‘Love and Kisses Covid19’ Bonkers. Is what this is. Mixed media and collage on canvas The 2nd large work that is a response to COVID19. Framed: approx 152cm x 102cm Spot the instances of ‘coupling’ and the myriad of $12,500.00 critters waiting to be discovered. The pots Or from $1,250 per month with Art Money themselves look like they are social distancing.
‘Love in the time of Covid19’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper UNFRAMED: approx 57cm x 160cm $10,000.00 Or from $1,000 per month with Art Money So at the end of February 2020, things ground to a halt. I was lucky to get to Singapore to open a show earlier in the month with restrictions starting to be put into place in Singapore as we arrived and then in Sydney soon after returning home. All my art plans for the year went south as did many people’s travel plans, jobs, lives and finances. I consider myself extremely fortunate that, in times of crisis – nothing for it but to stay home and paint. This is my first painted response to COVID19 completed sometime in March…It’s a long image in the manner of a Chinese scroll painting but filled with all sorts of beasties waiting to be discovered. Spot the cryptid hiding somewhere.
‘Love and Kisses Covid19: Ching Chong 1’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper NB: this image is unframed. Image size: 38cm x 37cm $1,900.00 Or from $190 per month with Art Money This extension of my original ‘Ching Chong’ series from 2014 is my response to increased racism Asians have experienced globally because of COVID19. From stares in the street and outright racial abuse and violence, it’s a depressing sign of our times.
‘Love and Kisses Covid19: Ching Chong 2’ Watercolour and gouache on fragments of antique Chinese account books, affixed to Arches paper Image size: 38cm x 37cm Framed. $2,100.00 Or from $210 per month with Art Money This takes the Anti Chinese sentiment one step further: blue and white Chinese export porcelain has been coveted for centuries. Nearly every grand house has a ‘Chinese room’ filled with priceless porcelain, textiles and wall coverings from the ‘Orient’. However, it was probably only in the 20th Century that an Asian would have been welcomed into such a house as a social equal.
‘Love and Kisses Covid19: Ching Chong 3’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 32cm x 40.5cm Framed $2,100.00 Or from $210 per month with Art Money In my research of Chinese porcelain and the very colourful Peranakanware, I found that motifs, colours and even markings were rigid and unchanged for decades – the skills passed down through generations of artists. My Peranakan COVID-ware have definitely been tampered with: vampire bats, Pterodactyls, Big foot and mutant stag beetles come out to play and the coronavirus image has replaced some of the florals in borders. There can be beauty in the madness.
‘Batik Floral’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 39cm x 56cm Framed $2,400.00 Or from $240 per month with Art Money A COVID story: This image was originally a blue and white floral on pure white paper. Until one day, while setting up a photo shoot, I spilled an entire cup of black coffee over the painting. Nothing for it but to repaint completely. But… I always wanted to explore the image in the batik style and colours that inspired me for this piece in the first instance. Ta da!
‘Love and Kisses COVID19 2’ Watercolour and gouache on canvas 25cm x 30cm Unframed but ready to hang $1,400.00 Or from $140 per month with Art Money In the coronavirus night garden, strange things happen.
‘Cursed Banksia’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper UNFRAMED: 38.5cm x 23.5cm $990.00 Or from $99 per month with Art Money This image was made in July 2020… when it became apparent that things were not going to get back to how they used to be any time soon. We were weeks into lockdown, people were already fed up and struggling and the daily news was mostly around numbers and blamestorming. However, we survived the toilet paper wars so that is a good thing
‘Willow pattern in the time of COVID19’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 19.5cm x 27.5cm Framed size: 34.5cm x 43cm $900.00 Or from $90 per month with Art Money I made a series of small 'willow pattern' inspired works introducing a number of strange beasties. This image was made in early October 2020. Although some states in Australia are starting to open up, many of us are still in lockdown and we are definitely going stir crazy. For the past 6 months in my studio I've been listening to podcasts of cryptid sightings and scary stories so of course they had to make it into a painting. This sort of sums up 2020 for me: can you spot the bigfoot, wolfman, ufo, pterodactyl, sharks, tyrannosaurus rex and the loch ness monster? I guess we are just missing the murder hornets and a plague of locusts/frogs.
The following images were made between July and September 2020. They are an amalgamation of ideas and images I have had in my head for a number of years and finally committed to paper. They are unashamedly bonkers, a little disturbing and hopefully, amusing as well. All works are signed and framed
‘Cursed dahlia - Feed me Seymour’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 14cm x 19cm Framed. Frame size: 28.5cm c 33.5cm $450.00 Little Shop of Horrors meets William Morris, meets batik and the blue and white pea shoot pattern.
‘Cursed slipper orchid - Dogman’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 14cm x 19cm Framed. Frame size: 28.5cm c 33.5cm $450.00 Slipper orchid meets a tiger-painted dogman and chaos ensues
‘Savage cabbage 3’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 14cm x 19cm Framed. Frame size: 28.5cm c 33.5cm $450.00 I decided against putting anything else in this image – the eyes in the centre are creepy enough as they are.
‘Cursed dahlia – tiger face’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 14cm x 19cm Framed. Frame size: 28.5cm c 33.5cm $420.00 A traditional Chinese Child’s tiger hat design meets a dahlia in a lotus teacup
‘Cursed peony with weevil’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 14cm x 19cm Framed. Frame size: 28.5cm c 33.5cm $450.00 My favourite colour combination: pink and orange, and an unsuspecting weevil.
