Article by Tim Walker CRAIG LYNN Craig Lynn is a man that has quietly achieved in the sport of Harness Racing. He has a lot more he wants to achieve, and he isn’t planning on letting anything stand in his way of reaching the goals he has set for himself. As an owner, Lynn has featured on Harness Racing’s night of nights, with star mare The Parade taking out the Group 1 Mares Classic on Inter Dominion Grand Final night in 2016. But perhaps Lynn’s two biggest chances to stamp himself as one of the more prominent names in Harness Racing have come on one of Western Australia’s premier winter nights of racing at Gloucester Park, the Westbred Finals night. In 2017, he won the Westbred Two-Year-Old Colts and Geldings Classic with Highroller Joe, while Rosies Ideal finished third in the fillies edition. Finishing with a Group 1 winner and third placegetter was a big thrill for Lynn, and, arguably, his best night at Gloucester Park. Little did he know he would be able to top that achievement one year on. With the pair a year older and more experienced, they went just as well in the three-year-old editions of the lucrative Westbred races. Highroller Joe finished an admirable second to One Off Delight, before Rosies Ideal upstaged a high quality group of fillies in their edition of the Group 1 event. Having bred both Rosies Ideal and Highroller Joe, both nights were special for Lynn, but he said 2018 just eclipsed 2017, with both horses finishing top two. “Breeding both of them makes nights like that special,” he said. “I’ve bred a fair few horses, and had a bit of luck with it along the way. “I’ve had some good nights at the track, but to have a night like that this year, it’s definitely up there. “I’m pretty lucky to have two years in a row like this with horses you breed.” From an early age, Lynn was prepared to make significant sacrifices to achieve his goals. After spending his early childhood in Busselton, Lynn made the move to Perth to further his development as a Hockey player. RACING AHEAD HARNESS - July 3
Craig Lynn “I moved to Perth when I was 13 and I trained every day when I was a kid,” he said. Highroller Joe “My parents stayed at home but my brother lived in Perth at the time. “I went to a good Hockey school, Como Secondary College, and it was all about Hockey in Phys Ed and I made a few in roads there. “I played Junior World Cup for Australia, and attended the Australian Institute of Sport, and the West Australian Institute of Sport until I was 22.” After pursuing a Hockey career, Lynn was forced to return to Busselton for work and financial reasons. Between attending school and playing Hockey, another passion of Lynn’s was bubbling away, Harness Racing. Image courtesy of Gloucester Park/Scott Hamilton Media Standing next to the parade ring at Gloucester Park on a Friday night, Lynn’s passion and love for the sport was evident, and he explained how it all started with a few quiet bets. breeding…the incentive scheme is pretty big. “Betting was the first thing that came up, when I was young I “I’ve been to a few places to scout around and have a look at used to love a punt,” he said. different horses. “I love coming to the trots on a Friday night. “It’s a great feeling to breed one from day dot and watching them go right through.” “I haven’t ever trained horses, but I’ve always been spending time with them.” Lynn’s success with horses he has bred over the past 12 months has him wanting to take the next step. Family involvement in the sport has also been a big factor in Lynn wanting to get involved in the sport. He now has eyes on starting a training career. Finding the time to train horses has been the challenge for “Given I was a sportsperson in the old days, I like that Lynn, who runs a tree lopping business in Busselton, and competitiveness and the excitement of it, as well as the hard is often required to work for high profile companies like work that goes into it.” Western Power. ELSTEVO - BY ACCIDENT OR FATE? Izabelle Siegwart is not the type to do anything by halves. So, whilst on a trail ride and stumbling across an underfed & neglected retired pacer in a paddock, it was all or nothing for Izzy. With the support of her family Izzy approached the owner and asked if she could start feeding the retired pacer, who she now refers to as ‘Shadow’. Feeding Shadow each day soon led to spending more and more time with him and the realisation he was a nice horse and Izzy soon felt confident enough to entertain the thought of riding him. Using her little brother as the crash test dummy, it became apparent Shadow had the potential to