COMBINED CEMCC & AJS-MATCHLESS JAMPOT OBERON RALLY 1-3 NOVEMBER 2019Two stroke Tuesday, 12 November. A smoke of two strokes (and a sensibility of those overcomplicated four stroke devices)
assembled at the old fortifications at the Wollongong Lighthouse to then travel to Port Kembla beach cafe via – appropriately -
the scenic route alongside the BlueScope Steel coke ovens.

Several members attended the
Classic Riders Club of Goulburn
annual classic ride on Sat 26
and Sun 27 October and battled
a fierce headwind on Saturday
to enjoy a stupendous morning
tea put on by the folks at the
Bungendore Public school, and
another opportunity to enjoy
baked goodies at Tirrannaville
Public School on the Sunday
morning. So do we enjoy these
rides for the riding, the bikes and
people or the simple enjoyment
of home cooked old fashioned
baking... The bike theme of the
weekend ride for this year was
superbikes, and several
Kawasaki Z900’s and CB 750’s
were on the rides – including
these two very tasty CB 750’s
waiting at Bungendore for their
somewhat heavier owners to
finish morning tea.

-3-NOISES FROM THE BIG END
Presidents Report for 2019.
The past year has seen all of the committees from Sydney; Wollongong and Orange perform a wonderful job in making the
CEMCC such an active and vibrant club and the envy of other clubs.
This year has seen a lot of change. In particular, this was the first year the Oberon rally was held as a combined effort between the
AJSMOC and the CEMCC and I must confess, ended up being a greater success than ever I had imagined.
We were able to publish an updated Services listings for local and overseas suppliers along with an updated Code of conduct.
Also, our club logo has been redrawn from an original design and will be available in an electronic format for all committees to use.
The Club website and facebook sites have proven very popular throughout the year and continue to be important communication
tools. In particular the facebook site reaches approx 600 posts each week. Well done and keep the posts coming in.
The HVS log book scheme is now permanent and communication with the RMS has improved with email bulletins now available
with registration on their website. To help with the registration process we developed an easy to follow, graphic flow chart. The
club has registered with the Council of Motor Clubs for inclusion in the RMS Classic Vehicle Scheme and the Committee will be
working on preparing guidelines for this in the new year.
I commend the efforts made by all our committee workers and in particular give praise to our editors for making the Clatter a high
quality publication. We have a growing number of members choosing to receive the Clatter by email, which is helping to reduce
costs.
Not forgetting the tireless effort put in by or members in organising / The Facebook and club web sites / The Engadine show day /
The Orange rally / The Oberon rally / The Illawarra rally / The Debenham rally / The TC ride / The Dungog ride /The weekend rides
and all the weekly; monthly and other activities throughout the year. Well done one and all.
I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas time with family and friends (remembering it’s not all chocolates and presents). I will look
forward to catching up with you in the New Year.
Yours in Motorcycling……David de Lapp

-4-THE VICE REPORT
I am starting to arrange some guest speakers for our 2020 Sydney meetings. My political journalist contact is still keen to come and
talk about life in “the Canberra bubble”. Hopefully, that will happen early in the New Year when parliament is not sitting. I recently
met a chap who knows a lot about airports (most built for military use in WW2, and now nearly all gone) in western Sydney. He is
keen to come and talk to us. But the plea goes out again. If you know someone who is knowledgeable on an interesting subject
(not necessarily motorcycle related) please get in touch.
On a recent brief trip to Brisbane, we spent a few days with old friends in Casino, in northern NSW. Driving along the Summerland
Way, getting closer to Casino, the evidence of the recent terrible bushfires in the region was there for all to see. The following day,
we all drove around Rappville and the surrounding area. Rappville is about 30km south of Casino. These friends of ours used to
live in Rappville, and we often would stay with them there. Their old house had been destroyed, as were quite a number of other
houses in Rappville. In contrast, the fires spared nearby houses, as if to say “I'll do that one, but, well, not that one!” The
randomness of it all is quite inexplicable. Travelling around the district, we stopped to talk to a couple known to our friends, who
had lost their house and all its contents. It was the third time a house on this property had been lost to fire.
Realising how dear the subject of Panthers is to Clatter readers, I had a bit of unexpected good luck the other day. I have virtually
finished restoring a 1932 500cc Panther, which I originally acquired as the ultimate basket case. A whole lot of parts found in swap
meets far and wide, not one component had ever been on the same bike as any other component. What was not missing was worn
out or damaged. The Sturmey Archer gearbox didn't have a kick start pedal, but I found one in Orange. It had to be heated and
bent a number of times to clear the exhaust pipe. It was them chromed and looked a million dollars. A month or so back, trying to
start the bike, the pedal snapped. It obviously had developed a crack, and succumbed. The welding repair was not really
successful, so I started to look for another pedal. I very quickly realised that I was going to have to be extremely lucky to find one. I
friend started to make me one out of a piece of stainless. And then, guess what? Looking through my gearbox bits and pieces, I
found a Sturmey Archer kick start pedal. Eureka! I didn't even know that I had it, or remember when and where and why I got it. It
must have been sitting in my garage for decades, just waiting for someone to tell it just how wanted it is. Time to buy a lottery
ticket.
Yours in Vice (Presidency), David Lewis.
P.S. Did you know that both the club's President and Vice President share both the same Christian name and birthday. What are
the chances of that?
P.P.S. The above mentioned ks pedal is probably a BSA one, rather than Sturmey Archer. Still, it fits fine, and does the job.