‘Cursed Kumara with NSW marsh frog’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 14cm x 19cm Framed. Frame size: 28.5cm c 33.5cm $450.00 NSW marsh frog meets the NZ sweet potato: kumara.
‘Mandrake’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 14cm x 19cm Framed. Frame size: 28.5cm c 33.5cm $450.00 I was channeling medieval herbal manuscripts rather than Harry Potter here. Dogs were commonly used to uproot a mandrake plant: any harm would befall the dog, not the human telling it what to do.
‘Nian and red lantern’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 14cm x 19cm Framed. Frame size: 28.5cm c 33.5cm $450.00 Nians are Mythical Chinese monsters who rise out of the sea and hunt children in villages just before the Lunar New Year. Red things such as lanterns, banners and noisy firecrackers are employed to keep them away (they are afraid of red), and this is where the tradition of Red in CNY celebrations originated. This monster was based on a temple guardian, spotted in the Met museum, NYC. Can you see the child in the window?
‘Pterodactyl: Willow pattern in the time of COVID19. Are you freaking KIDDING me?!’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 14cm x 19cm Framed. Frame size: 28.5cm c 33.5cm $450.00 With respect to Calamityware.com.
‘Cryptid: Willow pattern in the time of COVID19. Don’t go outside!!!!’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 14cm x 19cm Framed. Frame size: 28.5cm c 33.5cm $450.00 Been listening to waaay too many bigfoot podcasts. I have no idea what I would do if a 9 ft beastie looked through my bedroom window.
‘Monkey see, Monkey got eaten’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 14cm x 19cm Framed. Frame size: 28.5cm c 33.5cm $450.00 The goliath tigerfish lives in jungle rivers. It eats whatever it can catch. Careful, it can jump. And yeh, I saw it first on ‘River monsters’.
‘Nian in red on the hunt for more children’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 14cm x 19cm Framed. Frame size: 28.5cm c 33.5cm $450.00 Can you see the two figures looking out of the window?
‘Did Caterpillar find a cure? Lizard needs to know. Just don’t eat the mushrooms… mmmmkay?’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 14cm x 19cm Framed. Frame size: 28.5cm c 33.5cm $450.00 At the time of writing, the artist felt these two probably had a legitimate claim to a cure… If it all goes south then I guess the next best thing would be to eat the Fly agaric mushrooms and go beserker, Viking styleee.
‘After another facebook stoush, frog needs to chill. Mantis is still angry though and butterfly ‘is not getting involved’…’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 14cm x 19cm Framed. Frame size: 28.5cm c 33.5cm $450.00 And the angry exchange was all about toilet paper….
‘Cursed pitcher plants with murder hornet and poison dart frog’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 14cm x 19cm Framed. Frame size: 28.5cm c 33.5cm $450.00 Just when you thought 2020 couldn’t get any worse…. Murder hornets!
‘Cursed bonsai apple in a Chinese Sancai pot’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 14cm x 19cm Framed. Frame size: 28.5cm c 33.5cm $450.00 Don’t eat the fruit bro!
‘Teacup plant’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 14cm x 19cm Framed. Frame size: 28.5cm c 33.5cm $450.00 Not a COVID image but definitely batty… Inspired by ‘Through the looking glass’ and Venetian glass baubles, famous the world over.
‘Hellbeast’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 14cm x 19cm Framed. Frame size: 28.5cm c 33.5cm $450.00 A hellbeast of my own making: it has the antlers of a traditional Chinese dragon. The wispy shreds of a long-disintegrated shroud are made to look like the clouds/wisps of fog that usually accompany dragons on porcelain vessels. It has captured a small wood sprite – planning to keep it in the dripping troll skull.
‘Ghostly procession: return of the crusaders’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 13cm x 18cm Framed. Frame size: 28.5cm c 33.5cm $450.00 Painted in September 2020. We had started re-watching ‘Game of Thrones’… and of course the white walkers’ march happened… In October, I’m feeling it might be a wry visual comment about political rallies….
‘Yum yum peach bum – because I can’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 13cm x 18cm Framed. Frame size: 28.5cm c 33.5cm $390.00 Painted in September 2020. Completely batty by then but looking forward to peach season… you’ve always got to have something to look forward to!
‘Nian 1’ Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper Image size: 12cm x 16cm Framed. Frame size: 23.5cm c 32.5cm $420.00 Spot the tiny figure peering out of the upper window. The red lantern has been hung to deter the beast. People would light fireworks, hang red banners, wear red clothing and eat red food – to scare away the Nian that would come to hunt children before Lunar New Year… and the tradition of red things and firecrackers for Lunar New Year came to be…
AUCTION IMAGES: The following images were made as a response to the increased racism Asians everywhere have been experiencing during the pandemic. As a Chinese adoptee, racism is not new to me but even at 54, I struggle to contain my response to it as I fought for decades to have my experiences acknowledged and even believed. Things are different now but we still have work to do. All proceeds from the sale of these paintings (except shipping costs), will be donated to the Post Adoption Resource Centre (PARC), part of the Benevolent Society, of which I’ve sat on the advisory committee since 2014.
