The Greater Story: The Resurrecting Christ
                                       June 13, 2021 - 8:00 AM

AS WE GATHER… This morning we continue our sermon series as we consider another ancient
question: Where is God? In the midst of hardships and difficulties, often the first question on the lips
of both believers and atheists is a simple one, “God if you exist, where are you?” People search for
God, but they are looking everywhere except to Christ. Paul’s letter invites us to live in the power of
the Resurrecting Christ. Though we do not see him now, we know that he is risen and ruling over all
things. His law is holy. His commandments are holy, righteous and good. In him, we have died to the
curse of the law, in his body crucified for us on the tree. In him, we have been raised to a new life in
the Spirit.

OPENING HYMN “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name” [LSB 549; vs. 1-5] Public Domain

Vs.1 All hail the pow’r of Jesus’ name! Vs.3 Ye seed of Israel’s chosen race,
Let angels prostrate fall; Ye ransomed from the fall,
Bring forth the royal diadem Hail Him who saves you by His grace
And crown Him Lord of all. And crown Him Lord of all.
[Bring forth the royal diadem [Hail Him who saves you by His grace
And crown Him Lord of all.] And crown Him Lord of all.]

Vs.2 Crown Him, ye martyrs of our God, Vs.4 Hail Him, ye heirs of David’s line,
Who from His altar call; Whom David Lord did call,
Extol the stem of Jesse’s rod The God incarnate, man divine,
And crown Him Lord of all. And crown Him Lord of all.
[Extol the stem of Jesse’s rod [The God incarnate, man divine,
And crown Him Lord of all.] And crown Him Lord of all.]
Vs.5 Sinners, whose love can ne’er forget
                                       The wormwood and the gall,
Go, spread your trophies at His feet
And crown Him Lord of all.
[Go, spread your trophies at His feet
And crown Him Lord of all.]
INVOCATION
Pastor In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
Pastor: The Psalmist declares, “Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in
        the congregation of the righteous;
People: for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.”
Silence for self-examination.
Pastor: Holy and gracious God,
People: I confess that I have sinned against You, in thought, word, and deed, by what I have
done, and by what I have not done. Some of my sin I know—the thoughts and words
and deeds of which I am ashamed—but some is known only to You. In the name of
Jesus Christ, my Savior, I ask forgiveness and pray You to deliver and restore me by
        Your mercy. Amen.
Pastor: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and given to us His only Son to
suffer and die for our salvation. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His
authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and
of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion
in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
People: Amen.
HYMN OF PRAISE “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name” [LSB 549; vs. 7] Public Domain

Vs.7 Oh, that with yonder sacred throng
We at His feet may fall!
                                We’ll join the everlasting song
And crown Him Lord of all.
                                We’ll join the everlasting song
And crown Him Lord of all.
SALUTATION
Pastor: The Lord be with you.
People: And with thy spirit

PRAYER OF THE DAY
Pastor: Let us pray. Blessed Lord, since You have caused all Holy Scriptures to be written for our
learning, grant that we may so hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them
that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life; through Jesus
Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God,
        now and forever.
People: Amen.
OLD TESTAMENT READING Jeremiah 28:5-9 (All promises of blessings must be received in
accordance with the Word of the Lord.)
Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to Hananiah the prophet in the presence of the priests
and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord, and the prophet Jeremiah
said, “Amen! May the Lord do so; may the Lord make the words that you have prophesied
come true, and bring back to this place from Babylon the vessels of the house of the Lord,
and all the exiles. Yet hear now this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of
all the people. The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war,
famine, and pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms. As for the prophet who
prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes to pass, then it will be known that
the Lord has truly sent the prophet.”
Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
EPISTLE Romans 7:1-13 (Released from the Law)
Or do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law
is binding on a person only as long as he lives? Thus a married woman is bound by law to
her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of
marriage. Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while
her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries
another man she is not an adulteress.
Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you
may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may
bear fruit for God. For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the
law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. But now we are released from the
law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve not under the old written
code but in the new life of the Spirit.
What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the
law, I would not have known sin. I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had
not said, “You shall not covet.” But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment,
produced in me all kinds of covetousness. Apart from the law, sin lies dead. I was once
alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. The
very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. For sin, seizing an
opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. So the law is
holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.
Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, producing death
in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the
commandment might become sinful beyond measure.
Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.

HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 10:32-42 (We are sent to tell the story of Jesus’ work)
Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the tenth chapter.
People: Glory to You, O Lord.
So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father
who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father
        who is in heaven.
[Jesus said:] “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to
         bring peace, but a sword.
For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a
daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person’s enemies will be those of his own
household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and
whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not
take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and
whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
“Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me.
The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward,
and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive
a righteous person’s reward. And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold
water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.”
Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to You, O Christ.

