Exceptional day

        T
shwane University of Technology (TUT) student Nompumelelo Magagula, celebrated her
birthday on the 30th January 2019 and decided to give back to her own community in
Bronkhorstspruit were she was born and raised.
The Journalism student donated 81 sanitary towels, 23 pairs of shoes and nine school shirts to
Lingitjhudu Secondary Schools and Msuluzane Mayisela Primary School.
“I have always been a person with good interest and concern for others, so I decided to donate
to these schools of which I attended my Primary and Secondary schooling back at home. I
personally know how hard it can be for other families during back to school time,” said Magagula.
Magagula said that is where she grew up, where the values and foundation of her education were
based. A better way of showing others that it is possible to give back with the little that you have.
Magagula started to ask for donations from people who were closer to her and even on social
media, to raise funds since last year from early November. “I had money saved up, but realised
that it will not be enough then that is when I decided to raise funds from the people I know
and what more better way to do on your birthday and put smiles to the less fortunate
   learners,” said Magagula.
It was not the first time giving back but was her first time asking for donations and was
happy with response she got. She wanted to have an impactful mark and reach out as many
          learners she could.
“When you give back to those who are in need the Lord blesses you abundantly. So if
you have little that God has blessed you with always remember to share with other
             people”.
Nompumelelo’s former Principal Johannes Gwangwa at Lingitjhudu Secondary
said that the school was proud to have brought up a child who was not only
an excellent achiever but a person who sympathizers with others and
he believes the future is bright for her.

said that depression is a lot of things and it is different for every person. “In HELPLINES

affects the body as well, often times people who are struggling with depres-
sion feel very tired and they sleep a lot,” said Malan
According to Malan there are different causes for depression among uni-

they have a lot of pressure from home to succeed and end up putting a lot of
pressure on themselves. They don’t always understand that varsity is difficult
than high school and there is a lot of work. Expectations and difficult rela-
tionships with family and friends also causes depression,” explained Malan
She further explained that some students come to uni-
versity already depressed by neglect, past
trauma, physical abuse, Biological causes
e.g. chemical imbalance, sexual abuse and
when they start putting pressure on them-
selves depression becomes worse. Malan
also gave advice to first year students.
“Don’t think you are alone, our students
tend to think I am the only one struggling,
I’m the only one from a difficult background,
and I’m the only one who doesn’t have mon-
ey. That word only makes depression worse so
I would recommend that students start open-
ing up their eyes and ears. Listen, look and then
come for help,” she said.
Malan said that students need to open up and
admit they need help. “Depression is serious, but
