PLANNING A CATHOLIC MARRIAGE July 2019 – June 2020 Congratulations! We are happy you have decided to marry in the Catholic Church and will be receiving the Sacrament of Matrimony. There is formation and preparation for all the sacraments of the faith, and this guide will help you choose the best class for you. The name “PreCana” comes from the Wedding Feast at Cana, where Jesus performed his first public miracle, changing water into wine. Pre means before, so before your personal Wedding Feast at Cana, your own wedding day, we help you prepare for the sacrament and start on your journey to a happy, healthy, and holy lifelong marriage. Getting Married in the Archdiocese of Chicago Schedule an introductory meeting with your pastor or deacon Meet with your pastor or deacon before you commit to a wedding date, and read through your parish’s marriage guidelines. You can ask about appropriate music for the ceremony, and begin to fill out some of the required paperwork. If you are getting married outside of the Archdiocese of Chicago you will have to meet with the pastor preparing you for marriage (local) and be in contact with the pastor witnessing your ceremony (remote). Take a premarital inventory The inventories recommended by the Archdiocese of Chicago are both research and scientifically based with a Catholic understanding of marriage. They are the Catholic Couple Check Up, available at pvm.archchicago.org, or FOCCUS. Both inventories can be taken online. Attend a marriage preparation class Classes are listed on the next page. Attend a natural family planning class
Learn about the only method of family planning morally acceptable to Catholic teaching.
Information about this can be found on pvm.archchicago.org.
Follow-up with your pastor or deacon
Discuss any concerns raised in your marriage preparation class, share the results of the
premarital inventory, and review the ceremony details with the pastor or deacon that will be
presiding over your ceremony. Complete the required paperwork and review the readings and
music you have chosen.
Purchase a marriage license and attend the wedding rehearsal
Be sure you buy your marriage license at least, but no more than, 60 days before your ceremony.
The wedding rehearsal takes place at your church with those involved in the ceremony as
determined by your pastor or deacon.
Enjoy your wedding day as you receive the sacrament of matrimony
Begin your lifetime commitment to one another, your own marriage in the Lord.
Precana
Engaged couples can attend a one day PreCana class held on a Saturday and led by a trained
married couple at a variety of parishes. Through short talks, sharing of the facilitators’ own
experiences, group exercises, and personal reflection, couples are guided through topics useful
for a successful future marriage. Some of the topics presented are: the sacrament of marriage,
couple prayer, family of origin, couple adjustment and growth, Catholic faith, natural family
planning, conflict management, finances, and children.
Class starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m. with a one hour lunch break. You will receive
a certificate of attendance at the end of the day which fulfills the marriage preparation
requirement in the Archdiocese of Chicago.
The fee for PreCana is $195 per couple. This covers the cost of the program, continental
breakfast, handouts, workbooks, resources, and site rental.
If you are separated by distance and unable to attend a gathered PreCana, you may get
permission from your priest or deacon to take the class online at
catholicmarriageprepclass.com.

3This seminar is about the Vocation and Sacrament of Marriage. It can help you rediscover or
discover for the first time the beauty, truth, and goodness of the Catholic faith relating to
marriage. The pedagogical approach to the seminar is threefold: presentations teach and assist
couples to see how the Catholic faith relates to marriage and family life and are then followed by
reflection, discussion, and prayer.
Presentations include the following:
• Trinitarian Theology, Creation, Sin, Suffering, Redemption, Vocation and Discipleship
• Covenantal Theology and the Properties of Marriage
• Sacraments: Matrimony, the Eucharist, and Reconciliation
• Covenantal Communication, Moral Virtues, and Money
• Covenantal Love and Life: Planning your Family God’s Way
The seminar takes place on two Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The $280 fee covers the two
days, books, resources, catered breakfasts and lunches, NFP class, and stipends.

Natural Family Planning
A Healthy Option for a Lifetime of Love
Natural Family Planning (NFP) is an umbrella term for natural, healthy, and morally acceptable
methods of fertility management that follow Catholic teaching to help couples space, achieve,
or avoid pregnancy.
These methods are scientific, completely safe, natural, have no side effects, and do not involve
the use of any medications, drugs, hormones, or devices.
The three methods taught in the Archdiocese of Chicago are: The Billings Ovulation MethodTM,
the Sympto-Thermal Method, and the Creighton Model System. Classes are offered in English,
Spanish, and Polish at a variety of locations.
You are encouraged to learn NFP four to six months before your wedding.

Estamos felices de que hayan decidido casarse en la iglesia católica y que deseen recibir el
sacramento del Matrimonio. Hay formación y preparación para todos los sacramentos de nuestra
fe, y esta guía les ayudará a escoger la mejor sesión para ustedes.
El nombre “PreCaná” viene de la fiesta de bodas en Caná, donde Jesús realizó su primer milagro
público, convirtiendo agua en vino. El prefijo “Pre” significa “antes”, de modo que antes de su
fiesta de bodas en Caná—su propio día de bodas—les ayudaremos a prepararse para recibir el
sacramento y comenzar su jornada hacia un matrimonio feliz, saludable y santo de toda la vida.

matrimonios entre o con militares, segundos matrimonios y matrimonios Afro-Americanos.