become a suitable riding horse and upon request, the owner surrendered the horse to Izzy. That was back in 2010, it’s now 2018 and Shadow has rewarded Izzy and her family tenfold for their kindness and dedication. Shadow has since done everything, he tries his heart out at anything asked of him. From Show Jumping to Cross Country, Tetrathlon, Barrel Racing, The Blackwood Marathon and even teaching a five year old how to ride at Pony Club, there is nothing he won’t give his all to. Izzy says after Shadow finding his way into our family completely by accident he has taught me so much and forever leaves me in awe of his enormous heart. “Love, love, love this horse and how versatile he is – he is an absolute ripper Off the Track horse,” said Izzy. Shadow will spend the entirety of his life with the Siegwart family being very much loved and rewarded for the joy he brings to his family. RACING AHEAD HARNESS - July 7
INTEGRATED FOOTBALL PROGRAM A team of sixteen football players from WA with Intellectual Disabilities competed at the AFL National Inclusion Carnival in Launceston Tasmania, last month. Community TAB is a sponsor of the WA team for the second year in a row to support them in the week-long event of AFL, against every other state in the country, which culminated with finals and selection of the All Australian Team. The players were chosen from the West Australian Amateur Football League (WAAFL) Integrated Football Program. The WAAFL’s Integrated Football Program has entered its eighth year of providing opportunities for players with Intellectual Disabilities to play AFL at their local club, and in 2018 the introduction of North Beach and Willetton Clubs has bolstered the program to nine competing Teams and over 200 players. COUNT ME IN Community TAB is sponsor of the broadcast of the first Integrated Football game to be broadcast for Count Me In round in July. The ’Count Me In’ round is a particularly special one in the WAFL calendar, as it showcases the wonderful work done at community level by a number of clubs to integrate disadvantaged and people with disabilities to participate in sport. Community TAB agreed to support the coverage and promotion of this game as part of our ongoing support to the Integrated Football Program in WA. The game is on July 14 at Steel Blue Oval. NETBALL WA NAIDOC CARNIVAL Community TAB and Community TAB volunteers will be at the NAIDOC Netball Carnival in Perth in July as a sponsor of the Netball WA Aboriginal Programs. As part of NAIDOC week celebrations, Indigenous netball players from across WA are invited to participate in the annual NAIDOC Netball Carnival, the largest indigenous netball event in Australia. Held at the State Netball Centre, and staged in conjunction with the Department of Sport and Recreation, the NAIDOC Netball Carnival is both an opportunity to introduce indigenous netballers to competitive netball, as well as a platform to increase awareness and education around health promotion, health prevention and care benefits for Indigenous people. 8 July - RACING AHEAD HARNESS

BOTRA News Content provided by BOTRA CLARIFICATION OF DRIVING FEES ADDRESSED BY RWWA A driver will receive a driving fee when they are actually on the BOTRA has requested consideration and further discussion on the track (not the course) so if a horse is scratched at the barrier the initiative for 2 YO racing to commence in November each year to driver gets a driving fee. A driver’s fee will not be paid for a late assist with better field sizes. This matter is in the early discussion scratching. This ruling seems inappropriate as a driver may have stage but your thoughts on this initiative are welcomed by BOTRA driven a long way for one drive and should receive some form of so please have your say! compensation. BOTRA believes this matter should be addressed by BOTRA has requested a review of the ambulance procedures at all RWWA with HRA to address and rectify this anomaly tracks. Consideration for the ambulance to follow the field at all In the case of abandoned meetings, currently the Harness Racing tracks was requested and that a qualified Medical Officer be in the Manager has the discretion to pay driving fees. A single driving fee mobile barrier which is the first vehicle attending the scene of any will be paid to drivers with a drive or drives at meetings abandoned racetrack accidents. on late notice as some form of compensation for travel costs, rather than any attempt to defray the loss of earnings for driver’s fees. Response from the Stewards In relation to the suggestion from BOTRA that the Ambulance