Community Update Page 17 The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) Adrianne Bendich and Fran Strauss The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) has the responsibility to help ensure that the external features of your home and property (front, sides, and back) conform to Guidelines that have been agreed upon by our HOA. When you submit your application, the ARC determines if your changes conform with those Guidelines. It is therefore in YOUR BEST INTEREST to read the Guidelines so you will know even before you apply if your application will meet the Guidelines. Our small Committee (of four homeowners) has been reviewing about 15-25 applications/month, and inspecting the work after it is completed, Your application is not the only one we must review and inspect. Please help us do our work efficiently – we are your neighbors and want to assist you, but we need your help. When submitting an ARC APPLICATION FORM: •Consult the ARC Guidelines that are found on the Buena Vida HOA website. Follow all of the application sections and ALWAYS attach a copy of your plot plan (survey) and mark where your changes will go. This is your responsibility, not your contractor’s. •When applicable, include color photos and names of the plants to be placed in your landscape. Diagrams should be clear and concise. Any application without a required lot survey will be rejected. •All attachments MUST come from the Homeowner. Contractors should direct their information/drawings, etc. to the Homeowner and not bring or mail these to the office. •It is the Homeowner's responsibility to ensure the application is complete. Several applications have been rejected because of an incomplete submission. It is not management's responsibility to call Homeowners or track their paperwork when it is not handed in properly. •If the Homeowner is unsure of what's necessary to have a complete application, call the office at 561-422-9191 x260) for help. Don't wait until there's an application denial. •Note: applications are due to be submitted at the office by noon on the Friday before the ARC meeting. See the meeting scheduling information below. When to attend an ARC MEETING: •ARC meetings are held twice per month. Generally, with exceptions, the meetings are on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month, starting at 9:30 am. In October, the meetings will be held on October 7th and 21st . •Please attend the ARC meeting when your application is discussed (email Mariah Castro: mariah.castro@castlegroup.com - or call her: 561-422-9191 x260 and let her know you plan to attend). It's not unusual for there to be questions on applications that can be resolved at the ARC meeting. The ARC members are looking to help applicants get through the ARC process. It's certainly easier to do so if the application is submitted correctly.
Community Update Page 18 Architectural Review Committee Learnings Brad Evans At recent ARC meetings, certain things have become noticeably clear: • Construction material costs have risen significantly • Labor costs have also gone up significantly • There is a major backlog in getting the services of contractors • Included among the common projects that residents have wanted to have addressed are screened-in areas, patios, and landscaping. If these items and any others are in your plans, it is best to try to schedule them ASAP. Note that many of the larger projects will also require Village of Wellington permits ****Please remember that these projects and any others that change the look of the outside of your home, will require ARC approval. One other piece of guidance for our residents is that all construction materials must remain on the resident’s property during construction. The swale in front of your home is HOA property (common area) and cannot be utilized for storage during construction, or a violation will be issued. * Brad Evans is a member of the BV HOA and is also an ARC liaison

Community News Page 25 The Buena Vida Book Club, the oldest organization in the community, will be inaugurating its 18th season on Tuesday, Oct. 5, with a discussion, via Zoom, of "The Plot" by Jean Hanff Korelitz. "The plot of 'The Plot' -- the best thriller of the year so far-- is too good to give away," said The Washington Post. For those unfamiliar with this Book Club, it should come as no surprise to expect the unexpected. As usual, the author of the book under discussion will be joining us to explain some of her decisions about writing the book and will respond to questions from the audience and the moderator, Stewart Kampel. There is no charge to join the club and there is no requirement to read the book, but it helps. Those interested in getting information about the meetings should send an email to Stewartkampel@yahoo.com. An article in The New York Times called "The Plot" an addictive "Russian nesting doll of a novel where every character's hand fits neatly into someone else's pocket." The protagonist of the novel is Jacob Finch Bonner, a once-celebrated young author of a literary novel called "The Invention of Wonder." By his own admission, Jacob "fumbled his early shot, failed to produce a good enough second novel or any trace of a third novel, and had been sent to the special purgatory for formerly promising writers, from which so few of them ever emerged." That "special purgatory" is the low-residency MFA program at Ripley College in Vermont, where Jacob has taught a "prose fiction" workshop. One student, an arrogant jerk named Evan Parker, refuses to share his work with the class. A few years later, Jacob decides to use the plot of Parker's story for his own, and thereby hangs the beginnings of the twists and turns of the story. Jean Hanff Korelitz is the author of seven novels for adults, including "The Devil and Webster," "Admission" and "You Should Have Known," which inspired the HBO mini-series "The Undoing." The Zoom begins on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 2 P.M. On Tuesday, Nov. 2, also via Zoom at 2 P.M., the Book Club will greet Rivka Galchen, author and essayist for The New Yorker, to discuss her latest novel, "Everyone Knows Your Mother Is a Witch." This book takes place in 1618, and Katharina, an older widow in present-day Germany, has been accused of poisoning a woman in town. It's a ludicrous claim: She can't read or write or "even win at backgammon," let alone carry out witchcraft. As her sympathetic neighbor and her children work to discredit the claims, her story becomes a broader -- and often very funny -- examination of the destructive power of rumor. The author, who was born in Canada and grew up in Oklahoma, has an unusual background. In addition to being a frequent contributor to The New Yorker on a variety of subjects, she also has an M.D. degree.
Community News Page 26 Maltzman’s Musings: The Great Hot Dog Controversy Bruce J. Maltzman Just what we need in America-another crisis! It’s bad enough dealing with COVID 19, the Afghanistan debacle, hurricanes, forest fires and droughts. Now we have to deal with the great hot dog buntroversy. It seems that for years hot dogs have come in packages of 10 while their bun brethren have been relegated to packages of 8. In some cases there is a simple solution. If you have 40 guests coming over, you buy 4 packages of dogs and 5 packs of buns. Problem solved, unless of course you only have 23 people coming over. Then you can either buy 3 packs of dogs and four packs of buns and eat hot dogs for a week or invite 17 total strangers over and go back to plan “A”. I don’t want you to think that you are alone in losing sleep over this dogged issue. The big boys have finally entered the fray. For those of you who do not know, July was officially christened as National Hot Dog Month, and to celebrate this historic time, Heinz started the “Heinz Hot Dog Pact, “to finally make big hot dog companies and big bun companies agree on a single number of products per package: 10. It is good to know that we are finally addressing the most serious problem in America. In fact, over 4,000 people signed a “Change.org petition “10 Weiners. 10 Buns. It’s time”. The best quote on this issue came from Eric Mittenthal, president of The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, who, in support of the petition, said, “We relish any partnerships to ketchup on hot dog and bun offerings so they cut the mustard for hot dog lovers everywhere.” With this kind of energy and enthusiasm, we are sure that a solution cannot be far off. Then maybe we can direct their attention to something not quite as important, say climate change! And frankly, no article on hot dogs would be complete without paying tribute to Joey Chestnut. For the uninformed, Mr. Chestnut won the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest title this past summer for the 14th time. While most people were spending their summers tanning their buns, Mr. Chestnut spent his time consuming them-76 to be exact along with the accompanying dogs. He furterd his legend by breaking the previous world record of 75, set, coincidentally enough, by Joey Chestnut. So dominant was Mr. Chestnut in his world record performance that second place finisher, Goeffrey Esper, could barely mustard enough strength to consume a mere 50 dogs. I was going to complete this month’s column by commenting on the amazing roll that Mr. Chestnut is on, but fortunately, I have too much class for that……………………………
