FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Fr. Bob’s Briefs
Throughout the Gospel of John, Jesus makes a number of “I am” statements and sayings. To
be exact, there are seven “I am” sayings in the Gospel of John. The number seven itself, in
addition to the seven images used, are all very deep in their symbolism, both theologically and
sacramentally. In all seven “I am” sayings, Jesus declares His divinity and Messiahship. Last
week, we heard the fourth “I am” saying,
when Jesus says “I am the Good
Shepherd.” This week, we hear the
seventh, and final, “I am” saying in the
Johanine Gospel when Jesus says “I am
the Vine.”
Jesus calling Himself the Vine is very significant,
and filled with allegorical meaning in the Bible. In the Old
Testament, Israel is often depicted as God’s choice vine,
nurtured with care, but only yielding sour, poor fruit. Once
again, Jesus replaces Jewish institutions and feasts, and now
describes Himself as the vine of the New Israel. United to
Christ, Christians produce good fruit pleasing to God the
Father. In this unique image, we see branches full of large
fruit emerging from Christ the Vine, specifically His pierced
side. This image illustrates an important theological
teaching of our Catholic faith; for we understand and believe
that the Church comes forth from the pierced side of Christ,
as branches grow from a vine, as this image portrays.
Teaching on this passage, when Jesus says “I am the vine,”
the great Doctor of the Church, St. Augustine writes, “He
says this as being the Head of the Church, of which we are
His members, the Man Christ Jesus; for the vine and the
branches are of the same nature. When He says, I am the
true vine, He does not mean really a vine; for He is only
called so metaphorically, not literally.” Let us always stay
united to Jesus the Vine, so that we may have a share in His
life and produce good fruit in our lives.
Congratulations to our 2nd graders and all the children from our parochial school and religious education
program who celebrated their First Holy Communion this Saturday, May 2, 2015. Thank you to Mr. Manetti,
Mr. Porod, and all the teachers and catechists for all their preparation, assistance, and guidance that they have
given to our children throughout the year, including the retreat, in preparation for First Holy Communion. In the
sanctuary, you see an image of Jesus the Good Shepherd, with lots of little lambs around the Good Shepherd.
Each lamb represents one of our First Communicants. This is a very nice symbol that teaches us about the Mass
and the Eucharist. At Mass, Jesus the Good Shepherd gathers His lambs together in one flock. Then, Jesus leads
His flock to be fed in good pasture, which is His Body and Blood, in the Eucharist. We pray that our children
always be gathered around the altar of Christ and fed with the Eucharist each and every Sunday.
Our lighting company is making good progress in the production of new LED lights for the church. They
have taken down some fixtures for measurement and custom design. Soon, a few test samples will arrive here
and be installed in the church, so that we can see how they look and work in our space. After that, it will take
about a month for our lighting company to manufacture all the lights for the church. Installation of all the lights
will follow soon afterwards. God willing, and imploring the intercession of our good patron St, Joseph, patron of
all thing construction and building related, we hope to have new lights in the church shortly.
Next week, we will have a second collection for Catholic Charities. I heard Msgr. Boland, director of
Catholic Charities, talking recently on the transfer of the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Casimir to Catholic
Charities, and how this new location will help Catholic Charities better serve the poor in the Chicago Lawn area
and southwest side of the city. Msgr. Boland quoted a saying from the Venerable Mother Maria Kaupas, which
is a good saying for all of us to take to remember and live: “Always More. Always Better. Always with Love.”
We are beginning the month of May. Just a reminder, May is a month dedicated to our Blessed Mother.
Please take some time to pray the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or any other Marian prayers/devotion
everyday in May. May our Blessed Mother Mary, Undoer of Knots, help us with her maternal care, and St.

En todo el Evangelio de Juan, Jesús hace una serie de refranes diciendo: "Yo Soy". Para ser exac-
tos, hay siete "Yo Soy" en el Evangelio de Juan. El número siete, además de las siete imágenes, son
todos muy profundos en su simbolismo, tanto teológica y sacramentalmente. En los siete "Yo Soy",
Jesús declara su divinidad y mesianismo. La semana pasada escuchamos el cuarto "Yo Soy", cuando
Jesús dice: "Yo soy el buen Pastor." Esta semana, escuchamos la séptima y última, "Yo soy" que

parte de su vida y producir buenos frutos en nuestras vidas.
Felicitaciones a los niños del 2o grado y a todos los niños de
nuestra escuela parroquial y programa de educación religiosa
que celebraron su primera comunión este sábado, 2 de mayo de
2015. Gracias al Sr. Manetti, el Sr. Porod, y todos los profesores y catequistas, por toda la preparación, asistencia y
orientación que han dado a nuestros niños durante todo el año, incluyendo el retiro, en preparación para la Primera Co-

