TOUR PROFILE

In celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the founding of Esperanza Azteca, Mexico’s
landmark music for social justice initiative that has led to the creation of more than 80
youth orchestras across the country, and in recognition of Mexico’s crescendo as the
fastest growing nation in the Americas-led movement of music for social change, The
Orchestra of the Americas travels to Mexico in 2019 for a coast-to-coast concert tour.

    RESIDENCE
The project, in collaboration with regional music initiatives and public-private
partnerships across Mexico, begins with a two-week training Residence Festival in
Puebla under the direction of Music Director Carlos Miguel Prieto, where 90 musicians
from across 25 countries of the Americas study with a faculty of world-class coaches from
top professional orchestras including the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Concertgebouw,
Berlin Philharmonic, Rome Opera, and Mariinsky Theatre Orchestras. The Residence
includes chamber performances throughout the community as part of the Puebla Ciudad
Musical Festival and culminates in two high-visibility orchestra concerts at Auditorio de
la Reforma and Catedral de Puebla.

    NATIONWIDE TOUR
Following Puebla, the Orchestra performs across Mexico in a range of the country’s top
venues including Palacio de Bellas Artes, Sala Nezahualcóyotl, Sala Plácido Domingo
del Conjunto Santander de Artes Escénicas, and Teatro del Bicentenario, as well as
in underserved and rural locations in Mexico’s interior. The Orchestra performs with
Grammy-winning superstar Gil Shaham in Ciudad de México, León, and Guadalajara,
performs and records with Argentinian piano virtuoso Ingrid Fliter in Ciudad de México
for Linn Records, in addition to leading concerts in Boca del Río, Celaya, Monterrey,
Morelia, Orizaba, San Luis Potosí, and Tlaxcala under the batons of Prieto and celebrated
Chilean conductor Paolo Bortolameolli of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

    COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
As part of its commitment to empowering young musical leaders to transform lives across
the Americas and beyond, The Orchestra of the Americas works with local orchestras
and choirs throughout the tour, including side-by-side concerts with Esperanza Azteca.
The Orchestra also offers workshops and community performances in alliance with
Conservatorio de las Rosas, Conservatorio Nacional, Fundación Música para la Vida,
and Escuela Superior de Música y Danza de Monterrey.

WELCOMES

Welfare and social equality are undoubtedly among the top priorities of this Administration.
The inclusion of young people from all walks of life, in particular from the most marginalized
communities, is vital to meeting these objectives. Education and music are invaluable tools in our
mission of social reconstruction, particularly when it comes to supporting the next generation.
Youth orchestras have an incomparable ability to reach, engage, and empower young people
across all social strata. Those who have had this experience prove themselves ready to assume
leadership roles in their civic lives as members of this community. In this spirit, proudly and with
open arms, we are pleased to welcome to our country 90 rising musical leaders from more than
25 nations of the Western Hemisphere that comprise The Orchestra of the Americas. World-class
education is not a privilege, it is a right. For this reason, we applaud the work of The Orchestra of
the Americas, which has come to embody the voice of a continental movement working to ensure
the future of music education in our Hemisphere, that every corner of Latin America is filled with
the joy of music. It is your important mission to perform concerts and lead educational workshops
in alliance with a multitude of public and private partners throughout Mexico. We wish you the
best in each of your experiences across our great nation.

                                    MARCELO LUIS EBRARD CASAUBÓN
SECRETARY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS | UNITED MEXICAN STATES

I am proud to welcome The Orchestra of the Americas to Mexico, and especially pleased to
recognize the great accomplishments of the 18 prodigious Mexican youths selected to represent
our country within this extraordinary hemispheric orchestra. Ten years ago, we had the vision that
ensemble music training could help to build a healthy social environment throughout Mexico. Our
goal at the time was to reach, engage, and empower our country’s most vulnerable youth from
coast to coast through the creation of orchestras. Today, as Secretary of Public Education, I could
not be more proud that The Orchestra of the Americas has selected Mexico as the host of its 2019
Residency and Concert Tour, a country that is now one of the leading promoters of social change
through music education. In addition, we celebrate a new pledge made by the President of Mexico,
Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to support and expand the continued growth of the nationwide
youth orchestra movement. The Orchestra of the Americas is an exemplary institution that shines
an international light on the important work of local educational programs to build productive and
      inclusive societies. Welcome!

                                    ESTEBAN MOCTEZUMA BARRAGÁN
SECRETARY OF PUBLIC EDUCATION | UNITED MEXICAN STATES

Puebla enjoys a rich and vivid cultural tradition, which is the prime vehicle for bridging and
stringing together a society, while diminishing the ideological barriers that cause conflicts between
nations. For this reason, it is a great pleasure for the people of Puebla to host one of the most
important ensembles representing the voice of the continent—The Orchestra of the Americas—
comprised of young musicians from over 25 countries in the Americas, under the leadership of
celebrated Mexican conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto. The Government of the State of Puebla is
looking forward to this impactful alliance, and to the music performances across Puebla that will
enrich the lives of its residents, showcasing the universal power of music to infuse the community
with a sense of unity and brotherhood. Welcome to Puebla!