SERMON HYMN “Alleluia, Alleluia! Hearts to Heaven” [LSB 477]
Vs.1 Alleluia, alleluia! Vs.2 Alleluia, Christ is risen!
Hearts to heav’n and voices raise: Death at last has met defeat:
Sing to God a hymn of gladness, See the ancient pow’rs of evil
     Sing to God a hymn of praise;                                                        In confusion and retreat;
He who on the cross a victim Once He died, and once was buried:
For the world’s salvation bled— Now He lives forevermore,
Jesus Christ, the King of Glory, Jesus Christ, the world’s Redeemer,
Now is risen from the dead. Whom we worship and adore.
                                                  Vs.3 Alleluia, alleluia!
Glory be to God on high:
                                                       Alleluia to the Savior
                                                       Who has gained the victory;
                                                       Alleluia to the Spirit,
                                                       Fount of love and sanctity!
                                                       Alleluia, alleluia
                                                       To the triune Majesty!

SERMON The Greater Story: The Resurrecting Christ

NICENE CREED
People: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all things
visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very
God, Begotten, not made, Being of one substance with the Father, By whom all things
were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven And was
incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary And was made man; And was crucified
also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; And the third day He
rose again according to the Scriptures; And ascended into heaven, And sits at the
right hand of the Father; And He shall come again with glory to judge both the living
and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the
Lord and Giver of Life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Who with the
Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, Who spake by the Prophets.
And I believe one holy Christian and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one Baptism
for the remission of sins, And I look for the resurrection of the dead, And the life of
        the world to come. Amen.
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
                                                         + HOLY COMMUNION +
PREFACE 2 Timothy 4:22
Pastor: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Pastor: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them to the Lord.
Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

PROPER PREFACE

Pastor: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks
to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who,
out of love for His fallen creation, humbled Himself by taking on the form of a servant,
becoming obedient unto death, even death upon a cross. Therefore His Name is to be
exalted above all other names; that at the Name of Jesus every knee bow down and every
mouth congress Jesus is Lord. So, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray.
People: Amen.
LORD’S PRAYER
People: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be
done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our
trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the
        glory forever and ever. Amen.

WORDS OF OUR LORD

PAX DOMINI
Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you always.
People: Amen.

He has fulfilled the Law of God for me, His cheering rays beam blessings forth for all,
God’s wrath He has appeased. Sweet comfort, hope, and peace.

His member I shall be. Awakened from the dead,
He bowed His head when on the cross He died Arising glorious evermore to be
With cries of agony. With You, my living head.
     Now death is brought into subjection                                          The chains that hold my body, sever;
For me by Jesus’ resurrection. Then shall my soul rejoice forever.
I am content! I am content!
I am content! I am content!

O Father, where’s the sacrifice? As wayward sheep their shepherd kill
Faith sees, believes So still, His will
God will provide the Lamb of price! On our behalf the Law to fill. (Refrain)

whose death makes me His own! He lives, forgives,
The Lamb is reigning on His throne! He gives me His own righteousness.
Vs.2 The Lamb, the Lamb, (Refrain)
One perfect final offering. Vs.5 He rose, He rose,
The Lamb, the Lamb, My heart with thanks now overflows.
Let earth join heav’n His praise to sing. His song prolong
(Refrain) Till ev’ry heart to Him belong.(Refrain)

DCE INTERN SENDING

Pastor: Our God assures us, as He did His people long ago.
People: “Be strong and of Good courage; be not frightened, neither be dismayed; for the
Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Pastor: People of God in Christ, Abby Currao, who has been aided in her preparation for the
Director of Christian Education by your encouragement, your gifts, and your prayers, has
completed her internship among us. At this time of farewell and Godspeed we look to the
Word of our Lord for encouragement, strength, and guidance. The Psalmist declares:
People: Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Pastor: Sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the rock of our salvation.
People: Glory be to God the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the
beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
Pastor: As Abby prepares for her departure from us, let us pray,
People: Lord, continue to watch over and direct Abby in Your ways by the gift of Your Holy
Spirit for continued ministry within Your church.
Pastor: We pray for ourselves.
People: Lord, open our minds and our hearts to Your presence and work within this church
as we continue to minister within Your kingdom.
Pastor: Abby Currao, following the prescribed procedures of our church body, you have faithfully
served the people of God here at Trinity as a Director of Christian Education Intern. You
came here under the direction of the Almighty God to work with us, that together, we may
grow in grace, knowledge, and the joy of serving our Lord. As you are about to complete
your duties among us, we pray:

O Lord God, merciful and gracious Father, we give thanks for all the blessings you have
bestowed on Abby in her preparation for Christian Education. By your Holy Spirit grant
her grace in her first field of service, readiness to grow in wisdom, knowledge, and skill,
steadfastness in ministering patience, understanding, and great zeal. Support and
strengthen her that by your Word your Church may be build and increased; through your
Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
People: Amen.

                                   Pilgrim through this barren land.
                                   I am weak, but Thou art mighty;
