I’m not a complex guy, and I don’t think I’m difficult to shop for, but the question always leads to a heated discussion and an argument. “How about something for your car?” Now we’re getting somewhere. But what? If there’s something I want for the Corvette, either I already bought it myself or it cost more than I wanted to spend. This year, when the questions about what I wanted for my birthday began, something new presented itself (no pun intended). Enter “The Cartist”, a professional automotive artist, and our newest Corvette Courier advertiser. The samples of his artwork seemed really good on his website. So I figured since I was the one who found him, convinced him to advertise in our newsletter, and encouraged LICOA members to hire him to do a commissioned work, I should be prepared to put my own money on the line. So I reached out to The Cartist (real name Clive Botha) by email and started the wheels turning on a commissioned artwork of my own Grand Sport. The first step was to give the car a quick wash, as it was dusty and One of the suggested mock-ups created needed a good cleaning after a long cold winter. Then I took from a photo a whole bunch of photos of the car from various angles, including some closeups to highlight some of the details, such as the wheels and side skirts. I emailed the photos to Clive. The next day, I received an email with a couple of mock-ups of suggested layouts for the final artwork utilizing the photos I sent. After picking the layout I liked and choosing the “Premium” package, Clive emailed me a request for payment through PayPal. I made the payment (LICOA members get a 15% discount for a limited time), and Clive immediately thanked me for the payment and told me he would send me a rough sketch in a few days (fitting my commissioned work into his schedule among his others projects). About one week later, Clive sent me a photo of the preliminary pencil sketch he prepared following the layout in the chosen mock-up, and asked if I was happy with it or if there was anything I wanted changed. I sent him my comments, pointed out some additional details I wanted to make sure appeared in the final piece, sent him a couple more close up photos of my car, and told him to go ahead with the layout. A few days later Clive sent me an email telling me he completed the artwork, and sent me another photo, this time of a full color rendering. It was really impressive! He asked if there were any adjustments I wanted before he Long Island Corvette Owners Association, Inc. Page 3
The Corvette Courier April 2021 scanned the artwork. I was amazed at the detail and how realistic it looked, even though it was done with pens and markers. However, I noted a couple of details I wanted him to refine, such as the crossed flag logo on the wheel hub, and the look of the brake rotor. I was concerned that it may be too late to make any changes since he said it was “done”. But when I asked if he could make the changes, he said “no problem”, and the next day he sent me another photo with the exact changes I requested. Now it’s done, I thought. I let Clive know I was very happy Pencil sketch of the chosen layout with it, and he told me he would ship the final piece to me the next business day (a Monday). He asked me to confirm my shipping address, my contact information, and asked me how I wanted the car described for the certificate of authenticity. “2011 Grand Sport Convertible”, was my response, along with all the other information he requested. That Monday, Clive sent me an email confirming he had shipped out the artwork, gave me the tracking number and also a link for me to download the scanned images, a high-res version and a low-res version. I clicked on the links and couldn’t believe how great they looked. Unless you looked really close, you would think it was a photograph, but zooming in, you can see the hand drawn artwork. The detail was amazing, right down to the chrome details, the shadows and the reflections in the paintwork on the nose and tail of the car. Wow! Not only did I get the scanned images, but with the Premium package I selected, Clive also was shipping me the actual artwork on 13”x20” quality art paper. I figured since he was shipping it to me from his studio in South Africa, it would be at least a couple more weeks before it arrived. I was wrong. Four days later, on Friday, I found a shipping tube left by my front door by UPS. It was a very sturdy tube with plastic caps on each end. It would take a lot of force to bend or crush this tube, I thought. I cut the tape off one end of the tube, pulled off the plastic cap, and found some bubble wrap inside, wrapped around the rolled up artwork. In addition to the actual art, Clive also sent me his preliminary pencil sketch and a signed certificate of authenticity. I was very pleased and impressed with the way the artwork was packaged, certain to arrive in perfect condition. Time for the entire process, beginning to end - about three weeks. Clive was apparently so pleased with his own work, he added the picture of my car to the portfolio on his website and Instagram page for the whole world to see. My car has 120 likes, so far! Clive followed up with an email, confirming that I received the package in good condition, and that I was pleased The final commissioned artwork with everything. Couldn’t be happier and worth every penny. I’m looking forward to getting the artwork framed so I can hang it up with my other Corvette memorabilia. I now have an original artwork and a keepsake of my own Corvette, unlike anyone else’s. Best of all, the question about what I wanted for my birthday this year was answered without heated discussion or argument. Long Island Corvette Owners Association, Inc. Page 4
