ADULT ACTIVITIES Parks & Recreation Guide • Summer 2021 • 21 DRAGON BOATS PenMet Parks has a Dragon Boat Team: Gig Harbor Dragons! A Dragon Boat is a long narrow boat that has 10 or 20 paddlers, a helms person to guide the boat and a drummer in the bow to help the paddlers keep a steady rhythm in their strokes. Dragon boats are the basis of the team paddling sport of dragon boat racing, a watersport which has its roots in an ancient folk ritual of contending villagers, which has been held for over 2000 years throughout southern China. Dragon Boat Paddling and Dragon Boat Racing has become a popular sport in most maritime communities. The Gig Harbor Dragon Boat Team is a recreational and competitive paddling team that provides members with instruction, moral support, friendship, and fun, on and off the water. Practices prepare us with technique and camaraderie to recreate and/or compete in Dragon Boat racing while maintaining our core values. PenMet Parks and Gig Harbor Dragons are offering an Interim registration for new paddlers to attend our Land Training and Dockside Training Sessions.
