CONSERVATION FOR TOMORROW THE OVER-CONFIDENT WHITE-TAILED DEER Impressed by their beauty, thousands of visitors look to approach the white-tailed deers with gestures or food, actions that significantly modifiy their animal behaviour. Once a shy creature, this animal has lost its fear of humans. May a deer that has become so familiar with humans learn to fear them once again? We attempt to answer this question to establish a plan of action. Learn more on this topic at our Sans merci pour le cerf de Virginie talk. RACCOONS Did you know that raccoons are thieves? To avoid unpleasant surprises: • Maintain a clean campsite; • Don’t leave any odorant items (food, toothpaste, medications, etc.) on your campsite or in your tent, even during the day. Store them in your car trunk; • Regularly deposit all waste and rubbish in our containers; • Don’t throw cooking grease or food in the fire; • Wash your dishes after each meal; • Avoid emptying your dishwater on the ground; • Don’t cook in your tent. If they’re attracted to your campsite, they will come back! THE SQUIRREL WITH SHARP TEETH A hike... What a perfect moment to have a picnic! Many rodents have noticed. Avoid leaving uneaten snacks behind as food decomposes and undeniably attracts animals. For squirrels to invite themselves to your picnics, how many uneaten snacks have been left behind in the forest? Careful, their teeth are sharp like knives! They may also spread parasites, diseases or inflict injuries. 12
LET’S PROTECT KING OF THE OUR FOREST The wolf is at the top of the food chain. As a large carnivore, it plays a key role in maintaining a balance within the ecosystems. Since wolf pack territories cross the park’s limits, we want to clarify how the wolves interact with humans. We are also documenting possible cohabitation methods. Recent studies have shown that the fragmentation of the forests, trapping, hunting and road accidents are all threats to wolf packs. A protection plan for the wolf packs with territory within the park is now being developed. Our campfire talk Secrets de loups can tell you more about the situation of the Eastern Wolf. The wolf is at the top of the food chain and is thus the king of our forests. This great carnivore is essential to maintaining an equilibrium in the ecosystems. LET’S PROTECT THE QUEEN OF OUR LAKES While our lakes appear calm on the surface, they are also a battleground!