-5-CLASSIC CLATTER – NOVEMBER
As a newly minted member, and with Bruce taking on the role of Secretary of the Illawarra Branch, I'm stepping more into the
actual Editor role, so here is my first editorial spiel. Bruce does assure me that he will continue as Editor-At-Large with, no doubt,
many “helpful” suggestions and much pontificating – so nothing changes there ...
Discussion with Bruce about the Classic Riders Club of Goulburn weekend ride, the latest editorial in the Australian Motorcycle
News (AMCN), as well as the Jampot Rally report, got me thinking about the benefits that visiting motorcyclists can bring to an
area. No doubt the Oberon and the surrounding environs received an economic boost during the rally, as would have the small
communities that were visited during the recent Ted Conran ride. As Sam McLachlan (AMCN Editor) noted motorcyclists can't
always take everything they need, so they "turn up, book a room, eat the local grub, drink the local beer, use the local fuel, visit a
local attraction and essentially spend up big". As this drought continues every extra cup of coffee, middy of beer or schnitzel
purchased will help that community in some small way. Just as the Silo Art Trail has breathed life into some rural communities, so
too can rallies, rides or just day trips. It's great to think that the
CEMCC continues to do this on a regular basis whether it's the
Orange, Debenham or Oberon Rally, or a Ron Foye day ride
down the south coast.
I was also particularly intrigued to read that the Jampot Rally
awards were made by the Grenfell's Men Shed. Grenfell is
one of those small country towns that benefits from such visits
and is especially familiar to me, as I was born there and, until
my mother's recent passing earlier this year at 97, a regular
visitor to Grenfell. So whether it's Grenfell or Gulargambone,
Tooleybuc or Temora, Grong Grong or Matong, get on your
bike, enjoy the roads and see what's out there but don't forget
to make a stop, buy a coffee, or stay the night, if and where
you can, and help out those communities who often do it
tough, even when not in drought.
Bruce and I wish you all a safe and happy festive season, and Grenfell Commodities Silos, painted by Heesco 2019.
best wishes for 2020.