The Corvette Courier April 2021 President’s Message By Ed Stichweh So you say you want some events? As the New York restrictions loosen up, LICOA has its first six events posted. Please take the time to go through the Courier to find the flyers. I have inquired with the North Bellmore Library to try to start up the general meetings again. It will not happen any time soon, so we will continue the Zoom meetings for now. If you would like to help out with any of the upcoming events, please reach out to the Chair of that event. Our first official Corvette show in over a year will be at Atlantic Chevrolet in Bay Shore, on Sunday, May 16th. It will be a breath of fresh air to get back to a semi-normal regiment. Please note, on the registration form you must go through the COVID checklist in addition to filling out the form. We will not take temperatures, hoping people are honest with their answers. Masks are required. On that note, it will be mandatory to wear a mask to all LICOA events until we are certain the virus has been eradicated and an all-clear sign is given from the CDC. The Osprey’s Dominion event on June 13th will be a nice outdoor event with a barbecue (bring your own food) and a beautiful view of the vineyards. Please see the flyer for details. We will have a joint club event with the Richmond County Corvette Club from Staten Island. LICOA and RCCC will rally to the Hampton Bays for lunch Saturday, June 19th. A new flyer with payment and contact information has been produced – caravan details to come. We will end the month of June with the Vanderbilt All-Car Show on Sunday, June 27 on the grounds of the Vanderbilt Museum overlooking Cold Spring Harbor. Registration is on the day of the event. Vettes & Jets will be held at the Cradle of Aviation Museum on Saturday, July 10th – please see the flyer for details. As you can see we have a nice selection of events so far with more to be added as gathering and socializing regulations ease up. Be safe and we will see you soon. The Corvette Courier April 2021 Clif Notes By Clif Nagel, Contributing Editor As a past LICOA Show Winner, Division winner, and Co-Champion, I feel it’s time to discuss in length the mortal enemies of every Corvette owner – SCUFFS and SCRATCHES. The finish on your car can get messed up in many ways, including the following; rock chips and flying debris parking incidents collisions dragging objects across the paint vandalism bad cleaning techniques Try as hard as you may, you will eventually be challenged by one or more of these nemeses. But that doesn’t mean you can’t try to avoid the battle. For this article, I’m going to basically refer to everything related to our plastic-bodied Corvettes. There are many more things to consider and cover when it comes to paint care and treatment, but I’m going to omit those that relate specifically to metal bodied cars. The surface of our Corvettes typically consist of four layers: the body panels (either fiberglass, sheet molded compound or carbon fiber), primer, color base coat and the clear coat. These layers are equally important, but the most important to the depth and sheen of the surface is the clear coat. The body panels create the shape of the car (DUH), the primer holds the paint, the base coat sets the color of the car, and the clear coat, which is the first layer of protection from the daily bombardment of rain, dust, pollen, dirt, rocks, sand, tree sap, acid rain, bug guts and greetings from flying animals. If the clear coat fails, you’re going to have a bad (i.e. costly) day. So let’s discuss how to treat and/or repair some of the damage the clear coat must sustain. Light Scratches No matter how bad they look, light scratches are confined to the clear coat and don’t quite reach to the color base coat or primer. Light scratches can be removed with proper polishing techniques. As a general rule, if you can’t feel the scratch with your fingernail, you can get rid of it. Buffing out these scratches by hand is harder than Chinese arithmetic, so you should pick up a random orbital buffer on the internet. If you prefer to pick one up in person, Harbor Freight sells a nice inexpensive one. The random buffer is great for beginners and eliminates the worry you might have. The reason for this is that the buffing pad moves around without guidance from the operator. I use a PorterCable 7424 with 6 speeds. Buffing pads are also a must. The types of pads available are divided into separate categories, depending on the job, and are rated at different levels of coarseness. As for product, you should get some scratch and swirl remover. I can’t recommend any particular brand, as this is a matter of personal choice, and they all pretty much do the same thing. Some are easier to work with than others, but this is something you will learn yourself with experience. Start with a polish made by your favorite brand, and be sure to follow the instructions. Don’t skip steps or make some up. And start at the lowest speed setting and work your way up until the defect is removed. Paint transfer scratches These are caused when your car comes into contact, ever so lightly, with another car or stationary object, or perhaps the dreaded runaway shopping cart, a natural predator of cars, Long Island Corvette Owners Association, Inc. Page 9
