Welcome to Mother Teresa Catholic Primary School This reference booklet provides some essential information about our community, our vision and mission, as well as organisational arrangements. We are pleased that you and your family are members of our community. May God bless our endeavours together! Kind Regards, Mr Denis Graham School Principal 4
Our Purpose As a Catholic School, our PURPOSE is inspired by the Gospel of Life. Our VISION: Mother Teresa Catholic Primary School is a Christ-centred, inclusive learning community that embraces the gospel values of Faith, Love, Community, Compassion, Hope and Joy. Exemplified through the life and work of Mother Teresa, we strive to make a difference in our world and to all humanity. Our MISSION as a Catholic school is to: Foster a safe and friendly environment where everyone is valued and accepted; Nurture the whole person, emphasizing faith, love, community, compassion, hope and joy; Promote excellence in all areas of education and a life-long love of learning Through our rich learning experiences to make a difference in our world and to all humanity As a community of hope investing in the future, we embrace Christianity as the way of humanity. We VALUE: Catholic culture as foundational and formative Community which is family-like and inclusive Curriculum that innovates and energises Pedagogy which individuates and engages Staff who love their students and who love their own learning Leadership that is visionary and at the service of the community Facilities that are contemporary and agile 5
Our Mother Teresa Way A School wide positive relationship framework The Mother Teresa Way is based on the core Christian values of: LOVE HOPE COMMUNITY COMPASSION FAITH JOY These values are witnessed in the life and teaching of Jesus Christ. Our Mother Teresa Way describes how we live and learn together in a Catholic Community and is explicitly taught and reinforced in all aspects and contexts of school life. Relationships Relationships and Community are at the very core of Christian living. The vitality of relationships is expressed in God’s ‘Trinitarian nature’: Father, Son, and Spirit. This understanding inspires those in Catholic Education to strive to be a living Christian community in relationship with God, others and the world. When we exclude God from our relationships, we diminish purposeful meaning and direction. When God is central to faith and life, we have hope and joy. Wherever we experience love we experience God; for God is love (1 John 4:8). There is nothing more important than healthy, positive relationships and well-being within a community. Positive relationships allow everyone to achieve maximum potential and growth. A school which lives out its values is a happy, welcoming, caring and safe place where there is great potential for everybody’s needs to be met, and where all have the opportunity to succeed and develop to their full potential. As stated in the Melbourne Declaration on Education Goals for Young Australians (MCEETYA 2008): ‘students need to have a sense of self-worth, self-awareness and personal identity that enables them to manage their emotional, mental, spiritual and physical well-being’, with a sense of hope and ‘optimism about their future’. On a social level, it helps students to ‘form and maintain healthy relationships’ and prepares them ‘for their potential life roles as family, community and workforce members’ At Mother Teresa, a range of beliefs, practices, programs and strategies are in place across the school which aim to develop healthy, positive school culture. These include: Student engagement in deep learning experiences The Religious Education Curriculum School Wide Positive Relationship Framework 6

If after discussions you are not happy with the outcome you may wish to talk further with a member of the Leadership Team, particular if it is related to their area of responsibility. Matters of serious concern should of course be discussed with the Principal or a member of the Leadership Team. It can be disconcerting for a teacher if the Principal alerts them to an issue in their class on which they have no knowledge nor have been given the opportunity to resolve in the first instance. Methods of Communication SkoolBag- SkoolBag is our main source of communication. This is where our fortnightly newsletter is published along with upcoming events and notices. Make Every Minute Count! The morning transition from home to school is the most important transition of any school day. The best learning time for students is the start of the school day. That is when every minute counts the most!! Getting to school on time ensures everyone has a calm and orderly start to their day. Bags, lunch orders and notices dealt with at the right time. Learning is easier because no-one has missed the start of the lesson. Children are happy and secure because there is a known routine which offers them structure. Teachers are pleased that learning experiences will be offered to all students in their class at the same time. When your child misses That equals… Which is… And therefore, from on average just… Transition to Year 12, that is… 10 minutes a day 50 minutes of learning Nearly 1½ weeks per Nearly ½ a year of each week year school 20 minutes a day 1 hour and 40 minutes Nearly 2½ weeks per Nearly a year of school of learning each week year ½ hour a day ½ a day of learning a 4 weeks per year Nearly 1½ years of week learning 1 hour each day 1 whole day of learning 8 weeks per year or Over 2½ years of each week nearly a term a year learning Classrooms open at Don’t be late. 8:10am Learning starts at 8:15am 13