-6-Occasional Comments
The latest Maccas television advertisement where the various McDonalds restaurants are seen as landmarks for navigation,
neutral ground meeting places and convenient for emergency toilet stops is absolutely spot on. It shows some courage from the
company to acknowledge and praise the unusual uses that we, the general public have for this iconic food chain.
I must admit to using a Maccas carpark as meeting point for our Northern rides, it does give you an easily found location (thanks to
the prominent golden arches) with a convenient carpark, a place to sit and wait for other riders, clean toilet and washroom facilities
if needed and a reasonable cup of coffee before a ride. More power to Maccas for running with it, although I did notice the Rouse
hill store have signs in the carpark stating parking is for customers only. It must become frustrating for the owners when the local
Ulysses club uses the store as a meeting point where they get dozens showing up for a ride and not all buying a coffee or
breakfast.
As mentioned last month my old rigid Triumph has been in the shed, a knock caused me to give the motor a teardown, on the way I
found a valve guide insert had dropped down and the valve had turned the insert into a metal tulip. But this was not the cause of
the knock and was not actually causing any issues, it appears to have been worn main bearings. I was about to reinstall the
magneto and tried to turn it when I found it to be stuck solid, this could be freed up but only momentarily as the shellac had started
to degrade and was running into the body and causing the lock up. I thought I would try cleaning it up and coating the coil with
araldite to seal in the shellac and see where that takes us. Its back together now and running, here's hoping all the problems have
been resolved for some time to come.
Also in the shed is a recently acquired Honda VFR400R, something modern for me being a 1987 model, these are surely one of
the sweetest bikes from the 1980's. The carbies are finicky and I am still working through the carburation, but it's initial problem
with not wanting to rev out was diagnosed when I removed the third float bowl to have the main jet drop out onto the work bench,
now the sluggish mid range is in my sights to resolve.
Saturday 12th October saw several club members on a Velocette and Vincent run to St Albans, this is an annual memorial ride in
memory of Peter Underwood and was well attended despite the threat of rain which eventuated on the way home.
The next day was a club run to Kurrajong village, we had 4 starters for a lovely dry ride up through the hills crossing the river at
Windsor, through Freemans Reach, across through Tennyson, East Kurrajong rd, Comleroy Rd and on to Kurrajong Village for
morning tea. While there we had several riders from the V&H club drop in on their ride and had a good chat with several members
before heading back down through Grose Vale and North Richmond.
The combined Jampot and CEMCC was a success with around 60 bikes and 100 participants, I was bunked in with Ray Gosling
and Peter Wolfenden in the caravan park, we had a Velocette an Ariel and a Sunbeam all giving good service over the weekend.
Ray picked up a well deserved trophy for his delightful 1935 350 Sunbeam which didn't miss a beat all weekend, Peter
Wolfenden's Ariel Red Hunter ran well after a clutch rebuild on the way there and showed a lot of the AMC bikes how to climb hills.
My Velo managed to throw out more oil than normal, but the leak was finally fixed before Peter and I rode home. Kim Fleming had
his BSA Rocket Goldstar, as immaculate as always and he was ever keen to give it a head of steam along some of the great roads
around Oberon he was difficult to keep in sight sometimes as I was worried by where the oil that was finding its way onto my right
boot may be going.

-7-The Story of Two Norvins
(this article is reprinted after a number of member requests)
A brief technical history of the tuning and development of two of Australia’s famous road racing Vincent powered
motorcycles. Namely, “The Corish Vincent” and “The Debenham Vincent”. Both bikes shared many features as would
be expected when they were tuned and ridden by the same rider albeit in different time zones.
Technical details supplied by Eric Debenham. Article and illustrations by Mark Mansell.
Part 2 (see November edition for Part 1, pp.12-14)
A Norton Dominator frame was located and the wheels were quickly changed over to a 7R AJS conical hub rear with
twin leading shoes and a Vincent front hub with twin discs mounted to it. Renault callipers were actuated by a Honda
750 master cylinder and lever. Aluminium rims were Borrani, being 18”back and 19”front. Tyres were Dunlop triangles,
4.00 back and 3.25 front, fastened to the rims with self-tappers. The discs were machined by Harry Corish from the
firebox doors of a C-38 steam locomotive. ( A better fully annealed heat resistant steel would be hard to find). Using
proprietary discs before these resulted in overheating of the discs, the bike often coming in after a race with dark blueing
appearing on the unworn edges. The “firebox doors” never showed any signs of overheating.
A Manx gearbox was found and a Commando clutch fitted with Ferrodo friction plates. Triplex chain primary drive from
the standard Vincent crankshaft sprocket with its cush drive were used. Another Vincent engine was found. Engine
number F10AB/1/7762, and was literally shoe horned into the Dominator frame. Again, the gearbox had been sawn off
by a previous owner. This engine was mounted 3”lower in the frame than the previous bike, and fitted with coil ignition.
These were two of the main things that Eric had always wanted on the Corish bike. The lower engine to improve
handling, the battery ignition to make starting easier and therefore obtain a quicker get-away. Don’t forget these were
the days of push starts and these bikes were heavy by today’s standards. In fact Eric’s bike came in at 368.5 Lbs with
oil and battery (no fuel) when weighed at the QANTAS terminal before being flown to Christchurch, New Zealand in
December 1982, where it recorded the fastest outright lap time (including the cars).
The coil ignition used a Vincent D series distributer. The timing on each cylinder could never be exactly the same with
this system. The closest ever being No.1 at 37 and no.2 at 34 degrees advance, so a Dolphin ignition system with
individually adjustable sets of points was fitted. At first this system fed single plugs per cylinder at 36 degrees advance.
After a couple of meetings, the engine was pulled apart and revealed that the piston crowns opposite the spark plugs
were still polished. Dual plugs were fitted and after a bit of trial and error, the optimum advance was 30 degrees. At
about this time it was also discovered that the recommended factory piston ring end gap was insufficient. The ends of all
the rings were highly polished due to the rings butting up. They were all increased to 0.028”.
Gearing for Bathurst was tried at 3.23 :1 but was too high. 3.42 :1 proved much better, the actual numbers of teeth
being;
E36 C57 CS25 RW54 Top = 3.42 :1
Gearing for Oran Park was;
E36 C57 CS19 RW55 Top = 4.58 :1
For other tracks. (Commando internals in Manx box).
Gearing Lakeside Amaroo Winton Wigram