                                                             GUILLERMO PACHECO PULIDO

MEXICO CRESCENDO TOUR - 28 June - 3 August 2019 - The Orchestra of the Americas
It is an honor for the Government of Nuevo León to host The Orchestra of the Americas and witness
the conclusion of its successful Mexico Tour. This extraordinary ensemble, which brings together
some of the most talented young musicians from 25 countries across the Americas, from Northern
Canada to Patagonia, fills us with its energy and human warmth. Our state is proud to be part of this
ambitious project, which was born in 2001 and is led by the talented Mexican conductor Carlos
Miguel Prieto. Nuevo León is pleased to showcase the brilliant work of 90 virtuosos who convey a
message of unity, friendship, community, and hope, something so necessary in our current times.
The Orchestra of the Americas seeks to excel, connect, and transform, and the people of Nuevo
León celebrate and share these values. The musicians show us in each performance that borders are
not synonymous with isolation, that our differences complement us, and that by working together
a better world is possible. Congratulations to The Orchestra of the Americas!

                                                    JAIME RODRÍGUEZ CALDERÓN
GOVERNOR | STATE OF NUEVO LEÓN

On behalf of the people of Tlaxcala, it is a great honor for me to welcome The Orchestra of the
Americas, joining our community for a celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Encounter
Between Two Cultures—a state-wide celebration commemorating the city’s importance in the
birth of modern Mexico. It gives us great joy that this world-class symphony orchestra, consisting of
the best young talents of the entire continent, visits this region of such diverse and mixed traditions,
allowing the audiences to reconcile with their historical roots and cultural legacy through music.

                                                                    MARCO MENA

It is an honor to welcome The Orchestra of the Americas to San Luis Potosí. The Orchestra’s
visit is a magnificent opportunity for the young musicians of our region, and for all those who
enjoy music, to broaden their horizons. Through creative exchange between the Orchestra and our
community, we hope our people will realize the power of music as a universal language, and that
this will lead to growing connections and to generating change. Similarly, we hope the Orchestra
Fellows enjoy learning about our culture and are equally enriched by this wonderful experience.

SECRETARY OF CULTURE | STATE OF SAN LUIS POTOSÍ

The Orchestra of the Americas has reinvented the symphony orchestra as a vehicle for social
inclusion and encourages a spirit of collaboration among nations, which is inspirational. We
applaud the Orchestra’s world premiere of “Tres Cuartos de Cien: tótem sinfónico para Canadá
y México” by the young Mexican composer Cristóbal MarYán. This piece celebrates 75 years of
diplomatic relations between Canada and Mexico. I can’t think of a better orchestra to give this
premiere. We hope that through music, this project inspires innovation in global development.

                                                                           DR. JESÚS SEADE
UNDERSECRETARY FOR NORTH AMERICA | SECRETARIAT OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

The US Embassy and Consulates in Mexico are proud to be sponsors of The Orchestra of the
Americas’ tour in Mexico. The Orchestra showcases the finest talent our countries have to offer,
while strengthening our cultural and bilateral ties. We can all relate to the power of music. We
have felt its captivating effects, and have seen or been part of the way it connects people to one
another. Diplomacy in its purest form has the same purpose as music. It has the power to connect
with audiences, while communicating ideas and engaging with people on the things that matter
the most. The visit of The Orchestra of the Americas to Mexico paves the way for more talent to be
presented on a global platform. I congratulate the Orchestra for strengthening the bonds among the
countries of the Americas and for bringing world-class music for all of us to enjoy. ¡Bienvenidos!

ORCHESTRA LEADERSHIP

We are honored to make this spectacular tour of Mexico, with a coast-to-coast tour of 12 cities
across the country. It is also a special year as we return to the native land of our inspiring Music
Director, Carlos Miguel Prieto, who leads the Orchestra on its transformational journey. The
Orchestra begins with a two-week Residence in Puebla, hosted by Fundación Azteca, who has
led the movement of music for social change across Mexico. After the Residence, during a three-
week concert tour, the Orchestra performs on some of the most iconic stages in Mexico, including
Palacio de Bellas Artes, Sala Nezahualcóyotl, and Sala Plácido Domingo, to name just a few. This
year alone, over 5,000 musicians from 30 countries across the Western Hemisphere entered the
audition process for the 2019 Mexico Tour; only the top 90 musicians were invited to participate,
representing 25 countries in North, South, and Central America, and the Caribbean Islands. The
depth of talent shown by all applicants demonstrates how much the Americas has to offer to the
orchestral world. The extraordinary ensemble performs side-by-side with some of the world’s top
artists, including Gil Shaham, Ingrid Fliter, Paolo Bortolameolli, and Gabriela Ortiz, in addition
to many exciting international talents including Aubree Oliverson, Carter Johnson, Fredrika
Brillembourg, Elisa Vegas, Cristóbal MarYán, Alejandra Gómez Ordaz, Julio Saldaña, Alejandra
Urrutia, and Juan Ignacio Beracochea. These highlights of the Tour are but a glimpse of the awe-
inspiring performances to come and a taste of the heart and soul each musician puts into every
single rehearsal, performance, and community engagement project. The transformational work of
the Orchestra’s tour would not be possible without your generosity, and I hope you continue to
support the amazing work of the Orchestra.