follow the field or a Medical Officer ride in the mobile, I provide the following information In 2017 the Stewards implemented new procedures in relation to race falls. These new procedures, which were endorsed by the Integrity Assurance Committee, provide guidance to Stewards in relation to decision making when there is a race fall. As you would be aware, not all race falls result in a driver requiring immediate medical attention or the race being stopped. With any race fall, the first people in attendance are the Starter and Mobile Driver and they are in contact with the Steward in charge via two-way radio and provide information on the condition of the driver. All RWWA Stewards, Starters and Mobile Drivers have current First Aid Certificates and are able to assess a driver’s condition and render first aid. In the recent case of Mr Ciuppa at Gloucester Park the Starter and Mobile Driver were first on the scene (as the Mobile follows the field) and provided immediate assistance to Mr Ciuppa. In the event of a race fall, safety is the first consideration of Stewards. That includes the safety of the fallen driver, other drivers in the race, officials on the track, ambulance officers and horses. Stewards must ensure that any decision they make when there is a fall, does not result in a further risk to the safety of others. As you would understand, Ambulance Officers have no understanding of racing, the race fall procedures of Stewards or the dangers of a driverless horse. I have personally witnessed dangerous situations in other States where the Ambulance Officers have decided to drive the Ambulance onto the track during a race because they saw a driver dislodged. However, having said all that, the Stewards are still undertaking a review of Ambulance procedures at every track. Every track is different with some still retaining the old running rail inside the marker pegs and some having obstructions on the infield such as waterways, infrastructure, football fields, cricket pitches, greyhound tracks, which will prevent the Ambulance following the field on the infield. In wet weather, multiple vehicles driving on the track can result in the track deteriorating and racing having to be abandoned. All these things have to be taken into consideration if new procedures are put in place for the Ambulance. I will advise BOTRA once the review is finalised. Regards Barbara Scott, Chief Steward, Harness Your views and any suggestions on this matter are welcomed. BELL LAP @ghall27 TUESDAY 9AM TABradio.com.au 10 July - RACING AHEAD HARNESS

WASBA News Content provided by WASBA LOTS OF WINNERS It’s been a very exciting period for our feature two and three year old races with some fantastic races, and unusually, they have all been won by different horses. Thanks to RWWA the three year old Westsired Classics were split, with victory going to Veiled Secret (Tinted Cloud) and Harry Haich (Parsons Den). Veiled Secret’s sire is the sire of the mighty Smoken Up 1:48.5 74 wins $3.6 million in stakes, and she is a half-sister to Sheer Rocknroll (Rocknroll Hanover) 1:55.9 22wins $303,715 out of the Ross Torre bred mare Sheer Royalty (Parsons Den) 1:55.7 $248,904. Sheer Royalty was the winner of the 2009 WA Oaks, Daintys Daughter Classic and the 3yo Fillies State Sires Series (now the Westsired) for her year, so quite fitting that her daughter should win the Westsired for the three year old fillies. Veiled Secret, who is an eighth generation Westsired filly, has been improving at every start and should have a bright future for owner breeder Bob Fowler. Harry Haich, who is also a product of Ross Torre’s Royalstar Farm, absolutely delighted his connections with his win, who was a 2016 yearling sale purchase for Ron Huston and Vicki Lea. He is out of Jay Emms Sister (Northern Luck) who was a half-sister to James Matthew (Parsons Den) 1:58.7 12 wins $240,981. James Matthew won 10 of his 11 starts in his two-year-old season. The aforementioned Group 1 $100,000 two year old Pearl was a classy race. All of the runners acquitted themselves very well, with relative newcomer Franco Edward (American Ideal) starting favourite after getting the prized one barrier and duly leading in a very fast 1:56.4, at only his fourth race start. Very commendable efforts from Shock Wave in running three wide for over a lap to run second, and the fast finishing Its Rock And Roll running third. Great training and driving effort from Kyle Harper, and owner Robert Watson has got another very nice American Ideal colt! We shouldn’t forget the first ever $50,000 three year old Pearl, brilliantly