The Dominator frame was really being pushed to its limit of endurance by the big engine under racing conditions. The
static clearance between the swinging arm pivot webbing and the chain was 5/16”. After a Bathurst meeting it was
-8-noticed that the chain had been rubbing. Obviously under heavy acceleration the frame was flexing. The frame had
stiffeners welded in to prevent this. The swinging arm itself was also stiffened as per Fig 4. This frame flexure was
pointed out to Phil Irving and he explained that was the reason the original Vincent gearbox was a cross-over design.
Under brakes the front forks would really get a hammering. After another Bathurst meeting Eric was wheeling the bike
from the trailer onto its work bench (as small step of about 4”) and the bottom yoke broke away. This was an aftermarket
style racing accessory promoted by a well-known racer from the U.K.. Eric was not very “Tickled” about it. A steel
Norton one was quickly found and fitted.
In its final race trim, the Debenham Vincent engine specifications were as follows;
Bore; 84.7mm
Stroke; 90mm
Swept Volume; 1,015cc
Compression Ratio; 12.6 : 1 chamber vol. 43.5cc (Willis pistons)
Camshafts; Specially ground (Lightning Timing) See notes below.
Carburation; 2 x 1.375” G.P. Amal (x2)
Length of inlet tract; 11”from bell mouth to valve
Fuel; Straight Methanol
Spark Plugs; Lodge RL49, RL51, RL 53 (x4)
Ignition; As explained above
Exhaust Pipes; 2” Inside diameter parallel x 44” long
Oil; BP Coarse 50 C
Notes; After every race meeting Eric would check the ignition timing and valve timing. Though Lightning timings were
adopted the actual valve lifts were inlet 0.406”exhaust 0.344”. On both cylinders the inlet valve was wide open from 70
degrees ATDC to 70 degrees BBDC. (40 degrees dwell at full lift). Two front cylinder heads were used with the inlet
ports opened out to 1.375”straight through with 2”valves. Crankshaft assembled by Sid Willis.
Typical readings taken on 12-3-1973 after a meeting were;
No.1 cylinder IO 57 EXO 71
IC 69 EXC 51
No.2 cylinder IO 54 EXO 70
-9-IC 69 EXC 50
For comparison Lightning timings were;
IO 55 EXO 72
IC 68 EXC 50
This bike served Eric very well. It competed in open meetings and hill climbs very successfully and later it produced
many stirring moments for both spectators and its rider in vintage racing.

