NEWS 2 018 is a year of many important anniversaries, none more so than the end of the First World War on 11th November. In this centenary year, our students have been busy commemorating ‘The War to End All Wars’ in a variety of memorable ways. Earlier in the year all Year 8 students took part in a History competition to design a wreath of remembrance for the Last Post Ceremony at The Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium. 57 students were lucky to visit the former battlefields of the Western Front and our school wreath was displayed in front of an international audience. Early in November all students contributed ideas to our very own Tree of Peace which was planted in our school grounds on Friday 9th November as a living reminder of the sacrifices made by the First World War generation for us all today. Members of our school community were invited to write their thoughts commemorating peace on a label to be placed on the tree. They used special pens made from wood taken from oak trees that have regrown from the few trees that remained standing at the Mametz Wood battle site. Pictured at the planting of our special Tree of Peace are Year 11 students Grace Thomas, Ian Broome, Danniella Briggs Thomas and Nathan Wilson with Mrs Godden Mr Grainger, Head of Humanities and Mr Grainger. Oldbury Wells Awarded Safer Schools Accreditation O ldbury Wells is the latest school in Shropshire to receive an accreditation as a ‘Safer School’. In recognition of our accreditation, Shropshire Council Chairman, Ann Hartley, received this award as recognition of the continuous work we do in reviewing systems in school and our school site in order to ensure Oldbury Wells provides school security and personal safety for all.” presented a certificate and a plaque to students and staff during a special assembly held earlier this term. Councillor Ann Hartley congratulated us on our achievement and emphasised the importance of the scheme. The Safer Schools scheme is an active policy and illustrates a school’s responsible approach towards ensuring a safer and more secure environment for its pupils, staff and visitors. Part of our involvement in the scheme includes establishing a ‘Safer School Group’ with representatives from Oldbury Wells. This Group reviews security and safety and is supported by Shropshire Council and West Mercia Police. Mr Bartlett said, “Oldbury Wells School has been thorough with its Safer School Group and the school continues to monitor and review safety and security. To continue the Safer Schools process, the school will be holding an annual Safer School Group meeting and Pictured from left: PCSO Emma Smelius, Year 11 student Oliver Andreae, Ian Bartlett, the certificate is updated every two years.” Crime Prevention Officer, Miss Thomas, Principal Deputy and Ann Hartley, Shropshire Miss Thomas, Principal Deputy, said, “We are thrilled to have County Chairman. 22
Welcome to Our Year 7 Students Y ear 7 students have settled in well this term at Oldbury Wells, taking part in a variety of clubs and activities available for them to join in school. They have joined after school clubs in Textiles and Design & Technology where they are working on the exciting ‘Barrel Racer’ project in Tech Club, and they have also joined a number of PE clubs. They took part in the Flying Start project which saw them looking at into how sustainable and environmentally friendly Oldbury Wells is. They conducted surveys and questionnaires in school, met with the School Council and held a special assembly where each form presented their findings and ideas to school Governors. A very successful first term! Mrs Holford, Transition Leader Year 7 Year 6 Pupils Visit For a Festive Maths Workshop H ave you ever thought just how busy poor Santa is on Christmas Eve? He delivers presents to children around the world, but he can only start after children are asleep and must be finished by daybreak. He needs organising! We decided our primary Maths team should explore how Santa could visit all the children in the world in one day. To make it a managing problem (we don’t have fairy dust), we assume that Santa’s reindeer cannot carry too heavy a load and so can only visit five cities per trip. This will force Santa to come back to his toy factory several times to reload his sleigh. To make it on time it is crucial for Santa to minimise the total distance travelled and so our teams set to searching for a shortest overall journey. Each team came up with an answer between 127,500km to 152,000km. What was really impressive was no one used a calculator. So what does maths have to do with Santa? We used a direct link to mathematical requirements of primary school children to be able to accurately measure distances and draw angles. To help with this, we recruited the assistance of four Oldbury Wells Maths ambassadors who tirelessly circulated around the room checking all the angles were measured, guiding the children and setting them extra challenges. Our teams set to looking at Santa’s sleigh and planned his route around the world from a mathematical perspective. The focus was geometry and number skills – angles, distance travelled – adding up the distance of each route. We also introduced some geography as we tasked the teams with naming cities. By the end of the session each team produced accurately measured and creatively decorated sleighs and a map for Santa’s travels. The route planning was amazing. As a child I always wondered how Santa travelled the world and now we know that he and his elves are extremely organised and Santa is a maths genius! Pupils using maths skills to plan Santa’s trip around the world. Mrs Duodu, Maths Teacher 3