Transport Information Road Safety Whilst road safety will be a topic discussed in all year levels, we will rely upon parents to help us keep children safe on the roads. This will include parents acting responsibly when dropping off or collecting their child/children. Parent Parks Please read sign posts carefully. Parents are urged to comply with directions given by school staff at all times. The Kiss and Go area operates similar to other schools and will be patrolled by school staff to ensure the smooth and safe operation for both students and parents. Please exercise extreme caution when dropping off and collecting your children. Double parking is illegal and very dangerous, please do not double park. Parents must come in to the school grounds to collect children. Please DO NOT TELL CHILDREN TO MEET YOU OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL GROUNDS Healthy Eating – School Lunches School is a time when children start to make independent choices about their lifestyles. School aged children learn quickly and are influenced by friends and popular trends. This is an important time to talk about and encourage healthy food habits. Involving children in planning and preparing their own lunchboxes gives them the opportunity to learn about healthy eating and gives them a chance to make autonomous decisions about what they will be eating during the day. Mother Teresa Catholic Primary School is a nut aware school, please consider this when packing your child/ren’s lunchbox. Tips for healthy lunchboxes include: Cut up large pieces of fruit and put them in a container – this makes it easier to eat, especially if your child has wobbly teeth or if they have less time to eat then they are used to. Send a damp face washer to help with extra juicy fruit. Consider giving half a sandwich or roll for morning recess, as this is an easy way to get a healthy fill. In the hot weather, send frozen milk, yoghurt or water, or even frozen orange segments. This makes a great refreshing snack and helps to keep the lunch box cool. Go for colour and crunch in the lunch lox by offering a variety of colourful vegetables and fruit. There are many websites where you can find ideas for healthy and interesting school lunches. 14
Parents as Partners Parents and Friends Association The role of the Mother Teresa Catholic Primary School Parents & Friends Association is to participate in the optimum spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional and physical development of students in the school. All parents and/or guardians of children attending the school, and the staff of the school are members of the association. The P&F Committee meets each term, the date and time is published in the school newsletter. All parents and friends are encouraged to attend meetings. Volunteering at Mother Teresa Catholic Primary School Your valuable assistance can be provided in many ways at our school, sharing your time in the classroom, helping at special events such as sporting carnivals and excursions. These can be applied for through www.forms.pfes.nt.gov.au Volunteer Application Forms can be collected from the front office prior to handing in your application to Work Safe NT. 15
Student Uniforms In the spirit of the vision and mission of our school community, we are committed to be partners with our parents and families in pursuing the wellbeing, learning and character development of our students. School policies and procedures are directed towards the supporting of these goals. The social norms of the school are fundamental in establishing the environment in which these goals are pursued. The school uniform policy assists in creating a suitable educational environment at Mother Teresa. Uniforms also promote equity in that individuals are not distinguished in terms of their economic or social status – all are valued for who they are rather than what they have. Besides obvious safety issues in some learning activities (e.g. HPE and sports), the wearing of jewellery is discouraged for similar reasons of equity. Mother Teresa’s school uniform will provide the students with a sense of unity and pride and will be an integral part of participating in the life of the school. It will also enable parents to avoid discussions about clothing suitability. Uniforms will be able to be purchased from the school. The school has a policy that school hats are worn by children whenever they are outdoors. School Hat All students are required to wear their school hat throughout the year at break times and when participating in outdoor activities. The school hat should be worn to and from school. The school has a “No Hat – No Play ” Policy during recess and lunch breaks meaning if a student does not have their hat at school, they are required to be in an allocated shaded location as directed by a staff member. Jewellery A wrist watch may be worn and a thin gold or silver chain with a cross but no other form of jewellery is acceptable. Students who have pierced ears may wear one pair of ‘sleepers’ or ‘studs’ only. Hair Hair on any student (male or female), that is longer than the bottom of the collar, is to be tied back at all times whilst at school. This is a safety issue as well as a health issue. Hairstyles should not attract undue attention or be extreme in presentation. If hair is short it should be neat, clean and off the face, particularly out of eyes. Hair longer than the bottom of the collar must be tied back and secured. No shaved heads (or parts of head) will be permitted (for example, ‘Mohawk’ style). Hair colour must be in natural tones. Brightly coloured hair or extreme highlights are not acceptable. Individual clumps or patches of colour in the hair are not acceptable. Students will be instructed to correct hair colouring that does not fall within these guidelines. Hair needs to be neat and tidy at all times. Blue and White ribbons are acceptable Nail Polish and tattoo stickers are not to be worn at school NAMES WILL BE REQUIRED ON ALL CLOTHING – Especially hats, shoes and other clothing students might remove at school. 16

School Fees School Fees School Fees and Levies are an integral part of Catholic Education Schooling. Catholic schools have fees to help meet the shortfall in Government Funding. The reasonable fee structure is essential for Catholic schools to operate and provide the high-quality education, quality leaning environments, and advanced resources that parents/carers rightly expect. All Catholic schools strive to keep fees as low as possible. The term ‘school fees’ includes tuition fees and levies. Each school assesses the school levies necessary to meet their individual school and community operation requirements. In doing this they are firstly guided by the diocesan tuition fees set by Catholic Education N.T. In keeping with the Gospel values, no child will be refused a Catholic education due to financial difficulty which has been verified by the school. There are discounts available for multi-student families and for those who have a Pensioner and Health Care Card that are means tested. All costs associated with the collection of overdue accounts but not limited to professional collection costs, legal fees and disbursements will be recoverable by the school in addition to the overdue amount and any interest charged.