W całej Ewangelii według św. Jana, Jezus siedem razy wypowiada słowa: „Ja jestem” („Jam jest”).
Obok siedmiu opowieści, towarzyszących tym słowom, sama cyfra 7 również ma głębokie znaczenie
teologiczne i symboliczne. We wszystkich zdaniach rozpoczynających się od: „Ja jestem”, Pan
podkreśla Swoją boskość i posłannictwo. W zeszłym tygodniu usłyszeliśmy czwarte z tych zdań, w
którym Mesjasz stwierdza: „Ja jestem Dobrym Pasterzem”. Z kolei dzisiaj skupimy się na siódmym,
ostatnim zdaniu „Ja jestem” – „Ja jestem prawdziwym krzewem winnym”.
Powyższe stwierdzenie jest w Biblii
bardzo znaczące i przesycone alegorią. W
Starym Testamencie, Izrael często bywa
porównywany do zasadzonej przez Boga
szlachetnej latorośli winnej – troskliwie pielęgnowanej, lecz
wydającej jedynie marne, kwaśne owoce. Jezus po raz kolejny
obala żydowskie święta, nazywając Siebie winnym krzewem
Nowego Izraela. Chrześcijanie, zjednoczeni w Chrystusie,
wydają dobre, miłe Bogu Ojcu owoce. Załączony obraz
przestawia Pana jako winną latorośl, z której wyrastają gałęzie
brzemienne w dorodne owoce; chodzi tu zwłaszcza o Jego
przebity włócznią bok. Niniejszy obraz ukazuje ważną naukę
naszej katolickiej wiary. Wierzymy bowiem, iż Kościół wziął
swój początek z rany w boku Jezusa, tak jak gałęzie wyrastają z
winorośli. W Swoim komentarzu do Jezusowego stwierdzenia o
winnym krzewie, św. Augustyn (wielki Doktor Kościoła z IV / V
wieku) pisze, że Mesjasz używa tego porównania jako Głowa
Kościoła, którego my jesteśmy członkami. Bowiem i krzew i
gałęzie krzewu jednakiej są natury. Stwierdzenia: „Jestem
prawdziwym krzewem winnym” nie należy rozumieć dosłownie,
lecz jedynie metaforycznie. Pozostańmy zawsze zjednoczeni w
Chrystusie Winnym Krzewie, abyśmy mieli udział w życiu
wiecznym i sami wydawali obfite owoce na co dzień.
Pragnę pogratulować wszystkim tutejszym
drugoklasistom oraz uczestnikom Programu katechetycznego,
którzy wczoraj (sobota, 2 maja) przystąpili do I Komunii
Świętej. Dziękuję panu Manettiemu, panu Porodowi, wszystkim nauczycielom i katechetom za wsparcie, które w ciągu
minionego roku okazywali najmłodszym. W sanktuarium wisi obraz Jezusa Dobrego Pasterza, wokół którego gromadzą
się owieczki. Każda z tych owieczek to jedno z naszych dzieci pierwszokomunijnych. W tym pięknym obrazie kryje się
głęboka nauka o liturgii i Eucharystii. Podczas Mszy, Pan, nasz Dobry Pasterz, gromadzi Swoje owieczki w jednym
stadzie. Następnie, Jezus prowadzi Swoją trzodę na zielone pastwiska Swojego Ciała i Krwi w Eucharystii. Módlmy się,
aby nasze dzieci zawsze gromadziły się przy ołtarzu Chrystusa i co niedzielę przyjmowały Go do swoich serc.
Zatrudnieni przez nas oświetleniowcy dobrze sobie radzą z produkcją nowych, LED-owych żarówek dla parafii.

budowlanych), w najbliższej przyszłości nasz kościół będzie oświetlony na nowo.
Dochód z drugiej zbiórki w przyszłym tygodniu zostanie przeznaczony na wsparcie Catholic Charities –
zrzeszenia skupiającego ponad 160 organizacji charytatywnych na terenie całych Stanów Zjednoczonych. Dyrektor
organizacji, Monsignor Boland, potwierdził ostatnio, iż główna siedziba Zgromadzenia Zakonnego Sióstr św.
Kazimierza Królewicza została przekazana pod opiekę Catholic Charities Dzięki owej nowej lokalizacji, CC będzie
mogła lepiej służyć biednym na południowym zachodzie Chicago. Monsignor Boland przytoczył z tej okazji ulubione
powiedzenie założycielki Sióstr św. Kazimierza, Czcigodnej Matki Marii Kaupas, które my także powinniśmy sobie
wziąć do serca: „Zawsze więcej. Zawsze lepiej. Zawsze z miłosierdziem”.
