From the Rector
With winter well and truly upon us, the winter codes in full
swing, a successful senior production and the Interschools under way,
a lot is happening for our boys at the moment.
As we begin the winter season, it is timely to encourage our young men
to get involved. There are a huge number of activities for the boys to
get involved in and we believe that a good all-round education
includes participation in co-curricular activities.
There is always a perception that boys’ schools only care about sport. While sport is important to so
many of our young men, the cultural and performing arts side of the school is also strong.
On that note, congratulations to the cast and crew of the senior production, ‘Rock of Ages’. It was yet
another high-quality production and the young men and women involved did a superb job. Well done
to Mr Buick and his team on an outstanding production.
We are indeed fortunate as a school community to have staff and parent helpers willing to commit
themselves to providing so many opportunities for our young men. It is important to have our staff as
coaches and managers and that we continue to develop these whole relationships with the young men
of SBHS. My thanks to all those involved for their commitment.
At this point of the winter season, when we have so many teams involved in competitions, whether they
be local, regional or national, I will make comment about side-line behaviour. We have all,
unfortunately, likely witnessed some appalling behaviour from so-called supporters on the side-lines
who think it their right to abuse the match official or opposition players. This is intolerable and
embarrassing. At school, we discuss our expectations of our teams and our young men and it is
important that these be supported at home and on the side-lines. Always remember the boys are
involved in sport for their enjoyment, not yours.
Please remember the following points:
Set an example – applaud good play and good effort.
Do not criticise team members or opponents for making a mistake.

Criticism of referees or umpires is unacceptable – officials give freely of their time and
effort and do not deserve to be harassed by people on the side-line.
Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities.
Do not come on to the field of play; do not enter changing rooms. No parents in halftime
huddles.
Recognise the value of coaches and managers who give their time to provide
opportunities for our young men.
At the heart of the matter is that we want our young men playing because they enjoy playing. They do
not want to be embarrassed by the conduct of family members or supporters on the side of the field.
Not everyone will be a national representative; it is important to keep that in mind to provide a
realistic context. It is important to remember also that not all staff members will be the next national
coach and yet some on the side-line think it their right to criticise team selection and offer uninvited
advice; not every referee or umpire will be a professional. We want to encourage all those involved
to stay involved.
We must continue to cherish and support the wide range of opportunities available within our
community and understand what makes a boys’ only school special.
Education is a hot political topic at present and an important review of NCEA is underway, amongst

Mid-year progress reports will be made available to you by the end of the Term and parent teacher
interviews will take place early next term. In the meantime I encourage you to stay up to date with
your young man’s progress via the parent portal and if you have any questions please make contact
with our staff.
The SBHS staff and community wish Mrs Alice Hildebrand (Room 13) and her family our best wishes
as she starts her maternity leave this term and looks forward to the birth of her first child. It is a
very exciting time Mrs Hildebrand and we all await news, photos and visits.

Engagement Reporting
We are continuing to make available via the Student and Parent Portal, regular updates of your son’s level of
effort and engagement in his various subjects. This is being monitored for him here at school as well. We are
asking teachers to make at least one entry for the subject(s) they teach him every week using the scale:
Fully engaged
Some engagement
or Disengaged
We consider your son to be fully engaged if he is:
prepared for each lesson (with appropriate stationery or gear)
completing set tasks or activities in class
participating positively in class discussion or group work
making a satisfactory effort to complete any homework given.
To see how your son is performing in his classes, we encourage you to regularly sign in at the Portal
(https://portal.sbhs.school.nz) and from the Menu choose Results and then Class Efforts. You can
monitor Engagement levels over time for individual subjects by clicking on the relevant subject name (see
below for an example).
We encourage you to make contact with the appropriate teacher(s) if you have any concerns about
engagement levels in any subject(s).

The Main Office/Reception is open Monday-Friday 8.00am until 4.00pm. At the moment the uniform shop (Main
Office) is open at the same time for new and second-hand uniform, but hours will be changing Term 3.

