WELCOME TO SCIENCE FOR 2021 New Staff members The Science faculty warmly welcomes Mrs Amanda Kaur and Ms Tina Frasca on staff this year. Both teachers bring a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to their classes and our staffroom. We look forward to working with them. Writing in Science “Why do I need to write in Science? It’s not English class you know!” This question is heard through many a science lesson and it raises a very important point. Writing is as integral in Science as it is in any other area of study. Time spent on writing in science is a considerable investment; not only does it reinforce literacy skills for life but it secures learning in science and prepares pupils for future assessments of their understanding of science concepts. Research suggests that writing in science is one of the most complex tasks for a student as it involves: • thinking processes – linking ideas and information and organising them logically; • formal language for specific audiences and purposes – examinations, controlled assessment, presentations etc; • reflecting on their own and each other’s writing through peer and self-assessment to clarify thoughts and eliminate misunderstanding. As a Science faculty, we are absolutely privileged to be able to have our very own Ms Heywood appointed in the role of Curriculum Writing Specialist. Ms Heywood has already been working with our faculty to support students and staff in developing effective writing skills as a communication tool in science. All Stage 4 students have had the opportunity to explicitly work with a sample assessment task question that focuses on how their writing can show understanding on a deeper level. The upcoming assessments in Years 7-9 will incorporate a similar style question for students to demonstrate their growth in this skill. We are excited by the opportunity to work with Mrs Heywood in her new role. Year 7 Introduction to Science We have welcomed our Year 7 students with many of them already being very busy in the lab learning to use laboratory apparatus and safe work practices. Students have been acquiring their Bunsen burner licence, a rite of passage for all our new cohort. We are very proud of Year 7 for achieving this license, particularly for those who had never even lit a match before! Keep up the curiosity Year 7. Year 10 Stop Motion Students have been demonstrating their understanding of DNA replication processes using stop motion technology. They enjoyed working as a group and were keen to share their technical expertise with their peers to create masterpieces! Year 12 Biology Students have once again been treated to some sophisticated experiences in the Biology lab with the AMGEN experience. With a two-week loan of equipment from Sydney University, they have been able to genetically engineer bacteria to make it glow a beautiful fluorescent red. Most schools do not have the privilege of being able to access such highly specialised equipment to conduct first-hand investigations in their own school. These practical experiences allow students to participate in bringing the concepts presented in the syllabus to life. A huge thank you to Ms Heywood and Mr Rump, Science Teachers and Ms Kleinman, Science Assistant for the massive task of collecting, preparing and returning the $30,000 worth of equipment. Year 12 were very lucky to have had this opportunity and really appreciate your efforts. Year 12 Biology students will be attending the Museum of Human Diseases early next term. Agriculture Agriculture continues to be a dynamic part of the Science faculty. Year 12 students joined the Year 12 Geography class on a cross-curricular excursion to complete their Farm Product Study at Scarborough Wines, Pokolbin. The product study focussed on grapes. Agriculture students were able to learn about the management of the vineyard from the pruning and trellising of the vines, irrigation and mechanical harvesting of the grapes and processing of grapes to produce wine. continued next page Page 8 www.pennanthil-h.schools.nsw.edu.au @PennantHillsHS Pennant Hills High School
SCIENCE 2021 continued from previous page Students loved the unique perspective of wine production and farm management provided by Jerome, Winery Manger who detailed how research and using cutting edge technology gave farmers a more efficient method of production and marketing which is imperative to the success of Australian agriculture. Year 11 Agriculture students will be going to the Camden Environmental Education Centre for their farm case study early in Term 2. Students will be investigating aspects of beef cattle farming and the development of the beef cattle industry in recent years. Mrs Newton, Agriculture Teacher continues to have the ag plot open at least one lunchtime each week for interested students. All students who have an interest in agriculture are welcome to come down. Keep an eye out on the daily notices for opening times. Upcoming Events…… Stages 4 and 5 Assessment Tasks During Week 9, all students in Stages 4 and 5 will complete their first Science assessment task. Years 7-9 will have a ‘Working Scientifically’ task which assesses students on their ability to process scientific information, creating, reading and interpreting graphs and diagrams, utilising the scientific method, identifying variables and using data. Students should check with their teachers for the exact date and will require a pen, pencil, ruler and calculator for their task. Year 10 students are currently working on a research task with a focus on natural selection and evolution, and the role humans play in the genetic diversity of organisms in the environment. This task is due in Week 10. Science and Engineering Challenge 32 Year 10 students have been invited to participate in the Annual Science and Engineering Challenge at Sydney Olympic Park next Monday. Students will participate in a variety of challenges including bridge building, hovercraft design, code-breaking, design and manipulation of artificial limbs amongst other exciting challenges. Good Luck Year 10! Easter Show Excursion Stage 6 Agriculture students are joining Textiles and Food Technology students on a field study excursion. Students will be looking at different breeds of sheep and cattle, and technology on farms, to support their elective study ‘Farming in the 21st Century’. Melodie Frida, Head Teacher Science Supporting your teen in making new friends A new year, especially at a new school, brings a range of challenges for children. One of the biggest is forming new friendships. As your child enters the teenage years, friends will become more important. Positive, accepting and supportive friendships are an important part of the journey to adulthood for your child. Friendships can be a network of great support and can offer protection against negative peer relationships such as bullies. Learning positive friendship skills can help them socially so they feel happier and more confident. Building and nurturing strong friendships is particularly important as, during their teenage years, your child is figuring out who they are beyond the family. As a parent, knowing how to support your child in this can be tricky to navigate. Tips for helping your child build new friendships: 1. Be a good role-model. Let your child see and hear how you build and maintain friendships. 2. Remind them other students will also be looking for new friends 3. Practise conversation starters. Sit down and help your child practise some simple conversation topics that they can try when they sit next to a new person. 4. Help them learn how to spot other children in class, or in the playground, who might need a friend 5. Ask open-ended questions about their friends. Such as “What do you like about Ross?” 6. Let your child know that new friends are welcome in your home. Encourage your child to invite new friends over, or be ready to transport your child to their house. Help your child explore new opportunities. Learning a musical instrument, trying a new sport or joining a drama class are great ways for your child to meet new people and get involved in school activities. STUDENT ABSENCES There are many sound reasons why students may not be able to attend school on occasions, including illness and family emergencies. The Department of Education requires that all valid absences be supported by written advice from a parent or caregiver within seven days of the student’s return to school. We are required to record as unjustified any absence not supported by a note from a parent/ caregiver. If your child is going to be absent from school for any reason, please phone the office as soon as possible to let us know and, most importantly, follow up with a note on your student’s first day back at school. Your cooperation will assist us in encouraging appropriate patterns of student attendance. Page 9 www.pennanthil-h.schools.nsw.edu.au @PennantHillsHS Pennant Hills High School

Students who do not have a mask will not be allowed to travel on sport buses and will instead, remain at school. Knockout Sports Congratulations to the girls’ Knockout Volleyball and Touch Football teams who have progressed to the next round after winning their games. Good luck to the volleyball team as they play Mackellar Girls High School and the touch football team as they play Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College in the next round.
