Remembering D-Day Paris & Normandy With Jack Herney, Instructor in History, Emeritus April 22–29, 2022
Dear Members of the Exeter Family, On June 6, 1944, more than 130,000 Allied troops braved the choppy waters of the English Channel to step ashore on the beaches of Normandy. These courageous servicemen and women launched a two-month crusade that changed the course of history, freeing Europe from the grip of unspeakable tyranny during World War II. In April 2022, join me and fellow members of the Exeter family to experience the rich legacy of D-Day on a weeklong journey from Paris to France’s northern coast. As a student of the First and Second World Wars who has led many tours of this region for Exeter, I am excited to guide you through the fabled battlefields, memorials, and museums that vividly bring the events surrounding D-Day to life. For additional depth and context, we will also explore the region’s medieval history, from a viewing of the awe-inspiring Bayeux Tapestry to an excursion to Rouen, home to a Gothic cathedral made famous in paintings by Claude Monet. Starting at the World War II sites of Paris, we will trace the story of D-Day to Normandy’s landing beaches, visiting the German battery at Longues-sur-Mer, the monuments of Omaha Beach, and the 100-foot-high cliffs of Pointe du Hoc, site of a dramatic D-Day battle. We will tour a fascinating museum built around a German bunker on Utah Beach and discover Sainte-Mère-Église, the first French town liberated by Allied troops. This will be an interactive and immersive trip, with daily Harkness TRAVELING WITH YOU discussions that will deepen your appreciation of the many sites we will visit.
