Soccer Power Ranking Playoff Divisions 2022-2023 All CIF Southern Section Soccer Schools have been ranked based on the following information • 2020-2021 Power Points earned (based on formula provided) (20% value) • 2021-2022 Power Points earned (based on formula provided) (80% value) The CIFSS Soccer Advisory Committee has moved to a new system for playoff groupings. Using “Massey Ratings”, divisional placement was done where teams can be compared through common opponents far removed. This system is used in many collegiate sports (football, soccer, lacrosse) and has been used successfully in the Southern Section in other sports since the inception of competitive equity playoff divisions. You are encouraged to visit the Massey site at masseyratings.com where there are links to FAQs and other information regarding the system. In addition, the year we are experimenting with a combination division between Divisions 1 and 2; this is something that has been done in other sports. Teams placed in the combination D1/2 will be assessed via “in season” results along with advisory committee input. At the end of regular season competition, the top 16 teams will move into the Division 1 bracket with the remaining qualifiers bracketed in Division 2. Rational: 1. The column labeled “PWR. Ranking (20%/80%)” is the one used to place teams in the 2022-2023 soccer playoff divisions. This is the schools two-year weighted average over that two-year period using the Massey System. 2. Based upon a two-year weighted power point total. The 2020-2021 season was given a 20% weighted value and the 2021-2022 season was given an 80% weighted value. 3. Strength of the regular season results and playoff performance results over the last two seasons. 4. Regular season contests are not weighted while playoff contests are weighted based upon the round where the match up took place. 5. Division splits are based upon a two-year average of automatic playoff entry bids required to fill a 32-team bracket.
6. Teams that are in “RED” while they have been placed in a playoff division for the purpose of opponents who play them are ineligible for the playoffs because they failed to submit the two-year information as required by the CIF bylaw. 7. Teams that are marked “TBD” are new programs and will have their schedule and results evaluated at the mid-point of the season and then be placed accordingly.

San Gabriel D7 3.74• Inputs The system considers the outcome of each game. Optionally, some games may be assigned more or less weight than usual (e.g. playoffs vs. regular season). All games are analyzed in concert, so that the impressiveness of each win is constantly being re-evaluated in light of the other results. • Model The mathematical rating model is based on maximizing the retrospective probability of the observed game results. Each outcome generates a “force” on the teams involved, attempting to push the winner above the loser. But as the algorithm adjusts the ratings to create an equilibrium, a ripple effect occurs throughout the entire network of teams. Opponents’ opponents’ opponents’ … ad infinitum are influenced be some degree. By chains of interaction, it is possible to compare teams that are geographically dispersed. • Margin of Victory Each game score is translated to a probability that the winner is really the better team. A narrow win might translate to 58%, while a blowout of gives 98%. The cap of 100% enforces diminishing returns to running up the score. • Pace The model does not discriminate against styles of plat that result in fewer total points. In football for example, a team that typically wins games 24-10 may be considered more impressive than a team that wins 49-31 barnburners. These numbers are made relative to scoring models per sport. • Strength of Schedule Each team is measured by its performance relative to the opposition faced. Ratings are strength of schedule and calculated simultaneously so that schematically rating = performance + strength of schedule. The model is able to accurately compare, for example, a team that went 9-1 against weak competition to a team that went 6-4 against a brutal schedule. • Mismatches The model drives most of its information from games between teams of similar strength. There should be no incentive to scheduling inferior opponents. Since there is limited reward to wins and potentially a large downside in the unlikely event of an upset. With regard to strength of schedule, it is more difficult for an elite team to face #2 and #100 than to face #39 and #40. • Head-to-Head Sometimes lower ranked teams defeat higher ranked teams. These “upsets” are inevitable and should be tolerated since each team is rated according to its entire “body of work”. A single head-to-head result is not always consistent with rankings derived as a best fit for the entire season. • Objectivity All teams are treated equally and anonymously, without regard to name brands or affiliations. The system can assess bad or mediocre teams just as well as the teams at the top.
• Rating and Power A team’s rating is designed to reward the most impressive resumes, giving more credit to wins, regardless of how dominant they were. In contrast, the “Power” of a team is more indicative of the true strength of the team. The power of a team is broken in to offensive and defensive components, which can be combined to forecast typical scores for a given matchup, as well as the associated probabilities of winning.