5Tomen una clase sobre planeación natural familiar
Aprenda sobre el único método de planeación familiar moralmente aceptado para la enseñanza
católica. Puede encontrar información acerca de esto en pvm.archchicago.org. Dele seguimiento
con su sacerdote o diácono. Discuta cualquier preocupación que salga de su clase de preparación
matrimonial, comparta los resultados de su inventario prematrimonial y revise los detalles de
la ceremonia con el sacerdote o diácono que estará presidiendo en su ceremonia. Complete el
papeleo requerido y revise las lecturas y la música que usted ha escogido.
Compren una licencia de matrimonio y vaya al ensayo de la boda
Asegúrese de comprar la licencia para matrimonio antes del día de la ceremonia, pero con no
más de 60 días de anterioridad. El ensayo de la boda tiene lugar en su iglesia con aquellos que
participarán en la ceremonia como ha sido determinado por su sacerdote o diácono.

Precaná
Las parejas que están comprometidas atienden una clase de un día en sábado. La clase se ofrece
en distintas parroquias y es dirigida por un matrimonio entrenado en el ministerio. A través
de presentaciones cortas, el compartir de la propia experiencia de los facilitadores, ejercicios
grupales y reflexión personal, las parejas son guiadas a través de temas útiles para el éxito
del futuro matrimonio. Algunos de los temas presentados son: el sacramento del matrimonio,
la oración en la pareja, la familia de origen, ajuste y crecimiento de la pareja, la fe católica,
planeación familiar natural, manejo de conflictos, finanzas y niños.
La clase comienza a las 8:30 a.m. y termina a las 5:30 p.m. con una hora de receso para la
comida. Ustedes recibirán un certificado de asistencia al final del día, el cual cubre el requisito de
preparación prematrimonial de la arquidiócesis de Chicago.
La cuota por el PreCaná es de $195.00 por pareja. Esto cubre los costos del programa, un
desayuno continental, copias, cuadernos de trabajo, recursos y la renta del lugar.
Si ustedes se encuentran separados por la distancia y no pueden tomar un PreCaná
juntos, deben pedir permiso a su sacerdote o diácono para tomar la clase en línea en

Planificación Familiar Natural
Una opción sana para una vida de amor
Planificación Familiar Natural (PFN) es un término general de los métodos naturales, que ayudan a las
parejas a manejar su fertilidad de una forma sana, saludable y moralmente aceptable según la enseñanza
Católica, para espaciar, lograr o evitar el embarazo.
Estos métodos son científicos, totalmente naturales, no implican el uso de medicamentos, drogas,
hormonas o dispositivos, son seguros, y no tienen efectos secundarios.
Existen tres métodos de PFN que se enseñan en la Arquidiócesis de Chicago: el Método de la Ovulación
BillingsTM, el Método Sinto-Térmico y el Modelo de Creighton. Las clases se ofrecen en inglés, español y
polaco en varias localidades.
Se recomienda aprender la PFN de cuatro a seis meses antes de su boda. Para más información llame o

Nazwa „PreCana” pochodzi od wesela w Kanie Galilejskiej - miejsca, gdzie miał miejsce pierwszy
cud uczyniony przez Pana Jezusa, który na prośbę swej matki przemienił wodę w wino. „Pre”
oznacza „przed” a więc przed Waszym własnym ślubem i weselem chcemy pomóc Wam
w przygotowaniu się do sakramentu małżeństwa i rozpoczęcia nowej drogi w związku, który
przetrwa całe życie.
Etapy poprzedzające zawarcie małżeństwa w Archidiecezji Chicago
1. Wstępne spotkanie z księdzem lub pomocnikiem duszpasterskim.
2. Ewaluacja przedmałżeńska i dyskusja.
3. Uczestnictwo w kursie przedmałżeńskim organizowanym przez parafię lub Archidiecezję.
4. Dodatkowe materiały filmowe dostosowane do różnych sytuacji życiowych.
5. Wykład na temat naturalnego planowania rodziny.
6. Konsultacja z księdzem lub pomocnikiem duszpasterskim.
7. Licencja małżeńska i próba generalna przed ceremonią zaślubin.
8. Dzień zaślubin.
9. Warsztaty dokształcające dla młodych małżeństw w okresie pierwszych lat małżeństwa.

9Naturalne planowanie rodziny
Zdrowy wybór dla miłości na całe życie
Naturalne planowanie rodziny (NPR) jest ogólnym terminem obejmującym różne naturalne
metody stosowane w celu zajścia w ciążę, odłożenia jej na później lub w celu całkowitego
zrezygnowania z posiadania potomstwa. Metody te oparte są na wynikach badań naukowych i
stałej obserwacji naturalnie powracających znaków i symptomów dni płodnych i niepłodnych w
kobiecym cyklu miesięcznym. NPR szanuje godność ludzkiej osoby w kontekście małżeństwa
i życia rodziny. Pozwala pozostać otwartym na samo życie oraz ułatwia głębsze zrozumienie
wartości, jaką jest dziecko. Dzięki wzajemnemu obdarowywaniu się miłością i dawaniu życia, NPR
pogłębia i zacieśnia także więź między mężem a żoną.
Istnieją różne metody naturalnego planowania rodziny, ale najbardziej nowoczesnymi i
najczęściej stosowanymi są Metoda Owulacji Billingsa (Billings Ovulation Method), metoda
objawowo-termiczna (Sympto-Thermal Method) oraz Model Creighton’a (Creighton Model
System). Wykłady prowadzone są w języku angielskim i hiszpańskim w różnych miejscach na
terenie naszej archidiecezji.
Zaleca się, żeby para zapoznała się z metodami naturalnego planowania rodziny na cztery do