Public Health Nurse
Hello, I’m Sarah Liggins-Walters the Public Health Nurse for Boys’ High school. I offer a confidential and
private nurse service for any health, wellbeing or social concerns you may be worried about. This includes
general health, relationship worries, sexual health, mood/emotions, smoking, diet, drug/alcohol and vision. I
visit every Monday afternoon 2.15-3.15pm and am based in the guidance counsellor area. This is a drop in
service so no need to make an appointment. Feel free to drop in or contact me on 027 2990788. I look forward
to meeting with you.
Kumagaya Koko
It is the time again for the biennial visit of our brother school, Kumagaya Koko (Kumagaya Boys’ High School)
from Japan.
Since 1995, every second year a group of students and teachers from Kumagaya Koko have visited Southland
Boys’ High School. The students are aged 15 to 17 years old and have been studying English for three or more
years. They are coming to our school to practice the English they have already learnt and to experience life in
our kiwi culture.
This year the group arrive on Sunday, 22 July [the last day of the Term 2 holiday] and leave on Thursday, 2
August [11 nights].
We are looking for home-stay hosts for these 20 boys during this time.

Congratulations to the following students who have been selected to receive a prestigious
Youthmark Award. These awards are funded by the ILT with the purpose of recognising Southland
students who excel in the academic, sporting and cultural arenas. Fifty awards are given out each
year and all Southland secondary schools are allocated a number of awards based on their Year 13
roll numbers. This year Southland Boys’ High School has been allocated 5 awards. These will be
presented at a function at the Ascot Hotel in October.

Music and Drama Department
A keen group of students are meeting on Tuesday and/or Thursday afternoons from 3:30 until 4:30 each week
to work on their Music Theory understanding. Later in the year, there’ll be the opportunity to enter Trinity
College Examinations for those who are interested. The only costs are for the workbooks themselves (as an
indication, the Grade 1 workbook is $12), and any fees for entering the examinations if you choose. It’s not too

Senior Production - Rock of Ages
The crowd has gone home, the smoke has cleared, and the band has packed up their guitar leads and
drumsticks. This year’s Senior Production Rock of Ages proved to be a huge hit with both the cast and audiences
alike. Featuring huge rock hits from the 1980s from bands and artists like Journey, Poison, Bon Jovi, Pat
Benatar, REO Speedwagon and Europe, the show provided wall to wall laughs and some exceptional
performances from the following Southland Boys’ High students.

The Senior Theatre Tech class provided support for the show as stage crew, sound and lighting technicians.
This was an important part of several assessment standards that require practical involvement in actual
performances. Particular thanks must go to our choreographer Mrs Boyce, our stage manager Mrs Petelo and
out wardrobe coordinator Miss McSoriley who volunteered hours and hours of their time to help make the
show the success that it was.
For those in Years 7-10, Junior Production information will become available over the coming weeks, and
preparations are likely to begin during Term 3 for performances in November.

On Friday 15th June, Southland Boys’ High band Oddball performed at the Southland
Finals of the Smokefree RockQuest at CentreStage. The three-piece band performed two songs, Red Sunrise
and Capable, which band members Jared Gilbertson, Sam Grant and Reagan Lang wrote. Oddball got the
crowd pumped up and on their feet with their high energy performance, and gained 3 rd place in the Band section

Momentum - The Big Sing
The Senior Choir, Momentum, performed at the Southland Regional heats of the New Zealand Choral
Federation’s Big Sing Competition on the evening of Tuesday 19th June at First Church. Featuring students from
years 8-13, and a wide range of sporting and cultural interests, Momentum had been working towards this
event since the beginning of the year.
Choirs sing repertoire from three categories – ‘Art’ Music, New Zealand/Pasifika Music, and an own selection.
Momentum sang Set Me As A Seal Upon Your Heart, New Zealand (which was written by past SBHS Music
teacher Kennedy Black), and Tell My Father.
The adjudicator, Mark Dorrell, was very complimentary about Momentum’s efforts, and awarded them a
Commended award. Perhaps more rewarding though has been the feedback from the audience, who clearly
appreciated the strength of our young men, and were moved to tears by Tell My Father.

