Dutch Iowan Holiday Hear from influencer and social media marketing advisor, Melissa Church, all about her time in Pella. She includes her and her husband’s favorite places to dine, drink, and learn about Pella’s rich Dutch culture. There’s a look the Midwest has here in America. Farm- land, corn, barns, and boring towns that look identical to every other stop along the highway. Although none of these stereotypes are true for Pella, Iowa. Pella, Iowa is an oasis of Dutch heritage tucked away quietly outside of Des Moines. Driving along the winding road towards Pella is exactly what you’d expect for a Midwest town. Then, after that final turn it seems you landed in The Netherlands. Every building is a picturesque caricature of life far away. My husband, Sam, and I discovered Pella together, as neither of us had visited before. We had heard stories of a magical Tulip Time where flowers take the stage and cover the entire town in tourism and culture. We decided to visit Pella in July and see a more laid-back version of town. From dawn until dusk, Sam and I explored Downtown Pella. Navigating the Pella Historical District helped shape our pending adventure by teaching us all about Pella’s earliest residents, the Dutch culture, and the history of this delightful town. Hours were spent reading and taking in all the museum had to offer. The only thing that could draw us away was the thought of lunch and the choices we had to make for where to go! There are only so many meals to eat on one trip and we had some major decisions to make. We had not planned on Pella being such a foodie destination!
The remainder of the day was spent visiting as many local shops as we could, as well as snacking our way through town, while trying to take mental pictures of the world around us. A quick turn off the main path took us to another unexpected change of scenery. The Molengracht Plaza made us unable to blink; worrying we would wake up from the dream we must’ve been in. I couldn’t accurately describe the beauty of the Molengracht Plaza, and saying a canal breaking up the walkway between shops doesn’t give full justice. As we packed up to leave Pella, Sam and I shared a look of disappointment in knowing we had to go back to The Real World. We were only in Pella for a weekend but it was one of the best trips we’ve taken in a long time. Since we left in July, every weekend outing and daytrip, Pella is thrown into the discussion. “Let’s go back!” I shared some photos and videos online of our excursion when some of my friends from The Netherlands had to double-take to ensure I wasn’t actually next door. “Melissa! Are you still in America?” I may have been physically in Amer- ica, but I was spiritually across the oceans experi- encing Iowa like it’s never been seen before. “The Molengracht Plaza made us unable to blink; worrying we would wake up from the dream we must’ve been in.” For more information about Melissa’s trip to Pella, check out her Instagram: @themelissachurch and @bad_science_jokes