won by Jack Mac (Mach Three) making it a historic double for him after winning the $100,000 two year old Pearl last year. In what could be called dreadful conditions, it was a brilliant return to racing for Jack Mac who has had several setbacks this preparation. The two year old Westsired was a $30,000 single race with Babyface Adda (Rich And Spoilt), bred and owned by Harry Capararo bringing up a well-deserved win as well as trainer Ross Olivieri’s 100th win. The placegetters My Prayer (Renaissance Man) and Sheza Spoilt Miss (Rich And Spoilt) also ran great races. Babyface Adda has a lot to live up to with his dam Sonatina (Art Major) being a half-sister to New Zealand two year old and three year old Filly of the Year and multiple Group 1 winner One Dream (Dream Away) 1:56.7 $846,467. WASBA COUNTRY OAKS Another intriguing Country Oaks, going right down to the wire for the decision. With the support of Bunbury Trotting Club and the harness office at RWWA, the $25,000 WASBA Country Oaks got under way on Saturday 2 June. The race turned into a real battle between the favourite Cott Beach, and second favourite De La Tourbie. Congratulations to Peter King and Barbara Pellick, trainer Kristy Elson and driver Nathan Turvey. 3YO $100,000 WESTBRED CLASSICS It was a very strong race in the $100,000 Fillies three year old Westbred Classic and there were multiple good choices as the winner, but Rosies Ideal (American Ideal) took home the bounty after a very strong finish to run over the top of De La Tourbie and Arma Rich Girl. It was about this time last year Rosies Ideal won the $35,000 Gold Bracelet so it’s not a surprise that she has the talent to go on to bigger and better things. Owner breeders Craig and Allan Lynn also raced her New Zealand dam so it’s great to see Rosie rewarding them. The colts and geldings $100,000 three year old Westbred Classic went to the favourite One Off Delight (Bettors Delight) who was confidently driven by Gary Jnr. Second went to Highroller Joe who was a little unlucky, having been held back by the winner until it was too late. Liam Neil put in a great effort to be a fast finishing third after looking like he would miss a place in the field. Congratulations to all runners. Breeders of the first three finishers in the $100,000 Westbred Classics receive $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000 respectively. 14 July - RACING AHEAD HARNESS
WASBA News LAURIE KENNEDY 4 & 5YO WESTBRED MARES In a field that included some very nice mares, five year old mare Mary Catherine (Art Major) was third in the betting behind the Annie Belton trained Gotta Go Gabbana and Dior Mia More, but proved to be too strong for this pair in the run to the finish after some astute driving from Aiden De Campo who had her well placed throughout. Mary Catherine won from the fast finishing Dior Mia More and a brave Gotta Go Gabbana who breezed. OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES There have been some terrific performances by our WA bred horses and here is just a few of them. Eight year old mare Eagle Rox (Bettors Delight) has been in brilliant form since returning after a two and a half year absence that included producing a foal. Bred, owned and trained by Debra Lewis, Eagle Rox has won five from seven and over $61,000 this season. Eagle Rox was the winner of the 2012 two year old Fillies Diamond Classic and was third in the 2012 Golden Slipper. Her unraced dam Lovera (Badlands Hanover) is also the dam of Artemis Belle (Artiscape) 1:56.1 $359,559, with her 19 wins including the 2010 two year old Fillies Sales Classic, Gold Bracelet, three year old Fillies Sales Classic, Daintys Daughter Classic and WA Oaks. Another WA bred horse going great guns is Our Zak Whitby (Mach Three) who has had an absolutely brilliant season with just shy of $100,000. In May he scooted over the 1730m in 1:53.3, with breeder part owner and trainer Ed Dewar having a very good season. Ed isn’t afraid to use juniors with the most recent win being with Jocelyn Young. Congratulations Ed! This time last year we were talking about Vultan Tin (Dawn Ofa New Day) winning the $30,000 Narrogin Cup. Hasn’t he gone on from then! In poor conditions he ran 1:55.5 to win the GPHR Members Sprint. So far this season he has won nearly $168,000 and his career tally is over $333,000. Congratulations to Denise and Phil Costello, breeders and owners (and trainer) of Vultan Tin. WITH HELP FROM OUR SPONSORS Our sponsors provide valuable support and assistance throughout the year, by giving us funds to support you in your racing and breeding endeavours.