Unison - Invercargill Schools’ Sing Out
Members of Unison (our rebranding of Year 7 and 8 choir the Boys in Blue) are about to start their preparations
for this year’s Invercargill Schools’ Sing Out, which this year will feature a rock theme, and showcases 2015
Southland Entertainer of the Year Simon Thompson. Rehearsals kick into gear on Tuesday 26 th June, working
towards the final event at the Civic Theatre on Tuesday 18th September. Details about tickets will be available
over the coming months.
New Zealand 2018 Young Pipe Band Drummer of the Year
Our best wishes go to Callum Copeland who is competing in the New Zealand 2018 Young Pipe Band Drummer
of the Year competition in Christchurch on Sunday 24 th June. Callum plays for the City of Invercargill Highland
Pipe Band where he is the lead drummer, and last year was invited to play as a guest with the Hawthorne band
in Melbourne, Australia. Callum has been a member of the Foundation New Zealand Youth Pipe Band since
2016, and is a regular prizewinner at Southland Otago Champioships.

at The Pantry in South City. This is a combined project with students from each school working on the Colour
My World initiative. The mural is on a container that will be beside The Pantry for years to come.

Some excellent painting and drawing from Art students. Harrison Dodd Year 12 is exploring his landscape
theme trialling different paint techniques, while Mishaal Muhammad Year 9 has produced a stunning drawing;
white pencil on black paper.
10Argentian Ambassor Visit
On Tuesday 20 February the school welcomed the Argentina Ambassador His Excellency Mr Fausto Lopez
Crozet and Mr Paul Casson from Venture Southland with a Powhiri. His Excellency Mr Fausto Lopez Crozet
was visiting the region and talking about future development between Argentina and Southland.

Debating, Speechmakers and Shakespeare
March was a hectic month for students on the spoken word. It all began with our Annual SHAKESPEARE DAY
on 8 March and concluded with the Otago University Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival on 28 March.
On Shakespeare Day a colourful group of students and teachers. dressed in Elizabethan garb, walked along
Herbert Street to the school. Elliott Warrender won the cup for the Best Costume. He was dressed as an
imposing Roman Centurion, complete with the correct footwear! The Monologue was won by the duet of Sam
White and Joel Morgan. They gave us a stirring rendition of Henry V’s famous speech.
On 15 March Isaac Myron and Kapila Tohiariki competed in the Rotary Speech Competitions.
Unfortunately, Will Scully became ill and could not compete in the Competition. Kapila was selected for the
next round, but was not chosen to go on. His speech was excellent and received spontaneous and prolonged
applause. Well done, Kapila.
At the same time the students were practising for the Russell McVeigh Debating Championship held in Dunedin
on 17/18 March. Two teams from our school competed. The Senior Team was Isaac Myron, Kapila Tohiariki and
Will Scully. The second team was Jerad Gilbertson, Joel Morgan and Sam White. Both teams performed well
and won several debates. Will Scully was awarded Best Speaker for three of his debates and Jared Gilberston
and Joel Morgan were awarded Best Speaker for one of their debates.
11With 10 days to go, it was a tremendous effort to finalise our entry for the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival. A
delightful cast gave a fine performance of the casket scene from THE MERCHANT OF VENICE: Carl Rodmell,
Tane Froude, Caleb McKenzie and Kaea Edwin with two students from Southland Girls High School, Joey
Sheppard and Serena Lam. Well done, to these young Thespians.

I'm running concentrated on how life would have been back the for
the Chinese gold miners not realizing that I'm starting to slip which
turns into sliding and now sinking, I gain control once again I must
keep going my legs are screaming, my brain is whirling, my lungs
crying... but then I see it, no not the bus but the monster of monsters
though I know I made a vow to never stop tell I get back I have a
feeling of giving up come over me for a split second but then I think
who am I? What would my promise be worth if I did stop? So I dig
deep for that extra energy and pound up the hill I reach the sharp
teeth of a monster my legs are going to give way! Though then I get
over the crest of it's horrible nose, five more meters I take one step
after another jabbing into the monsters forehead then I see over the
top, the bus! I have bet the hill, a big sense of achievement comes
over me I did it!

