Glasgow Music Festival Association
Glasgow Music Festival Association is a Scottish charity that actively encourages
and develops interest and participation in amateur performing arts. It provides vital
support for the annual Festival and, from time to time, for other events and activities.

The Association was founded in 1910 and organised the first Festival, a four-day
event, part of the Scottish Exhibition of National History, Art and Industry, held in
Glasgow in 1911.

Everyone who is interested in the Festival and its objectives is encouraged to join
the Association. Members receive:
    • a membership card which entitles members to observe the work of the
       Association at selected Festival sessions;
    • an e-copy of the Festival Syllabus;
    • advance notification of Festival events; and
    • a vote at general meetings of the Association.

For further information and an application form, please contact the membership
administrator, Dorothy Gunnee, on 0141 778 4458 or visit the Festival website at
www.glasgowmusicfestival.org.

Support the Festival in 2022 - ‘Sponsor a Class’
Glasgow Music Festival Association invites support of individuals and groups to
help ensure that people of all ages may continue to benefit from the Festival's
unique performance opportunities. Funding the Festival is challenging, and those
who ‘sponsor a class’ will make a valuable and important contribution to this work.
Any class in the Festival - in music, speech & drama and dance - may be ‘sponsored’.
 • Your donation of £20 or over could sponsor a solo class;
 • Your donation of £30 or over could sponsor a class for duets or small groups.
 • Your donation of £50 or over could sponsor a class for choirs, orchestras or bands.
Class sponsors may choose to be acknowledged in the Festival Programme or to
be anonymous as they prefer. It is anticipated that named sponsors of a class will
be included in a list as part of that class’s programme description. The opportunity
to sponsor a class exclusively or to sponsor a section or range of classes may also
be available.
If you would be interested in supporting the Festival in this important way, please
contact the Treasurer, Jane McKenna (jane@glasgowmusicfestival.org), for further
information or download a brochure from the website.

The Glasgow Society of Organists was established in 1911.
Membership includes organists, church musicians and those
who simply enjoy organ and choral music. The session runs
from October to June, with up to 8 meetings per year (most of
which are open to non-members and organists of all or no
denomination), and our objectives are “the education of its
members and the public in the art of music, with special
reference to organ and choral music”. In this most
Scottish Charity No SC001591 challenging of sessions, we have opted for on-line events,
each opening with a pre-recorded presentation on YouTube,
followed by a live Zoom meeting (a “Q & A” session with the presenter and an opportunity for members to
share their news). This digital approach has enabled other options not normally possible – eg a composite
recital comprising 5 organs in 4 different churches – whilst also allowing participation by members
living/holidaying at a distance, or with other commitments. We greatly look forward to “normal service”
being resumed at some point in session 2021-22.
In 1928, under the Presidency of J B Crawford, the Society donated a trophy to be awarded annually at
Glasgow Music Festival (“organ solos - open”); previous trophy holders have included two former GSO
Presidents. In 2016 the Society became a corporate member of Glasgow Music Festival, with which it is
delighted to be associated.
The GSO is affiliated to both the IAO (Incorporated Association of Organists) and to the Scottish Federation
of Organists (SFO).
The GSO wishes Glasgow Music Festival well in this most unusual “virtual” year.

Welcome
Glasgow Music Festival is pleased to present the one hundred and ninth Festival. Due to
the continuing coronavirus health emergency resulting in public events and performances
not being permitted, the festival is smaller and has a different format. We hope ‘normal
service’ will be resumed in 2022!

The objective of the Festival remains to promote and develop interest and participation
in performing arts. This year, performers have submitted videos and these will be
appraised by a team of leading professional adjudicators. In addition to written comments
from the adjudicator, every group or soloist taking part receives a Certificate of Performance.
Performers may also elect to receive marks and may qualify for special certificates, bursaries
or awards.
All tasks in the organisation and administration of Glasgow Music Festival are undertaken
by a team of dedicated volunteers who work throughout the year and commit considerable
amounts of time and skill. During the festival, a large number of voluntary stewards join the
team. All money collected in entry fees, admission and advertising charges, and raised by
Glasgow Music Festival Association through members’ subscriptions, sponsorship and
donations, is applied directly in running and promoting the Festival.