                                                          HILDA OCHOA-BRILLEMBOURG
                                                                 FOUNDING CHAIRMAN

I am extremely proud to welcome The Orchestra of the Americas to my home country of Mexico this
year. While each season brings its own unforgettable adventure, since the birth of The Orchestra of
the Americas, the unique energy of this Orchestra has remained one of the things I look forward to
most as a professional musician. This organization has affected so many lives across the world and
finds a way to reach out to humanity in all its variety, from Carnegie Hall to the Favelas of Brazil.
I know of no example of cultures existing more beautifully than in this Orchestra and applaud the
dedication and spirit of the musicians that bring the magic of each concert to life. Our 2019 Tour to
Mexico could not be possible without the belief of great supporters and partners across the region
and beyond. Your generosity not only changes the lives and futures of talented young musicians,
but also allows audiences to be part of unforgettable experiences. I thank you for making the
miracle of The Orchestra of the Americas happen!

                                                                    CARLOS MIGUEL PRIETO
                                                                         MUSIC DIRECTOR
In 2001, the dream of The Orchestra of the Americas was to create an international orchestra of the
best and brightest young musicians from across our hemisphere. Today, the Orchestra has captured
the hearts of so many, from all walks of life, in all corners of the Americas and beyond. Thanks to
the beautiful music they are making together, musicians and audiences alike are experiencing the
transformational power of music. On this special occasion of the Orchestra’s Mexico Tour, I hope
you will support this endeavor and join me in congratulating the young musicians, from whom I
continue to learn, because of their love, dedication, and hard work.

MEXICO CRESCENDO TOUR - 28 June - 3 August 2019 - The Orchestra of the Americas
It is with great joy that I return to work with The Orchestra of the Americas. I met these fantastic
musicians two years ago as resident conductor on their South American tour. Now I return to
work with even greater pleasure being part of the tour through Mexico along with my dear friend
Maestro Carlos Miguel Prieto and renowned guest soloists. It is a privilege to participate in a
project, the spirit of which conceives a vision of arts as a manifestation of human collaboration
carrying a wider message in a universal language: Music. Working with this orchestra is to be
filled with a unique energy, where all the talent and teamwork of an inspired group can be felt and
thereby transform into a cultural ambassador of our generation. I am looking forward to having
a memorable musical and human experience and hoping to fill the halls and audiences with
enthusiasm both on and off the stage!
                                                               PAOLO BORTOLAMEOLLI
                                                               ASSISTANT CONDUCTOR

It gives me great pleasure to welcome The Orchestra of the Americas to Mexico. The Orchestra
builds a musical and multicultural universe so enriching and so fascinating that our notions of
borders are diluted. I have no doubt that this endows us with a better way of understanding the
world. I am especially moved that several of your performances feature my own Hominum, whose
composition speaks to the dualities inherent to our humanity. The music in this piece describes
the search for balance, particularly the balance between our individual needs and the needs of
our societies as a whole. Because we live in a world where borders challenge our conceptions of
others, we can only continue to seek harmony among this dissonance. I wish you all the best in
your performances across Mexico, and look forward to the lasting impression your visit will make
in society.
                                                                        GABRIELA ORTIZ
                                                           COMPOSER-IN-RESIDENCE

Mexico—a nation where many cultures blend, where music plays an important role in all aspects
of life—welcomes The Orchestra of the Americas for its Mexico Tour. Many cities and citizens will
be culturally enriched by hosting the Orchestra in their theaters and plazas, which brings together
the shared goals of artistic development at the highest level, with a grassroots focus on community
service. I extend my congratulations to all the musicians accepted to represent their countries this
year.
                                                                         CECILIA SCHULTZ

TOUR PRESENTERS
In Nahuatl, one of our native languages, Mexico means the navel of the moon. We are very
pleased to welcome you to Puebla, which will become the navel of your musical journey across
our land. Ten years ago, Esperanza Azteca Choirs and Orchestras emerged here and have fostered
not only promising talent, but happy and committed people. While celebrating music during the
Puebla Ciudad Musical Festival, we are proud to receive The Orchestra of the Americas for this
exceptional project. The Orchestra helps us recognize the unparalleled capacities developed
through the practice and performance of music, which allows us to communicate beyond any
feeling; music connects us and pushes us to look past differing perspectives. We look forward to
welcoming you and hope your visit instills seeds of hope and peace.

continent. This experience reminds us of our shared human heritage, and that the transformation
of society relies on coexistence, participation, and a culture of peace.