Defence Force Visit
On Friday 6th April, we had a visit from the New Zealand Defence Force Seasprite helicopter and No. 6
Squadron. Even in the pouring rain it was an impressive sight to see the helicopter landing on our field. Many
students also had the opportunity to talk to the crew and NZDF Recruiter SSGT Jacob Bingley.
13ROBERT McDONALD - Former student at SBHS
Robert is studying Law at Otago University and recently won the cup for the WITNESS EXAMINATION
COMPETITION run by the Law Society. He will now go forward and compete in the New Zealand Final of this
prestigious Competition. In addition, he goes to Adelaide, Australia at the start of July to compete in the
Australian Finals. Our best wishes to Robert for a successful outcome.
Sports Term 1
Sam Taylor
Sam was granted dispensation to race as a senior rider on the 500cc, at his first race meeting he came away
with a win. He was invited to compete in New Zealand Speedway Solo Championships at Moore Park Raceway,
Christchurch (being the youngest ever rider to compete at that level) Sam proudly placed 6th in New Zealand!
His 3rd race meeting was the South Island Solo Title where he placed 5th!

ILT Southland Secondary Schools Softball Champs 2018 Results
Congratulations to our team who won this event in February. Thank you to Jimmy Affleck and Jason Te Huia
for coaching and managing this team. We are grateful for your support.
14Intermediate Section
The Intermediate grade only had two teams entered both from SBHS. In the final SBHS Red won against
SBHS Blue – Thank you to Katie Tull for assisting this team.
Division 2 SISS Softball Tournament
In week 8 of Term One our senior softball team departed for Ashburton to compete in the South Island
Secondary Schools’ Division 2 Softball Championships. The boys had trained hard and were ready to
put in their best effort in at the tournament. The first day the boys had Dunstan High School up first and they
were out to make their mark. Starting slowly in the game the boys woke up and put bat to ball with a strong
hitting performance leading to a 14-0 win. Next up they had Ashburton College, the team started strong and
carried on a dominant performance throughout the game winning 19-0. On the second day the boys were
excited as they were coming up against strong opposition of St Thomas of Canterbury, the game was hard-
fought with scores being locked at 0-0 going into the 6th inning. The boys kept focus and senior boys led the way
scoring important runs to end the game with a 7-0 victory. They then went on to face Timaru Boys’ with another
dominant performance and younger players stepping up to take the team to a 15-0 win. The third day was seen
to be the hardest day of their tournament with possibly having 3 games in unpredictable weather. Up first they
had Rolleston College where the boys were in great form and went to work early getting out to a final score of
15-0. Burnside was the second game of the day where the boys were looking for another strong performance
to set up for what would be their last game of the tournament due to the cancellation of the last day. The boys
led early and came out with a 16-1 win. The third and final game was a playoff as the winners of this game would
progress through to the final and the loser having to play off for a spot the next morning. In challenging
conditions, the team knew they had to do the basics right to secure themselves a spot in the final. Once again,
they showed a strong hitting performance with everyone showing their skills to send the team into a 13-2 win
and the South Island Division 2 champions. The team would like to thank Coach Jim Affleck and Manager Jason
Te Huia for all of their hard work prior to and during the tournament and Miss Tull for all of her hard work behind
the scenes.

15Triathlon - Winton
On Friday 23 February a great team of SBHS students, with the awesome support of Mrs Fisher and Mr Jackson
ventured out to Winton for Southland Secondary School Triathlon. A good effort boys and great results. Jaxon
Taylor placed 1st (U19) in the South Island Tri Champs held in Oamaru 3 March 2018. Well done!