- 10 -OBERON Rally Report
This year the AJS and Matchless Owners Club of Australia inc. held their annual Down Under Jampot Rally in a small town in NSW
called Oberon. This year the rally also included the Classic and Enthusiasts Motor Cycle Club of NSW inc. In attendance to our
rally was around 70 riders plus partners and family with the rally hub and accommodation being in the heart of Oberon, the Jenolan
Caravan Park.
Friday 1st November 2019 - By lunchtime most of the entrants and their families were well settled in and preparing for a short 6 km
ride to Oberon Dam just to get some blood circulation because of course no maintenance or machine checks are required on our
AJS or Matchless. Riders were then back at the caravan park awaiting the 6.00 pm opening BBQ sausage sizzle and welcoming
get together.
Saturday 2nd November 2019 - 8.00 am riders gathered at the hub prepared for a beautiful scenic 150 km ride. David deLapp gave
a short rider briefing and away we all went. By 9.30 am we arrived at O’Connell where we had morning tea provided and catered
by the O’Connell School P&C. At this point there were some minor bike issues, one being a father and son riding team. By my
observation poor bike maintenance by the father Gary Bastian, a blown head gasket, could happen to anyone. After loading
ourselves up with food and coffee we then proceeded through a small town called Rockley. By now 3 coffees and heaps of cakes
were catching up with me, breaking into a cold sweat I was begging for our next stop, a town called Burraga where of course we
stopped to eat again. Lunch was beautiful, held in the Sports and Recreation Club was also catered.
Bikes were lined up in the car park with judging forms issued to all entrants. When all was done and dusted we then proceeded
with our ride through Black Springs and onto Oberon.
At 6.30 pm a dinner and presentation was catered for at the Oberon RSL with a courtesy bus if required. A beautiful 3 course meal
with some members by now looking a little like Harley heifers.
The awards for the rally were called out by David deLapp and David
Motociclo
Baker. The 1920’s category and AJ Stevens trophy not included due
to no bikes being eligible.

our Jampot Rally with a Jampot shocker being the focus and centre
piece of the trophies. THANK YOU.
- 11 -Also, a special thanks to the Mayor of Oberon, Kathy Sajowitz, who joined us for the presentation, giving us a short speech in
regards to Oberon township. I would personally like to thank her for keeping the local law enforcement at bay during our stay.
Sunday 3rd November 2019 - Sunday morning started with an 8.00 am AGM for those who wanted to attend. 16 members showed
with a few slight changes to the committee. Discussions were made in regards to upcoming events. Next year, 2020, our 40th
anniversary, Goulburn NSW, 2021, that little island at the bottom of Australia, Tasmania, 2022, South Australia possibly Victor
Harbour, all very promising at this point. All committee members agreed with a current membership of approximately 170 members
we are very comfortable and don’t require anymore. Joking, all are welcome and families are encouraged to join in the fun, it’s not
all about the bikes.
This morning’s ride, 82 km of beautiful countryside, at late start at 10.30 am, time for a sleep in for some. For those who preferred
to extend their ride an additional 40/50 km was offered, I am really sorry I didn’t see the marshall and you didn’t all have to follow
me.
12.30 pm a BBQ lunch was provided at the Oberon Railway Museum as well as a presentation for the largest pine cone. A $50.00
Bunnings voucher prize to the winner, the Tassie boys collected this and I have never seen a more dilapidated pine, must have
been run over or genetically enhanced, 15 minutes in the microwave still didn’t have me a winner, it was huge. For those that
chose to a visit to the Tractor Orphanage was also available.
This concluded our 2019 DOWNUNDER JAMPOT RALLY, in summary a wonderful event, magic people from all over our beautiful
country. Many thanks to our many sponsors, caterers, collectors, committee members, the list goes on. Most of all thank you to our
members, stay safe and well and we will be seeing you for our 40th ANNIVERSARY, GOULBURN NSW, DOWNUNDER JAMPOT
RALLY 2020.
Take care, Regards ‘J’ JASON MALONEY - but most of all ‘REMAIN CALM’.

Reports
Treasurer’s Report : Tabled.
Historian: Steve Ansell reported that a 1952 ex-police bike was sold on behalf of a family.
Welfare: Ray Marshall is in hospital. Peter Jones unable to ride any more. Kevin Coleman passed away.
Technical: Alan related a story of a faked photograph purporting to show Alan’s Black Vincent which was an
excellent quality model in foreground appearing to be an actual bike. This was to put one over Kevin
Coleman, who came to see the “new” bike of Alan’s.
A Triumph had an oil problem (not the usual lack of…) which turned out to be poor quality piston rings.
Good ones from Melbourne solved the issue.
Regalia: Bill and Marie have sloppy joes, name tags, shirts, a sense of humour and belt buckles. Apparel can
also be ordered direct from Ryan Gosling. This set-up will be reviewed when our supplies are
exhausted, well, very tired anyway.
Events: **For the latest correct/updated information on rides, look up the club website.**
