in the Nelson regions, there's an unmistakable freshness to
the land and the ocean. Local producers and an artisan
culture combine to create confident and uncluttered
cuisine, matched with wonderfully crafted wines.
Upon arrival into Nelson, we take an orientation tour of the
city including Tahunanui, Moncrief Rise for panoramic views
across Tasman Bay, Nelson Cathedral and the heritage

Coastal Pacific Train to Kaikoura. Pass through the grape
growing region of Marlborough then travel along a thin ledge
of land pinned between the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean
and the rugged Kaikoura Ranges. Kaikōura has a rich history
and culture, and its Maori heritage is reflected in the name as
when an early Maori explorer arrived in the area many
hundreds of years ago tired and hungry, he found an
abundance of crayfish (lobster) and named the area Kai –
food Koura – crayfish. On arrival we will check into our
accommodation and then we will enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.

This morning report to the ‘Whaleway Station’ for a Whale Watching Tour on a purpose-built chase
boat. There is a 95% record of sighting sperm whales year-
round. New Zealand’s continental shelf is narrowest off
Kaikoura - the bottom plunges to over 1600 metres within
5 kms of the coast. The upwelling of nutrient rich waters
supports an abundant and diverse fauna of vertebrates,
fish and marine mammals. In addition to whales, you may
also see Dusky Dolphins and the rare Hector Dolphins,
seals, sea lions and a large variety of seabirds including the
smallest of the penguins, the little Blue Penguin.

Back on dry land we re-join the road south following the indentations of a wild coastline affording
constantly changing seascapes as it skirts an exposed rock-strewn shore at the foot of the Seaward
Kaikoura Mountains. There are spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. Short tunnels are a feature of
the journey as engineers strove to find a way through and round the bluffs. At Oaro the road turns
inland and quickly climbs into the Hunderlee Ranges then descends into the rolling farmland of North
Canterbury passing through several small country towns before entering the northern suburbs of
Christchurch.

Tonight, we will dine together in the hotel restaurant.

Accommodation: Heartland Hotel Cotswold – 2 nights