Otago Secondary School Triathlon Champs
Jaxon Taylor raced in the Otago Secondary School Triathlon Champs on the 15th of February. This was
incorporated as part of the Wanaka Challenge this year. He competed in the senior section of the Secondary
Schools’ race which brought together some of the top triathletes in the South Island. Jaxon raced well to come
away with a podium finish, taking out 3rd place. He then went on to compete in the Wanaka Challenge Half Iron
Man two days later as part of a team, with Jaxon completing the 90km bike ride for his team in 2 hours, 34
minutes. The team came home in 10th place. These races were good warm up races leading into the South
Island Secondary School Champs in Oamaru and the National Secondary Schools’ Triathlon Champs which
took place in Nelson during tournament week, as well as the Oceana Championship and U18 Youth Olympic
Games Qualifier in New Plymouth at the end of March.

Congratulations to Ken Singleton on his century for the SBHS 2nd XI vs Metro. Chasing a decent total of 225 set
by Metro, Ken decided to take matters into his own hands and scored 110 runs off 78 balls. This included 18 fours
and 2 sixes. A fantastic match winning innings!

Aaron Hart scored 91 not out against Appleby on 24 February. Not a bad innings from a 13 year old. These types
of performances, along with great team spirit have ensured that SBHS 2 nd XI has finished in top position in the
PGG Wrightson Championship, Division 2.
Shirley Boys’ Cricket Inter-School 2018
The SBHS 1st XI travelled to Christchurch on Saturday 10th February to play against The Willows Cricket Club
and Shirley Boys’ High School. Unfortunately, the match at The Willows was called off early Sunday morning
due to rain. This annual match is a real season highlight and it was a shame that we couldn't get any play. Mike
Dorme from The Willows was just as disappointed as we were with the cancellation. Our focus then turned to
our annual inter-school with Shirley Boys’. Overnight rain meant a delay to the start of the match, with SBHS
captain Sean Withy winning the toss and bowling on an interesting wicket. There were some wet spots on the
wicket and the ball seamed, took off at times and also kept low as the match progressed. It made batting tough
and batsmen had to fight for every run.
Shirley scored 153 in their first innings with our bowling figures:

Batting in our first innings we struggled through to 137 runs with Clark Sutherland 24, Benji Culhane 24, Ken
Singleton 22, Hayden Hart 21 and Sean Withy 19, the best of the batsmen. Lots of starts, but nobody got the big
score we needed to build a decent lead. We went into Shirley Boy’s second innings with real determination and
bowled them out for 109 runs, giving them a lead of 126 runs. Star of the show was Hayden Hart with figures of
6-23 off 21 overs. This was a great spell and will mean that Hayden gets on the cricket honours board at school.
Blair (2), Sean and Jed (1) also took wickets. Chasing the 126 to win was going to be tough on a wicket that was
still playing tricks. At 53 for 6 the chase was not looking great. Shirley bowled extremely well and it took a great
partnership from Benji Culhane (36) and Blake Harper (31) to get as close. Clark, Blair and Jed all did their bit
at the end and it came down to Blair McKenzie hitting a four straight down the ground off the second last ball to
give us the win. After feeling like we were behind the whole match, this was a brilliant effort by a relatively
young side. I believe there is a lot of character
17young side. I believe there is a lot of character in the side and they will only get better with time. Sean Withy
captained the side very well and looks to lead from the front. Well done to Harty for getting on the honours
board and all the boys for their fight and determination and we look forward to our next inter-school with an
experienced Kings side.

Interschool King’s High School Cricket
The Southland Boys 1st XI cricket team travelled to Dunedin to play Kings’ High School 1st XI on the 18th and 19th
February in our annual inter-school match. Leaving school at 7am on the Sunday, we travelled up to a long
first day with playing hours from 10.30am to 7pm. Losing the toss we were sent in on a wicket that was heavily
grassed, but provided reasonable pace and bounce. Blake Harper (57) and captain Sean Withy (59) provided
the backbone of our first inning of 163 runs. Blake was the epitome of patience and his 57 runs came from 190
balls. This sort of determination and hard graft has been a dying art and Blake was brilliant in defence and
showed the younger players how to do it. Sean was more of an attacking threat with his runs coming off 96
balls. In reply Kings were 115/3 at the end of the day and in a good position. Our bowling figures were as follows:

The next morning saw rain and the chances of play looked poor. Both teams were positive though and the game
started in wet underfoot conditions at 12.30pm, with 3 hours play possible. Kings declared overnight to get the
match moving and we went into our 2nd innings trying to set them a target to chase in their 2nd innings. Hayden
Hart with 31 runs was the only batsman to get going in damp conditions and lots of fielders around the bat. With
our 1st innings lead we were able to set Kings a target of 119 in approximately 26 overs for the outright
win. Kings put on 47 runs for their 1st wicket and things were looking difficult for us at this stage. Slowly, but
surely we started taking wickets and the match became tight, eventually coming down to the last over where
Kings needed 11 runs and we needed 2 wickets. We took one of these wickets and they ended up short by 7 runs
for a very exciting draw! The bowling effort in the 2nd innings was:

1st XI Cricket
Recently the SBHS 1st XI cricket team took part in the 1st XI Cup tournament in Dunedin, which involved the
top 6 1st XI's in Otago and Southland playing a 3 day tournament. Our team was seeded 3rd for the
tournament, based on last season’s results. We played Wakatipu High School in our first match of the
tournament. Wakatipu had qualified through a T20 tournament and came in as the 6th qualifier. We had
played them earlier in the season in Queenstown and they were a tough side, who were strengthened by the
inclusion of two Otago age group players. Captain Sean Withy won the toss and sent Wakatipu in on a slightly
damp surface. Sean took three quick wickets to have them in trouble 4 runs for 3 wickets. This slide
continued as Wakatipu ended all out for 52 runs in 28 overs.

This represented an excellent bowling return with all boys performing. The bowling of Alec was exceptional as
he finished the innings by bowling full and straight and he relied on seam movement to get players out. Our
batting has been our achilles heel this season and we needed to start well on a difficult wicket. Ken Singleton
got us off to a great start scoring 20 off 19 balls, but when he fell we began to lose wickets at regular
intervals. Benji Culhane steadied the ship with 14 not out and we reached the total 6 wickets down. So objective
number 1 was achieved, moving into the semi-finals. I did feel for Wakatipu who had played well to qualify for
the Top 6, only to bat poorly in their first match. They are a good side though and defeated Waitaki Boys’ in the
5th vs 6th match and Wakatipu automatically qualify for next season’s Top 6. Our semi-final match saw us play
John McGlashan College who were the 2nd seeds. We had lost to them at last year’s tournament, so it was going
to be a close match. Bowling first we bowled them out for 93 runs, with Alec Mathieson again taking 4
wickets. Our batting looked a little shaky in the chase, but Benji Culhane and young Aaron Hart settled things
down to have us on track. A hat-trick from John McGlashan once again raised the stress levels and it was up
to Hayden Hart and Jed Mockford to see us home in a very tense finish. Hayden used his experience to hit the
right balls to the boundary. Making the final was a great achievement for this young group and win or lose I was
proud of what the boys had achieved throughout the
19season. Playing Kings’ in the final we again bowled well, but Kings batted sensibly to get through to 225. The
rain then fell and we hoped that whatever happened would benefit our side. Unfortunately this wasn't the case
and we had to try to chase down 187 in 32 overs. Captain Sean Withy got a solid 35, but the team struggled to hit
the ball to the big boundaries on the wet outfield and Kings’ deserved the win. Our side has now gone 4th, 3rd
and 2nd in the tournament, so I am sure the boys can go one step further next season. We have had a great
season overall. We won the Queenstown U17 tournament, competed really well in senior club cricket, the 2nd
XI won the Combined Country Div 2, we beat Shirley Boys’ and drew with Kings’ and Otago Boys’ in the inter-
schools and then finished 2nd in the Top 6.
Can I please thank all the parents that have supported and worked with the teams and our coaches over the
season. Special mention for Simon Culhane, who has been brilliant with the 2nd XI all season and Jason
Domigan and Hamish Skelt for working and playing with the 1st XI. Shaun Fitzgibbon has lead the Year 7/8
cricket at school and spent many hours coaching and officiating over the season and this work provides the
boys who progress up through the teams at school. Without all these people we wouldn't have cricket in the
school, so thank you for your commitment to cricket.

