Welcome Letter

On behalf of the Iowa Association for the Education of Young Children
(Iowa AEYC) and our partners, welcome to the 2021 Virtual Early
Learning Fall Institute. We hope you make the most of your virtual
Institute experience; stay engaged, ask questions, and that you learn
some things that you are able to implement in your practice.

We are grateful for all of our ongoing partnerships and thank our
Corporate Sponsors and Partners for their generous contributions to
the Institute. We appreciate the support to continue providing quality
professional development to the early care and education workforce
while also keeping the Institute affordable.

Many thanks to the Iowa AEYC staff who made this year’s Institute
possible. The Institute would not be a success without the efforts and
contributions of the entire staff, the Iowa AEYC Board members, our
partners and their boards, volunteers, and our presenters. In addition,
a huge thank you to our Institute planning co-chairs; Bethany Davis and
Miranda Niemi who donated their time and experience to make the
   Institute a success.

We are delighted to have Manny Scott with us Friday and Lisa Murphy
Saturday as our keynote speakers. We welcome you to the 2021 Virtual
Early Learning Fall Institute, we sincerely hope that you enjoy your

Friday Keynote Speaker

                                Manny Scott

An original Freedom Writer whose story is told in part in
the 2007 hit movie, Freedom Writers, Manny Scott has
energized almost two million leaders, educators,
volunteers, and students worldwide with his authentic,
inspiring messages of hope. On the road up to 300 days per
year for the last two decades, Manny Scott is on a mission.

By age 16, Manny’s story was almost over: His father was incarcerated, he
missed 60-90 days of school annually from 4th to 9th grade, he dropped out of
school at age 14, he lived in 26 places by age 16, and his best friend was brutally
murdered. Sensing that the end of his life was near, Manny sat down on a park
bench, and considered how he would make others feel the depth of despair and
anger roiling in his soul. He says, “When I look back, I now see that I was heading
down a path that would have destroyed me.”

Then, several individuals entered his life and helped him turn the page. He
returned to school and ended up in the back of Erin Gruwell’s English class—a
group now known worldwide as the Freedom Writers, portrayed in the 2007 hit
MTV movie. She and several others helped Manny go from Fs and Ds to As and
Bs. They helped him become the first person in his family to graduate from high
school and go to college. Through very hard work, and with the help of others,
Manny is now living the life of his dreams.

In 2007, he founded Ink International, Inc, an education consulting firm that has
empowered nearly two million people to improve the quality of not only their
own lives, but also the lives of those around them. He has helped hundreds of
organizations raise student achievement and leader effectiveness in 49 states and
five continents; and, he has helped prevent thousands of dropouts and suicides.

He is now happily married, a doting father of three, a pilot, a Ph.D. student, and
one of the nation’s most sought-after speakers.

2021 Commitment to Young Children - Senator Joni Ernst

Senator Joni Ernst has worked hard for child care in
Washington, DC and in Iowa. The Senator spent time
discussing issues with child care in roundtable discussions,
touring child care centers, and speaking with parents,
providers, and businesses. The Senator made child care an
integral part of her campaign and carried out the work as she
championed the need to address the lack of affordable child care. Senator Ernst
continues to advocate for Iowa’s child care system and works to address the child
care crisis in Iowa and the nation.

children. Kate also communicates with parents so they can
support the classroom efforts at home, making for greater
continuity between home and classroom. Kate’s support
of children and families is not limited to her workplace. Kate went above and
beyond during the pandemic and used her sewing skills to sew over 2,000 face

tirelessly alongside child care providers helping wherever
they could over the past year. Staff supported providers to
understand and fill out applications so they could benefit
from the stipends. They helped programs decipher the
recommendations and requirements from the Department
of Human Service and Iowa Department Public Health. They delivered supplies
and maintained consultation in any way that they could. Staff listened to
frustrations and worked on solutions. They were empathetic and
understanding, helping everyone to do their best for children and families. Many
programs closed during the pandemic, yet many stayed open due to the creative
and persistent efforts of Iowa Child Care Resource & Referral.