The historic emblem, which we call the festival ‘seal’, was created one hundred years ago.
It was designed by William Gordon and adopted by Glasgow Music Festival Association
(known then as Glasgow Musical Festival Association) in 1921. Originally, the seal was
reproduced on Festival certificates and programmes but over the years it has become the
symbol of the Festival and it now appears on a wide range of Festival media.
Incorporated in the seal are representations of:
The City of Glasgow: the elements of the Coat of Arms of the City of Glasgow depicting
St Mungo, the City’s Patron Saint, along with the (oak) tree that never grew, the (robin)
bird that never flew, the (ring-holding) fish that never swam and the bell that never rang.
The National Flowers of the Nations of United Kingdom: Scotland represented by the
Thistle; England by the Tudor Rose; Northern Ireland by the Shamrock; and Wales by the
Daffodil; an acknowledgement that performers (in particular choirs at the time the seal was
designed) came from all parts of the United Kingdom to take part in Glasgow Music Festival.
St Cecilia: the patron saint of music and musicians.
Orpheus: the legendary Greek musician, poet, and prophet who could charm all living
things with his music.

About the adjudicators . . .

Jonathan Rea studied music at the University of Cambridge where he studied piano
with Peter Pettinger, sang in the University Chamber Choir, achieved choral and
instrumental awards and won the Rima Alamuddin prize for piano performance.
Following 10 years as Director of Music in Bangor Grammar School, his career
broadened, encompassing conducting, producing, writing, composing, arranging and
accompanying for the BBC, Belfast City Council and various other bodies, including Songs
of Praise and the Belfast Choir for Children in Need.
He is Chief Executive and Creative Director of New Irish Arts and is increasingly in
demand as a writer and speaker, contributing to programmes such as Prayer for the Day
and Morning Service, on BBC Radio 4. As an adjudicator member of the British and
International Federation of Festivals, he finds it immensely satisfying to play a part in
helping performers, young and old, pursue their musical potential.

Stephen Adam studied cello with Joan Dickson and piano with Miles Coverdale at the
Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (then the RSAMD), winning prizes for composition,
chamber music and lieder before continuing studies under Raphael Sommer at the Royal
Northern College of Music where he gained an ARCM with honours. After working as
pianist and arranger in Spain, Stephen spent a year freelancing with various UK
orchestras before joining the orchestra of Scottish Opera in 1981 as assistant principal
cello. Stephen has also enjoyed a career on the music club circuit, performing string
quartets, gypsy trios and accompanying singers.
As a composer, in addition to a quartet commissioned to celebrate the bicentenary of
Robert Adam's Culzean Castle, Stephen’s commissions include a suite for cello and
strings based on Hebridean songs, orchestrations for Celtic Connections and for the
BBC's Songs of Praise. Stephen now runs a community choir in Argyll for whom he has
written over 120 choral arrangements, from Mahler to the Bee Gees, and when not
performing for Music in Care, he is trying to master the piano accordion!

Gillian Fleetwood cut her teeth playing Scottish traditional music in her hometown
of Inverness. She is best known as a harp player but is passionate about songs and
arrangements and has collaborated with many Scottish musicians.
Musical life so far has brought performances and tutoring at many international events
including Ohio Scottish Arts Summer School, The National Celtic Festival (Australia),
Harfentreffen (Germany), and Rencontres Internationales de Harpes Celtiques (Brittany).
She enjoys tutoring closer to home at various prestigious institutions such as Fèis Gleann
Albainn, Fèis Spè, Fèis Rois, The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the University of
the Highlands and Islands.
Gillian is also trained in adjudication and is an examiner for the RCS Traditional Music
Grade Exams.