Memorable week could get better for champion mountain biker Josh Burnett had great success at the New
Zealand Secondary Schools' Mountain Bike Championships in Rotorua and is now hoping to end it with a win
in Canberra, Australia. Burnett and his father, flew to Wellington for the junior World Series and an
Australian under-19 series in Australia's capital. Josh, 17, won the under-20 boys' section at the
championships, with small margins separating the first four. Josh made the NZ U19 Cross Country which will
compete in Lenzerheide, Switzerland from 5-9 September.
Southland Secondary School Golf Champs 2018
These were held recently at Winton, congratulations to Oliver Year 7 who won his section. Thank you to Dean

South Island Secondary School Touch Competition
On Friday 23 March the Senior Touch team travelled to Christchurch to compete at the South Island Secondary
School Competition. Team members were Ryan Taylor (Captain), Clark Sutherland, Elliot Warrender, Joshua
Davies, Thomas Clark, Harry Taylor, Kruz Carter, Kapila Tohiariki, Thomas Wilcox, Jared Holland, Sam Clark,
Jordy Smith, Josh Murrell, Sam Hartmann, Malakhai Kahukura and Kaea Nikora-Balloch.

At the end of day one the team was placed second in our pool and were playing Otago Boys’ in a semi-final on
Sunday. We lost this game 7-8. The boys put in a big fight, but we run out of time. Top try scorer was Jared
Holland over the 5 games the team played. Over the tournament the boys played well and did the school proud
with their efforts and game etiquette. This meant that the end result was 4 th in the South Island, meaning that
we have qualified to attend the National Tournament in Auckland at the end of the year. A big thank you to Wi-
Richie Tohiariki for coaching the team and to the parents for their support.

Championships in Winton. One team, consisted of Hamish Gray, Thomas Clark, Ryan Taylor and Riley Smith,
proved to be very strong and went through undefeated. The boys qualified for the South Island Tournament to
be held in Christchurch, but, unfortunately will not be attending.

Southland Boys’ High School Rugby Club
My name is Bryce Morgan and I am the new Rugby Administrator for Boys’ High. I have a passion for rugby,
playing it throughout my school life and now for Marist. I look forward to the challenge of taking on this new
role and meeting many new people along the way. The new season has come around quickly, with the 1st XV
starting this term and looking to go to the national top 4 for the third year in a row. The 2 nd XV have had a couple
of pre-season games and are shaping nicely. The rest of the teams officially kicked off Saturday 5th May (duck

Mitchel Fitzsimons was selected to ride in the New Zealand under 17 cycling team to compete in the Canberra
Junior Tour. Mitchel, Navarh Brotherson and Corbin Strong had a very busy school holiday competing at the
Age Group Road Nationals in Masterton. Mitchel came away with a Silver Medal in the Road Race and Navarh
placed 14th in a very strong field of 48. Congratulations to Navarh as he was selected for the New Zealand under
17 cycling team.
Navarh Brotherston
On 19 May our team of 12 travelled west bound for Goulburn, Australia to represent New Zealand in the
Goulburn Junior Tour from the 21st-23rd of May. The tour consisted of four stages of which two were individual
time trials and two were Road Races. Overall the racing was an awesome opportunity and learning curve to be
part of. This was my first time racing overseas as a part of a New Zealand team environment. The racing was
very hard and competitive which left me 9th overall out of 42 riders. This experience has helped me develop as
an athlete, on and off the bike. The event I am working towards currently is the Oceania track cycling games in
October in Adelaide, Australia.

