Dear Friends & Fellow Deer Farmers,
This year we are proud to bring to you a very high-quality
offering of 22 lots of 2 and 3 year old stags, and yearling hinds
for our 2021 Sale. In our Velvet and Trophy stags this year we
have been able to shift to offering all 3 year olds. We have
catalogued a slightly reduced offering of these and in doing
so have been able to keep the quality very high. We are very
pleased to see how our young stags are progressing and the
gains being made. As can be seen by the photos, our Black
Forest bred sire Alonso has made a huge jump from his 4
year old head which scored 704 last year to this year's 5 year old head. We have a full
brother to Alonso on offer as lot 3.
Our growth rate stags this year are without a doubt, the best we have ever offered, a
testament to the genetic gains we are making through our breeding program. With lot 8
weighing 254kg in mid-December, and our total offering of Growth Rate stags averaging
217kg at this time, we are very pleased with the lineup. These stags are ideally suited
to progressive breeding and finishing Venison production systems focused on early
slaughter.
We are confident you will be successful in selecting fine young Sires to enhance the
future direction and profitability of your herd and wish you luck with your purchases.
Genetics is a long-term investment, and this year will undoubtedly bring opportunities
for prudent purchasers to acquire fantastic quality animals at exceptional value, this is
a great time to invest in your herd. As always, we welcome any pre-sale enquiries and will
be happy to show you the line-up.
All of the animals offered for sale will be tested for Johne's disease pre-sale and will be
pre movement Tb tested as is required. Both our properties have a Tb herd status of C10.
It is encouraging to see that with the proven Covid vaccines being rolled out there is
confidence the world will soon be back to a new normal. Farmers can remain hopeful
that within the year, demand for our export products and high-end tourism should
return.
The Covid pandemic has changed the way many of us do business, and this year we
have made the decision to take our sale online. The format of our 2021 sale will be a live
hybrid auction held on farm and on the bidr® platform. If you are intending to follow or
purchase online, we would encourage you to familiarise yourself with this service and
register an account through your stock firm well in advance of the sale. Instructions can
be found at the back of the catalogue.
This year we are pleased to be holding an afternoon sale with a start time of 4:30pm. We
will be offering light refreshments pre-sale and warmly invite you to stay on and enjoy
our BBQ and hospitality at the completion of the sale.

Vendor Sale Conditions 2021
1. Black Forest Park retains a third party marketing condition on semen, for the
CONDITIONS OF SALE
Lots offered in our 2021 Sire catalogue for a period of 4 years, transferable
should the stag be sold within that period.
2. No animals, embryos or semen sold by Black Forest Park, or their germplasm, any
subsequent progeny or germplasm, including the semen and germplasm of that
progeny may be supplied to a third party without the written permission of the
stud.
3. This condition does not affect normal commercial deer farming or stud farming
or the normal sales of semen or embryos as it only applies to entities with the
primary function of commercial semen/germplasm activities.
4. It is a condition of sale of any animals, embryos, germplasm or semen sold by
Black Forest Park, that the purchaser agrees to include the following clause
as a condition of any subsequent sale or gift of any animal, embryo, semen,
germplasm or subsequent progeny or germplasm to a third party - “the
purchaser acknowledges that it will not supply any animals, embryos, semen or
germplasm to any commercial semen/germplasm marketing or sales entity, and
will ensure that this clause is inserted as a condition of any sale or gift of any
animals, embryos, semen or germplasm.”
5. The sale will be conducted by PGG Wrightson with the conditions of sale as set
down by the Stock & Station Agents Association, a copy of which is exhibited in
the office on sale day.
6. The deer are the purchaser’s property and risk at the fall of the hammer.
7. Warranties and Insurance are covered under separate headings.
8. Terms are strictly cash unless prior arrangements are made with the
auctioneers. Accounts not paid within 14 days of sale shall bear interest, at
current rate per annum from the date of sale.
9. The sale is conducted exclusive of GST.
10. Overriding commission is payable to non-participating companies and
recognised independent agents introducing and accompanying purchasers to
the sale providing prior arrangements are made with PGG Wrightson.
11. Sale animals in velvet will have velvet removed after the sale, which will remain
the property of the vendor.
12. Intending purchasers are required to register with the auctioneers prior to the
commencement of the sale.
13. DeerSelect Breeding values represented on sale animals are current as of
11 December 2019.

For new deer farmers or farmers purchasing a
new sire for the first time, we offer the following
suggestions for the care and management of new
and existing Sire Stags.
Remember your Sire Stags are the future of
your herd, they carry the genetics for the future
quality and production of your herd. Good stags
are worth looking after!
Arrival of new stags
As deer develop strong social structures in their
groups there can be a degree of stress involved
in taking young stags from their mobs, and
transporting them to a new property and herd.
However this can be minimised with a little understanding and common sense.
Stags should be selected early and shifted to your property before the end of
January if at all possible, to allow time to settle and adjust prior to the rut. Ideally
the stag should be introduced to a small group of say 15 stags of his own age as soon
as he arrives - this should be done in the yards rather than let the new stag out by
himself (new stags should never be left in the yards by themselves). Alternatively
the stag could be put with hinds, but young stags should not be put in with older
groups of Stags or Spikers. This method will minimise stress & assist the stag to
settle quickly in his new environment.
Mating Stags
Out with hinds for single sire mating by 10th March or if using Eastern Stags by
the 1st of March to take advantage of their potential early mating and calving
characteristics.
2yr stags should easily mate 25-30 hinds, 3yr stags 40 hinds, older stags approx 50
hinds.
A stag can often mate more hinds than this, but this may increase calving spread
and body weight loss with a marked loss of production performance from the stag.
Mating mobs should always have a paddock between and yearling hinds should
always be mated separately.
If using backup sires these should go out after two cycles or 36 days and the original
sires go to their own separate paddock.
Stags out
Approx 10th May take stags out from the hinds one at a time, and put to their
separate Sires’ paddock with good saved grass. Start with the dominant Sire first
and work down to the youngest. This procedure helps minimise fighting and bullying
of the younger stags.
Maintenance
Sire stags should be regarded as at least six stock units, and well supplemented with
high energy feed over winter, especially in the south.
A good level of care will help ensure the owner is rewarded with fit, healthy stags
