 victory for the 2nd XI against QES in Round 1, saw them progress to the Quarter Fi-
nals. Both theses Quarter Finals are to be played in the first few weeks of Term 3.
The biggest game of the Senior football calendar was organised for the last day of term however,
when the current Prefect Body had their annual challenge against the Staff Team. The Staff team
were unbeaten since 2005 against the Prefects (when Mr Walton, playing as a Prefect at that time,
saved a penalty from Mr Stevenson and helped the Prefects onto an easy 5-0 win).
Rumours are that the Prefect team were running scared from the mighty Staff Team, so pushed for
the cancellation due to the frost.

RUGBY
The Rugby season started early in Term 1 for the U15s and 1st
XV with their Daily Mail National Cup competitions.
The U15s were victorious in Round 1 against Dover Grammar
22-10, which led them to facing Norton Knatchbull in 2nd
Round.
Unfortunately, due to a variety of reasons, we weren’t at full
strength when we faced our rivals from Ashford and came out
on the wrong end of 48-5 defeat.
The 1st XV’s 1st Round opponents were Norton Knatchbull,
who hired out Ashford Rugby Club for the fixture. On a very
soggy Friday evening, the kickers were key for both teams, with a 7-3 defeat.
This put us into the Plate competition, where we faced Chaucer Technology College in
Round 2. Another Friday evening fixture, but with a different result this time, as Harvey came
out 32-0 winners.
In the 3rd Round, the 1st XV then faced Norton Knatchbull again, the school who beat them
in the Cup.
Another close game was settled again by the kickers, with the Ashford school coming out on
top 10-7.
The Local Leagues and County Cups start in Term 3, so keep a look out for the fixtures and
teamsheets. Remember to also bring your kit for the evenings we have training.

BADMINTON
This year saw the first District Badminton League, in which we entered our U14s. We were
undefeated in all our games against Marsh Academy (10-5), Pent Valley (10-3) & Folkestone
Academy (12-3). A very good effort from our boys.