Congratulations to Sam White, Tommy Dobbins & George Naylor who recently finished 5 th in the NZ Team
Open Compound Bow.
Badminton
Congratulations to our two badminton teams who competed at the Southland Secondary Schools’ Badminton
Champs held recently. Our team Jamie Connell, Luke Connell, Vega Mukri and Caleb Young finishing 2nd in the
1st Division and Brad Erskine, Solomon Lewis, Alec Mathieson and Jed Mockford finished 3 rd in the 2nd Division.
Mountain Biking
Southland Mountain Bike Club held an endurance race recently. Two teams competed in this, U15 team
consisted of Jesse Willis finishing 2nd and the other U15 team from SBHS of Sam Cox and Nic Todd finished 3 rd.
Josh Burnett rode in the 4 hour solo race and finished 2 nd overall, and first in the U19. Reuben Heslip also
competed in the U19 8 hour team event and finished 3rd.
Otago/Southland Secondary Schools’ Chess Team Championship 2018
On 16 June, the Southland Boys’ High School Chess Team consisting of Atlas Kerr, Dylan Lee, Jimmy-Lee
Wilson and Shannon Kerr travelled to John McGlashan College in Dunedin to take part in the 14th Annual
Otago/Southland Secondary School Teams Chess Championship.
Last year was their first year of ever competing in this event, when they finished 10th with a score of 10.5
points out of 28.
28This year, with only one of the four team members having played in the event before, they performed
exceptionally well. They witnessed a big improvement and finished 5th out of the 14 teams, with a score of 17.5
points out of the 28 points available (an impressive 67% improvement in their points total, from last year).
SBHS were just half a point behind the 3rd and 4th placed teams, of Logan Park (1) and Kavanagh College, and
finished 2 points behind the 2nd placed team, James Hargest College.
SBHS did extremely well, considering many of the schools taking part have long established chess
programmes and chess tutors at their schools, and were taking part for, in some cases, the 14th straight year.
Otago Boys’ High were the defending champions, having won the event for seven straight titles.
Southland Boys’ High School has a large number of boys who play Chess in the school Library at intervals and
lunchtimes. A number of these boys also joined the Friday night chess, organised by the Invercargill Chess
Club.

Round the Park 2018 – Year 9-13
Good weather meant a good turnout for the Round the Park Competition for 2018. Having all Year 9 student’s
complete the course also meant a larger group in the more social Cross Country section. Well over 250
students’ completed the course and had the opportunity to qualify for the Southland Cross Country Champs, as
well as gaining points for their House.
There were some great individual times; a notable effort was Jaxon Taylor completing the senior course

Steve Jackson – Nominated for Coach of the year
An amateur coach in the best sense of the term, Steve Jackson has dedicated a huge amount of time and energy
into building a successful Southland men's cricket team. His rewards include watching his team remain
unbeaten over two seasons, and having the Hawke Cup safely back home at Queens Park for the first time in
quarter of a century.

SBHS took out the Relays awards at the Swimming Southland Awards prize giving ceremony on Saturday
night ...3 out of 4 trophies! Well done team!
Table Tennis
Carl Rodmell was a member of the Southland U18 boys’ Table Tennis team who competed recently in Timaru
winning the U18 South Island title beating Otago 4 matches to 3. Tyler Hewton was also a member of the U15
boys’ team and they won the U15 team’s event. This meant Southland won two South Island boys’ titles for the
first time. (Carl is front right in the below photo)

Achievements – Please let us know of your son’s achievements and we are happy to put this on our website
and in the newsletters. We rely on parents advising us as the sporting codes do not inform us of our student’s
achievements.
Andrea Mulligan has permission slips, these are sent to classes and also emailed home for all year 7&8
students, boys can also pick them up from the Sports Office. Year 9-13 forms are held in the Sports Office. We
will not accept late entries for any sports as these dates are set by the sporting codes as they need to arrange
draws, team lists etc.

Southland Ski Club
Southland Ski Club is calling upon children and teenagers between ages 10 – 18 years to join us for
our yearly Ski Weeks (ski camp) coming up on the July School Holidays. This is open for all children
/ teenagers in Southland. The Ski Week package includes accommodation at the lodge, meals, lift
passes and two lessons per day. You can choose the 5 day ski camp in Week 1 or a 4 day ski camp in
Week 2 of the July School Holidays. This is a great opportunity to meet other children / teenagers
from all over Southland and Otago. By the end of the ski camp, your children have gained a great deal
of experience either skiing or snowboarding on the ski field.