The Corvette Courier April 2021 lurking around shopping centers waiting to pounce. They are fast but usually betrayed by the sound of a wobbly wheel. While these scratches are scary looking, they can be quite easy and quick to remove with a little light buffing. Swirl Marks These are guaranteed to drive you totally bonkers, particularly on your darker shades of paint or under direct sunlight. The paint generally looks great, but under the right light or from the right angle, the web of swirls are visible. You can’t feel them but they are there. What’s more heartbreaking is the fact that "you Sir, or Madam, are the one who done it”. Swirl marks in the clear coat are caused by bad cleaning, washing and drying techniques. Example: if you wash your car with one mitt or sponge and don’t frequently rinse in a second bucket of clean water, all the stuff you just took off your surface with the sponge or mitt goes right back onto the car with each swipe. And particles that don’t dissolve get stuck in the sponge or mitt and act like sandpaper scratching the clear coat. By the same token, if you dry your car with a towel, it can also scratch the surface. You should be in the habit of using two buckets – one for soap and the other to rinse. This method will eliminate the major cause of these swirl marks. The other is to use a leaf blower or other such device to dry the car without touching the surface. I use a Master Blaster when I wash and dry my car, but there are many other alternatives available. I also have a Vac N Blo, but that’s much slower. That being said, I haven’t actually washed my car in years. What I’m into now is a waterless wash and wax. This product has the ability to suspend the abrasive particles and prevent them from scratching. It also has a wax included so it’s a 2 in 1 treatment. Again, there are countless such products available. Plastic scratches The many plastic trim parts can be sanded down or shaved level with an industrial razor blade and refinished with a back to black treatment. Again, the product you use is a matter of taste. By this time you may already have a favorite brand of product. Sanding leaves scratches so a progressive grit method is best. Deep Scratches Sorry, but at this point, if you have scratches that go through the clear coat and into the paint, or through the paint and primer to the body panel, for most of us it’s time to reach for the wallet and pay for professional help. Deep scratches will likely require the removal of the clear coat from the entire body panel, a sanding and repaint. You could try one of the various touch- up paint products on the market, but this will merely cover the scratch and make it less noticeable, but it will still be there and clearly visible. If you’re a perfectionist, this will not make you happy. If the damage extends to multiple body panels, you may want to put in a claim with your insurance company. So in summary, to help prevent the paint issues, apply better cleaning techniques, avoid parking lots where shopping carts roam unattended, avoid touching the surface of the car when possible, and don’t park where seagulls fly overhead (this is a whole new ballgame). If your pockets are deep enough, there are protective vinyl wraps, and ceramic coatings, which are gaining in popularity, but that’s a discussion for another time Keep the rubber down and outta da weeds and and don’t look up where seagulls fly. The Corvette Courier April 2021 Governor’s Report by George Reich Spring is in the air, as the temperature is rising, the COVID numbers are declining and our corvettes are beginning to reappear. The guiding light to some form of normalcy has arrived for many of our members already. On Feb 3 and on March 3, Mariana and I received the Moderna vaccinations with minimal side effects. Hopefully by the time you read this, a majority of our members either have been or are on the list to receive their inoculations. Over the next two months, there will be events by LICOA and other clubs or organizations. On April 18, the first event will be Cars and Guitars classic all car fund raiser for 911 and wounded warriors. It’s at Miller’s Ale house from 11 AM - 4 PM located at 88 Veterans Memorial Highway, Commack NY. There will be a $15 car registration. On May 16th we will be having our first car show at Atlantic George with his 2019 Z06 Chevrolet and I hope all LICOA Members can attend. If any LICOA member has any new car shows, events or suggestions that I should be aware of, please call, text or e-mail me the information so that I can pass it on to the membership. As a result we were able to purchase, as requested by the Northport recreations and therapy unit, ten nine inch portable DVD players for our brave veterans to enjoy watching movies, and fifty assorted Passover and Easter decorations to brighten up their rooms. We also donated a check of $746.60 from the remaining balance we collected. On April 1st 2021, Vinny Capasso, Gino Albanese and I presented the aforementioned gifts to Laura Merring from the VA recreation unit. We would like to personally thank all LICOA members who contributed to our veterans fund. Short answer: If you are age 60, your max level should be 4.0. The Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test measures the level of PSA present in male's blood. For this test, a blood sample is sent to a lab for analysis. Most insurance companies and medicare do this for free. I have always gotten an annual exam and my number was always 2.7-2.9. When I attended a Long Island Cruizin’ For A Cure event last year, my free PSA test by Winthrop was just over 4.0. As I got 3 more PSA tests, it went up to 7.9. I researched my options and decided on cyberknife surgery, which is actually targeted radiation. I went to work the whole week and did my procedure in five days during my lunch time. Fast forward, I feel great and fortunate. My new PSA number is less than 1.0. If anyone has any questions, feel free to contact me, or see me at the car shows. Let’s all stay healthy.