Miss Morgan, Drama Teacher Music News T he Oldbury Wells mixed voice vocal group Encore have had a busy year performing in and outside of the school community and they performed again at the Oldbury Wells Awards Evening on Tuesday 18th December. Many of our Bridgnorth Primary Schools Choir members have gone on to join Encore over the years and it has been such a pleasure to see our singers grow in confidence and skill as they progress through school. We look forward to performing again at the Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury in July 2019 as part of the Shropshire Schools Performance Platform. Student Bands We are proud to have a number of student led bands who meet each week in our practice rooms to work on their material in preparation for prospective performances. There is a real buzz of energy and excitement throughout the week in the Music department. Long may it continue! Orchestra We are very proud of our orchestra which currently has a fantastic 25 members who meet every Friday lunchtime to rehearse. There is a real camaraderie between the musicians and their love of music is so evident, playing a range of genres from film music to swing! Working With Local Primary Schools Pupils P rimary school instrumentalists worked with musicians from Oldbury Wells and staff from Shropshire Music Service on a Christmas themed orchestral collaboration on Friday 7th December. All KS2 orchestral musicians, keyboard players and guitarists were invited to participate. These biannual workshops are a great way for young musicians to meet and experience the magic of performing as an ensemble. Sight reading skills are honed and a lovely performance of the afternoon’s work is put on for parents and families. The Bridgnorth Primary Schools Choir launched the town’s Christmas Lights Switch On event on Friday 23rd November. Their cheeky performances of Naughty from Matilda and Little Saint Nick were met with rapturous applause, followed by Silent Night to get everyone in the mood for Christmas. Showstopper Castle Y ear 7 pupils have been learning about castles and defences in our area in their History classes. This has, of course, centred on a study of our very own historic Bridgnorth Castle. The pupils were set a homework challenge to make a scaled model of a castle using any material they could find. The students worked very hard on this project and took care to be historically accurate. There were many wonderful models made this year but there was one gingerbread model built by Thomas Wenham that was a real showstopper! So much so it received a Mr Grainger handshake! Well done all. Proudly showcasing his gingerbread castle is Year 7 pupil Thomas Wenham with Mr Grainger. Mr Grainger, Head of Humanities Year 7s Take Part in the Flying Start Project O ur Year 7 pupils have made an exceptional start to their time at Oldbury Wells. The Flying Start Project saw them investigate how sustainable and environmentally friendly Oldbury Wells School is. They conducted surveys in school, inviting members of staff to fill in questionnaires. Year 7 representatives then met with the School Council to discuss their findings. The project culminated in a special assembly where each Year 7 form presented their research work to our school Governors, explaining ways in which Oldbury Wells could work towards becoming more eco-friendly. Year 11s Journey to the National Space Centre I n preparation for the last Physics topic of their GCSES, the Year 11 Triple Science group took a trip to the award winning National Space Centre in Leicester this term. The centre is a museum and educational resource focusing on the fields of space science and astronomy. The students explored the six interactive galleries, including the iconic Rocket Tower, and visited the domed planetarium – the UK’s largest planetarium – to find out more about space suits, rockets, satellites and meteorites. Mr Johnson, Physics Teacher Year 11 students during their recent visit to the National Space Centre. Year 9s Spend a Day at Aston University D uring our trip to Aston University this term, we were given the chance to see and experience how different university life is from school and how it could benefit us should we choose to go to university. We enjoyed our trip and it was interesting to find out all the different subjects on offer at the university. The trip certainly helped give us an idea of what university life would be like, giving us the chance to tour the different areas. Visiting Aston has definitely helped me consider going to university in the future, so not only was this trip fun, it was also very useful. It helped me understand what studying at university is like and how it could benefit my future. Ellie James, Year 9 Student Culinary Inspiration at the Good Food Show Y ear 9 and Year 10 Food Technology students went to the BBC Good Food Show at the Birmingham NEC in December to see the UK’s best chefs and cooking experts, discover up and coming food trends, possible careers in the food industry and receive plenty of cooking inspiration. The students got to see TV chef and Great British Bake Off winner, Nadiya Hussain, cook up some culinary treats. One student was thrilled to win a signed apron from Nadiya – it made her day!
