FREEDOM – Learning and Research
                  Philosophies

                                     LEARNING PHILOSOPHY
            The FREEDOM Institute of Higher Education believes high quality learning is:

                                Supported by a coherent philosophy;
                                        Theoretically logical;
                                     Underpinned by research;
                                   Culturally and learner relevant;
                                          Valid in practice;
                                            Fit for purpose;
                                              Interactive;
                                               Authentic;
                        Holistic and enjoyable from a learner’s perspective.

This philosophy is underpinned by holistic (Durie, 1994), experiential (Kolb, 2001), socio-cultural
(Vygotsky, 1978) socio ecological (Bronfenbrenner, 1986), student centred (Rogers, 1989),
multiple intelligences (Gardner, 1993) and Treaty of Waitangi research (Bishop & Graham, 1986)
theoretical/conceptual and practice-based evidence and scholarly literature (Graham, 2006).

THE ABOVE LEARNING PHILOSOPHY IS LIVED IN TWO WAYS:
 1. All programmes offered by the Institute are underpinned by work-integrated, work-based,
     experiential or practice-based learning approaches which support study to work transitions.
2. All learning is facilitated by qualified Educational Facilitators who understand and use the
    Institute’s effective learning philosophy and unique learning approach. The Educational
    Facilitation approach used was developed by the New Zealand Curriculum Design Institute
    and is now available nationally and internationally.

Faculty take pride in supporting, optimising and accelerating your learning achievements and
will make learning personally meaningful and enjoyable. Institute personnel provide holistically
responsive and customised support to each learner to ensure their personal learning journey
progress and growth. Learner ethnicity, gender, age, culture and experience are respected in
the warm and tolerant institute environment.

                                 FREEDOM - RESEARCH PHILOSOPHY

               The FREEDOM Institute of Higher Education believes quality research is:

                                   Philosophically aware and open;
                      Underpinned by theory or supportive of its development;
                Informed by past research evidence while seeking new knowledge;
                                  Ethnically and culturally respectful;
                        Valid in practice and respectful of practice findings;
                                              Significant;
                                                Robust;
                                                Critical;
                                                Ethical;
    and disseminated to those who can benefit from it in an accurate, accessible and honest manner.
