In honor of two friends who have recently passed, Peter Gunn and Brian Patterson
Sadly, we recently learned that one of Bellingham’s leading downtown citizens, Peter Gunn, has died. Peter

Brian Patterson had an outsized effect on Pickford Film Center’s nascent years and on my life, personally.
Not only did Brian offer a room in his home to me as I transitioned out-of-state to Bellingham in the early
days of The Pickford Cinema, his work as a tireless board-member and eventual board-president was

sweet disposition, an always enthusiastic outlook on the future of what we used to call the “Whatcom Film
Association” and the zeal of a proselytizer when it came to films he loved. Brian eventually put his love of
film to the test, going to film school, which took him away from Bellingham but toward a fulfilling new life. He
passed his instructor-baton at Whatcom Community College to me—introducing me to Bob Winters and what
would be a very fulfilling half decade teaching film history courses. Students and fellow educators would
recall Brian’s enthusiasms long after he left. My heart goes out to his family and friends and here is one big
